Staying Safe

Hope you’re all staying as safe as you can. Except for my weekly trek to the grocery store, I've been staying at home. Work and life continue for me, as I’m lucky enough to work from home. As an introvert, I spent a lot of time at home before the pandemic, so it’s not as much as a disruption in my life as it is for many.

Like everyone, I miss being able to go out and do what I want, but this is a necessary step right now. I’ve been isolating at home and social distancing when I need to be out.

I admit, I’ve been delving a little too deeply into the sweets/chocolate. I love 95% dark Lindt chocolate. Yum. And I’ve binged on a couple of Netflix series.

But for me, it always comes back to reading. It’s what I do when the stress gets to be too much. I’ve reread old favorites and bought some new. A friend gave me a gift card for books. It’s like they know me.

If you’re like me and looking for a new book, you might consider checking out Fury Unleashed, the first book in my new paranormal series—Forgotten Brotherhood.

TEASER:

He was once again dressed all in black—jeans that clung to his thighs, a T-shirt so tight it might as well have been painted on, and the same leather jacket he’d worn last night. Sexy and dangerous were the best way to describe him.

She, on the other hand, was clean but grungy. She'd scrubbed the blood from her pants and jacket, but her top had been a write-off. She wore one of Maccus’s shirts, which swallowed her smaller frame and hung below her jacket.

Clothes were secondary to her. She never left home without her edged weapons and gun.

A girl had to have her priorities straight.

Fury Unleashed
Forgotten Brotherhood, Book One

Maccus Fury, a fallen angel, is trying hard to keep his sanity. Seems being an assassin might be catching up with him. Now, Heaven, or Hell, has sent a beautiful assassin to kill him. Lovely. She’s pretending to seduce him, and he’s okay with that. She’s smart and snarky—but she has no idea what she’s walked into. And he’s more than peeved that they only sent one person. They’re going to need an army if they want him dead.

Morrigan Quill is one of Hell’s bounty hunters. She sold her soul to keep her sister safe, and now she’s working off her contract by catching bad guys and dragging them back to hell. When Lucifer makes her a new offer––that’s definitely too good to be true—she can’t say no. All she has to do is kill a powerful and crazy-hot fallen angel, who will totally kick her ass in battle.

Good thing he won’t see what’s coming next.

N.J. Walters is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.

Steamy #Romance Reads & #Haven Excerpt

Origins by Celia Breslin book cover

Hi Everyone!

Hope you all had a fabulous April. Mine was, sadly, dominated by a wicked, tenacious chest cold. Three weeks, ack!

APRIL ROMANCE READS

While I was laid up with the Virus From Hell, I managed to read a megaton of romance and also edit the third novel for my Tranquilli Bloodline vampire lovebirds, Carina and Alexander (Origins).

Here are a few of my favorite books from this month of coughing, sniffling, wheezing, and sneezing...

Destiny by Celia Breslin book cover

  • Lotus Petals (#1, Blood and Fire series), by Brantwijn Serrah
  •
  • The Risk (#1, (Xtreme Heroes series), by Skye Jordan
  •
  • Hades, Base Instincts, and Z (3 books in the Demonica series), by Larissa Ione

ROMANCE SNIPPET

Here's a romantic moment from HAVEN featuring Carina, my feisty San Francisco club owner, and her love-interest, undead musician Alexander...

Haven by Celia Breslin book cover ... Outside, the misty air cooled my lungs, the marble bench froze my ass, and the concrete under my bare feet chilled them bone deep. All cleared my head and eased the vertigo. “What time is it?”

Alexander draped his black leather coat over my shoulders. “Around four.”

He helped me snake my arms into the coat’s too-long-for-me sleeves, his hands pale like moonlight against the inky darkness of his coat. Such large, competent hands, the fingers long and strong. Piano player fingers. A silver band graced his left index, an onyx triquetra adorning the middle. He fished my hand from the sleeve. When our palms touched, power pulsed, warm and comforting.

My eyes strayed to the bracelets on his wrist. One thin strap of black leather and a chunky, metal bracelet of I-shaped links. I traced the metal with my free hand. “Silver?”

“Never.” He pointed at the rings. “White gold.” And the bracelet. “Titanium.”

“Oh.” My fingers continued their dance over his accessories. Love touching him.

Wind gusted around the clinic, whipping locks of hair across my face. He brushed them away, tucking some behind my ear. I pressed my cheek against his palm and closed my eyes to savor the moment. “Feeling better?”

I blinked and gave him a wry grin. “A lot better since you interrupted my undead uncles getting me drunk on brandy.”

His lips quirked, fangs flashing.

My insides quivered. “Yeah, much better.” My fingertips stroked his handsome face.

His skin showed no signs of the wounds he’d received during the earlier fight. Impressive. He leaned into my touch. My eyes zeroed in on his oh-so kissable lips. He moved closer, closer still, pausing a hair’s breadth away. My pulse skyrocketed. My stomach performed endless somersaults while bits lower clenched in anticipation. Do it. Do it now.

Alexander let out a breath and kissed me. ...

Want to read more? Here's another excerpt: Alexander and Carina's First Meet -->

Have a great week, Dear Readers, and see you back here on May 30th!

xo,
Celia

The Holidays When You Aren't Quite Into It

It's that time of year again. The time of peace, happiness, Christmas carols, and egg nog. However, it's also that time of year for crowded stores, endless sweets, and empty bank accounts.

Normally I'm not a scrooge. In fact I'm quite the opposite. I usually love Christmas! Everything about Christmas would make me happy. It's always been my favorite time of year. Unfortunately this year I'm just not feeling it.

My girls are now teenagers so the beautiful fantasy of Santa Clause has now disappeared which means a lot of the "magic" of this time of year has dissipated as well. I miss the lists for Santa, the kids writing letters to him, and yes I even miss that damn Elf on a Shelf. It makes my heart sad to see all the pictures of everyone's Elf and ours is tucked away somewhere. Poor Nicky.

As many mothers of teenagers know that the gift requests have also gone from easy toy lists with tons of items to requests of game systems that cost a whopping $300 and that's before the game to actually play! And when you have three teenagers all requesting big ticket items it definitely hurts the wallet. I know they don't have to have everything they ask for but I've always been one to go big or go home on Christmas so that's what we try to do but now instead of seeing tons of gifts under the tree there's only 4 or 5 per teen since everything they want is so pricey. Just takes away the illusion a bit for me.

My husband and I did manage to go take a 'just us' trip up to Opryland Hotel for an evening. It was beautiful BUT also crowded with most people not knowing where they were trying to walk to but all in all it was a nice getaway.

I'm trying to get more in the mood for Christmas as it gets closer but at the same time each day there's something new that I forgot or need to make along with keeping up the house and keeping the teenagers alive. Combine all of that with the day job and I'm just drained of all holiday spirit. Although I'm trying to hide that from my kids.

However, I did manage to add a couple new books to my TBR list. Like I need anymore. But I'm really looking forward to these. Links below....

The Woman in the Window  by A. Finn -- Really looking forward to some down time so I can actually read this. It doesn't release until January 2nd but it's available for pre-order.

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen -- Releasing on January 9th but is available for pre-order.

The English Wife by Lauren Willig -- I haven't read a historical story in quite some time but this one I'm going to have to. It seems to interesting to pass up.  -- Releasing on January 9th but is available for pre-order.

I know I'm sure I'm driving you nuts since the books mentioned above are all pre-orders so here ya go...

The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty -- I can't pass up a book with that title. Just can't. Plus, love her! Available now!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!! Send some cheer and joy my way while you're at it. ;-)

Hugs,
Amber

Never write while sleep deprived

**Yawns** forgive me if I ramble a bit today. I’m going on day three of having very little sleep. No, I have not been up all night writing. That would be nice.  I’ve had a few rough days and nights dealing with some personal issues. Enough said. Anywho…back to what I was talking about. Writing with very little sleep. Have you ever done it? Did you actually accomplish anything? Were you able to read it?
The reason I ask is that I have written while on little sleep. And trust me, it was not readable. But at the time, I had a great idea and it couldn’t wait. I had to write it now. Since I couldn’t sleep, I sat in my living room, laptop ready and began to type like a mad woman. The ideas rolled out of me in a flow I’ve never felt before. I couldn’t type fast enough, my fingers flew across the keyboard like lightning.  As I wrote I told myself this was the one that was going to take me to the top. Three hours later I had several chapters done and sleep was calling. I saved the document, then staggered off to bed. Despite being dog tired, I was hyped up about the epic novel I had just started. For the first time in days, I slept like a baby.
I should have stayed asleep.
Excited, I woke, ran to my laptop even before having breakfast and opened the document. I stared at the screen, blinking as if that would change what I saw before me. Nope, nothing changed. It was still crap.  There wasn’t a single sentence in the five chapters that made sense. I kid you not. Picture yourself, eyes closed, typing away. Now open your eyes. How well did you do? Probably better than I did while sleep deprived. My sentences looked similar to this.
Asdjoiefn gruhlasd ueoihas sa[ksdnkcfpos
Seriously! Yet in my mind, and in my sleep deprived vision I saw sentences of great writing. Paragraphs that were off the charts.

And do you think I could remember any of the idea when I woke? Nope, not a trickle came to me. How is that possible? People do strange things while sleep deprived. I wrote the greatest crap story ever written. I’ve learned my lesson. If I’m too tired to think, or I’ve gone days with little sleep, I don’t write.

The Outsiders Stole My Child's Innocence - And That's Okay

What was the first “adult” book you read?
And by adult I don’t mean x-rated, but that first book that wasn’t about Ramona Quimby or Superfudge. That first book to address adult themes and where terrible things happened to the characters you loved.
As the school year drew to a close, my oldest daughter came home and told me her class was reading The Outsiders. Uh-ho, I thought. Here it comes. My tender-hearted eighth-grade child is reading her first not-so happy book. I smiled, told her how that book was branded into my brain forever, but kept mum.
The next day I asked her what part she was at, and she told me how they were at the movies. Then she gushed about how Johnny was her favorite. “He’s so adorable.” And yes, my child gushes.
Ack! What do I say now?! Do I warn her about what is to come, or do I let her experience the joys and pain when reading a book that sucks you in and makes you care about the characters?
I said nothing. Just smiled again, and immediately posted my quandary on Facebook like a good mother does.
But still, I said nothing, for that is the joy and beauty of reading. Becoming immersed in an author’s world, falling in love with a character and crying when horribleness befalls them. By spoiling the ending, I would have taken away the awe of discovery. Of riding the emotional wave the author had set her on.
Books draw us in and capture us in ways movie and television do not. They move and inspire us down to our soul because we can remember where we were as we read the words that changed us. The feel of the paper beneath our fingers as we turned the page to keep going. How we stayed up till four am because we had to know what happens next. How could I as a mother and an author take that away from her?
I couldn’t. So I waited. And the day came. Yes, she was sad. But she loved the story, and it was also the first time I saw her sit for hours on end and read a book. Score for literature!
Reading is magical. Books are magical. May your next bit of magic be a one-click or bookstore away.
Happy reading and until next time y’all! Until next time!

Some Sugar with Your Spice- Sweetest Kisses

It's a book birthday!!

Sweetest Kisses book four in the Sprawling A Ranch Series is out now at your favorite retailer.

Adam may be the baby of his family, and the youngest on the ranch, but that man is in no way childish, especially when it comes to those he loves. And I loved pairing him up to Nic, who I identified with entirely too much. There is a piece of me in all of my heroines, and Nic is the high school version of me. The girl with the pink hair who was ready to explore the world. Yeah... I'm still working on that.

*And for your long time readers, you may recognize the mention of a certain Marine that had to go undercover.  *cough*cough*Adamantium *cough*

Pick up your copy today!

Small-town life fits Adam Maguire like a pair of favorite blue jeans, while Nicolette Fournier finds it as constricting as a straitjacket. But when this good ol’ country boy and rock n roll princess come together, sparks fly hot enough to melt the icing on the delicious cakes in Nic’s bake shop.
As the youngest of six brothers, nothing is more important to Adam than family, and he believes Nic would make a great addition to his. Only Nic is counting the days to when she has fulfilled familial obligations and can return to her life of open roads and adventure, leaving bad childhood memories in her rearview mirror. To make this free spirit his, Adam will have to pull out all of the stops to convince her that the only bed he wants to set his cowboy boots under are hers, and home wouldn’t be complete without her Doc Martens beside them.
Excerpt-
Criminy. No wonder Nic looked as if she’d swallowed a live bull frog when he brought her to The Crescent. And it also made sense as to why she was so gun-shy around people and insisted on being called Nic after hearing the way Angela said her name, as if “Nicolette” was something icky found on the bottom of her shoe. Was this how Nic had been treated all her life? Looked at with scorn just because she marched to the beat of her own drum? It sickened him to know that it was probably the case.

Even so, that didn’t mean he needed to allow that kind of stupidity to continue.

“Nic!” he shouted, pushing his way closer to the staircase that led up to the stage.

She caught his gaze through the gaps between the wide slats of the cage and winked. With a rebel yell, she gestured to the DJ, who then cranked up the volume on the guitar wailing opening of “Bad Girlfriend” by Theory of a Dead Man.

The crowd went wild as Nic launched into a dance routine worthy of the finest burlesque show. She shimmied, she bounced, she jumped up and hung from the top of the cage, kicking her legs into positions Adam had only seen in strip clubs.

Torn between lust and fear for her safety, he watched as she whipped the crowd into a frenzy, moving with acrobatic skill as she climbed down and fell to her knees to twirl across the floor. She was sex incarnate as she temped and teased with a roll of her hips and shoulders. As Adam glanced around, he noticed every man gazed at Nic with passion glittering in their eyes as their girls looked on with envy.

“Holy shit,” exclaimed one of the fellas crowding behind him. “Is that the chick from the bakery?”

“Oh yeah,” his buddy answered. “I didn’t realize she was so hot.”

“Totally. I’d glaze her doughnuts any day.”

“Shake that ass, girl,” they shouted. “Shake that ass.”

Adam rounded on them with a growl. “Shut the fuck up. That’s my girl you’re talking about.”

“Seriously?” The taller of the two slapped him on the back. “You lucky bastard.”

Another whoop from the crowd brought his attention back to the stage, where Nic was now hanging from the outside of the cage, swiveling her body and encouraging people to spray their beers all over as if shooting water from a fire hose. As she tried to dodge the sprays of foam, she wore the biggest grin while she laughed and struck a pose as the song came to a whirlwind finish.

“All right, all right. Let’s hear it for Nicolette,” the DJ shouted over the thunderous applause.

Nic was helped down from the stage by a few admiring cowboys. Ignoring their attempts to keep her attention, she kept her gaze firmly on Adam as she passed a pissed-off Angela. Adam’s ex fumed, with rage in her eyes and her hands clenched by her sides as beer dripped off the end of her nose. Guess that would teach her for trying to get an up close look at what she thought would be a train wreck.

“How was that?” Nic asked while her sweat glistened bosom heaved as she caught her breath.

“That was…ahhh.” He lifted his hat to run his hand through his hair as his brain struggled to form a sentence. The words claim and mine flashed behind his closed eyes like a billboard on Times Square. “Damn, girl. All I can think to say right now is I really want to show you the flatbed of my truck.”

Those wondrous breasts of hers bounced with her laughter. “Then let’s go, cowboy.”

His voice dropped an octave. “Are you sure? Because I wanna give you a real thorough tour.”

The corner of her mouth curled up with a wicked tilt, and she curled her fingers around his belt buckle, brushing the hard length of his erection that was testing the integrity of his jeans. “What are we waiting for?”
Fuck yeah.

Read, love, enjoy!

Emerald City Comic Con with Anna Alexander

Right now I am winging my way to Las Vega to the Romantic Times Convention, but more on that later. This weekend was all about the Emerald City Comic Con.

A few of our students
The best thing about this year's event was I presented a panel! Yep, Danielle Monsch and I presented our business of writing workshop. We had an excellent turn out, and I was so happy to see so many future romance novelists at the Con.

It's the Romi and Michelle show!
But the fun didn't end there. After our book signing, I roamed the halls and talked to many other authors about marketing and genre fiction. Very eye opening and fascinating.

Now, I can tell you more, but I'd prefer to show you the awesome time I had.

Soooo happy
As for the RT Convention, I'll be signing at the giant bookfair and FAN-day. If you'll be at the Rio, check out the hashtag #RT16 and look for flash contests I'll be hosting throughout the week.

Until next time, y'all!

The Perfect Marine- Thallium's Submission

The Alpha submissive. An intriguing character indeed, and one I find fascinating.

Many assume the submissive male is always a doormat, a wimp, a weakling. A myth that can't be further from the truth (most of the time.) The Alpha submissive is a fierce warrior. A champion for his woman, putting her happiness and needs before all else. He will fight for her, defend her, and worship at her feet. A delicious cocktail of strength and supplication that makes me want to curl into this fine specimen's strong arms.

That was my vision for Thallium in the Elite Ghosts boxset. A deadly warrior who always gets the job done. He is a man that finds comfort in fulfilling orders. And in Athena, he has found a woman who's courage and honor he wishes to serve until the end of time. That is if he can keep her ex-husband and Red Wolf from killing her first. I loved writing their story, especially the wacky things Athena would think of to say to try to make Thallium laugh during sex. Cracked me up. But the best compliment I had was when I overheard my editor tell another author that I wrote a heroine that every woman over forty wishes she could be. Awesome!

Read, love, and enjoy!

Thallium's Submission

From now on the only orders he will follow are hers.

Timothy “Thallium” LaStrange is the perfect Marine, and takes the phrase “live to serve” to an entirely new level as he carries out any order he is given. His mission: Protect the ex-wife of the president of one of the most notorious motorcycle clubs before she testifies to put her former husband away forever. When their location is compromised, Thallium is cut off from his team and must take the lead to keep his charge alive—a task that becomes increasingly difficult the more time he spends with the sexy, dynamic woman who makes him want to fall to his knees in worship.

Athena knew what she risked trying to put all of the ugliness in her life to an end. And now, that includes a young, battle-scarred Marine who is the only thing standing between her and death. Thallium’s strength and honor are too beautiful to put in harm’s way, and when he admits his need to submit to her every desire, she’ll do anything in her power to protect him.

“Tell me about this group you work for,” she said, desperate for more information about this intriguing man.
     “I can’t. We don’t exist.”
“You can’t tell me anything? Not one tiny little detail?”
Cockiness slid into his grin. “We’re really good at hiding.”
     “And?”
     “That’s it.”
     “No, really.”
Nothing. Not a word. Not a sound. Just a lift of his brow as he finished cleaning his plate.
She blew a raspberry in his direction and stood. “You’re terrible.”
Thallium stopped her as she reached for his plate. “I’ll get them.”
     “You cooked. I’ll clean.”
“Athena, I’ll do it.” He jumped from his chair and blocked her way to the kitchen sink.
     “I’ve got it, Thall.”
He latched onto the plate in her hand and pulled. “No. I’ve got it.”
“Why are you fighting me on this? I can clean a few dishes. I’m not an invalid or weak.”
“I don’t think you are w-weak. I’m here to provide for you.”
“Doing dishes is providing for me? You don’t have to take care of me.”
“I know—I’m not.” His eyes darted around the room as if the walls would give him the words to explain what was going on in his head. “I want, I need to…serve you.”
Serve you. The hairs on her neck stood on end at the way he phrased those words. “I don’t know if I understand.”
“I was, am, a good Marine. I follow orders. It makes me feel safe. I complete a task. I’ve done a good job. That’s my reward.”
“So that’s what this is about? Your orders are to take care of me, so this is just part of your job?”
“No—yes, no. My orders are to protect you.” His eyelids lowered with desire. “To serve you, that’s on me. I want to serve you in any capacity you will have of me.”
     “And by any capacity…”
“Any capacity,” he said in a husky timbre that left no doubt to his meaning. “I am yours, Athena.”
     “Why?”
Excuse me, girlfriend. Why are you questioning this? Here is a hunky man wanting to fulfill your every desire. What is the problem?
What was the problem? The problem was he was a hunky man she had known for less than twenty-four hours. And by the way he spoke, it sounded as if his wish went beyond just sex. A whole lot more.
“Why do you want to serve me?”
“I told you. You are an amazing woman. Strong. Brave. Gorgeous. Sexy. Is it so hard to imagine I’d want you?”
“But why do you want to serve me? Because it sounds like what you want is for me to be in control.”
His breath caught and a light flared in his eyes before he schooled his expression.
Ahhh. Now it was all becoming clear.
“Is that what you want, Thallium? Are you submissive and you want me to be your Domme?”
As his breathing escalated and his gaze bounced around the room, she grew afraid he was going to hyperventilate. He swallowed hard and answered so softly, she almost didn’t hear it. “Yes.”
