Halloween is Almost Here!

It’s only a little over a week until Halloween. On Halloween night, I like to light the candle in the pumpkin, turn off the lights, and put on my favorite Halloween movies.

There are tons of great ones out there to choose from, but here are 5 of my favorites:

1. The Crow (1994)—One of my favorite movies of all time and probably the one I’ve watched the most. It’s so dark, yet so hopeful. Brandon Lee’s performance is incredible. Great cast and story, plenty of action, and one fantastic soundtrack.

2. Underworld (2003)—Vampires and lycans are at war. Selene, a vampire warrior, makes the mistake of falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.

3. Dracula Untold (2014)—A fresh look at the traditional Dracula story. I love this movie. I mean, what’s not to love about Luke Evans as Vlad Tepes, the prince who must become a monster feared by his own people in order to obtain the power needed to protect them.

4. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)—As promised, this movie closely follows Stoker’s version of Dracula. Great film. Gary Oldman plays a scary and seductive Dracula.

5. Lost Boys (1987)—It’s hard to believe this movie is 30 years old, but it holds up. It’s one of my favorite vampire movies of all time. And the soundtrack is amazing.

I know this is a top 5 list, but I have to mention Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp (1999) and the Disney animated version (1949). I love them both. The animated story is beautifully crafted. And while the Depp version of the story goes off the rails near the end, I still enjoy it. And, of course, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” is a show I have to watch every year.

However you chose to celebrate, I hope you have a Spooktacular holiday! And if you’re looking for a sexy vampire book to read, you might want to check out Burning Ash, the latest release in my Forgotten Brotherhood series.

Happy Halloween!

Burning Ash

Forgotten Brotherhood, Book 3

No one is more surprised than Asher, one of the oldest vampires on Earth, that he's attracted to vamp hunter Jo Radcliffe. She's smart, a talented slayer, and she's gorgeous. Something about her pulls at him, like no one ever has before. For a man, whose name strikes fear in everyone––this is something new and intriguing. And quite possibly deadly, if she discovers his secret.

Jo has two things in common with the handsome Asher––they are both slayers and someone is messing with them in a very-much-trying-to-kill-them way. She's not so happy about joining forces with a dude she doesn't know. But he's sexy as hell and really good at his job as one of the Forgotten Brotherhood, whose business it is to execute misbehaving paranormals.

She knows she's bait in a larger plot to harm Asher and the Brotherhood. And there is nothing he won't do, no line he won't cross, to keep her safe––which may be the weakness that destroys them both.

TEASER:

He sauntered out of the dark and fully into the candlelight. The flames flickered over his face, exposing a strong jaw, straight nose, and high forehead. His blond hair was pulled back in a short tail at his nape. His skin was olive-toned or tanned, hard to say. Piercing brown eyes stared at her.

Good looking was much to tame. Handsome didn’t fit either. There was something dangerous and predatory lurking beneath the surface. Primal. Compelling. Yeah, that was it.

It was time for her to leave.

Summer Movies and more...

The weather has not been good where I live this summer. It’s been cool with a lot of foggy and damp days. I’ve still managed to find pockets of time to get out and enjoy the sunshine when it does show.

And when it’s rainy, I enjoy the movies. I’ve seen some great ones this summer. Here are a few of them:

1. The Lion King—Amazing remake.

2. Hobbs and Shaw—So much fun and action.

3. Yesterday—A quieter movie. Great music and an overall wonderful story.

4. Spiderman: Far From Home—It’s everything you want and expect from a Spiderman movie.

5. Aladdin—Even better than I anticipated. I loved it.

6. Rocketman—Biopic of Elton John. Unflinching and honest. And great music.

7. The Secret Life of Pets 2—A great family movie.

8. Shaft—Three generations of Shaft men. Definitely fun and filled with action.

If you love space mercenaries, you’ll love the Marks Mercenaries. These brothers are tough and focused. Their goal—finding their sister who was abducted years ago.

The first four books in the series have been released—Rescuing Rory, Unexpected Angel, Liberating Lacey, and Salvaging Abby.

Here’s a tease from Liberating Lacey, book 3.

Teaser:

“What happened this afternoon? Did security find you after?”

He was stunned by her genuine distress. No one, other than his brothers, had ever shown the tiniest bit of concern over his well-being. Because of his physical size and level-headedness, even his parents had stopped worrying about him by the time he was twelve, assuming he could take care of himself.

Letting his blaster hang by its shoulder strap, he cupped her face in his hands. “I’m fine.” He kept his voice low, barely a whisper. The last thing he wanted was to be discovered with Lacey. “You?”

She’d taken the bigger risk.

She shrugged. “They’re used to me being odd, so there was no problem.” There was an underlying thread of acceptance, as well as an echo of old hurt in her words.

He forced himself to ignore it. It was time to get down to business.
But he, the man who never lost focus during a mission, got distracted by a pair of seeking green eyes, a pert nose, and a set of lush lips.

Silently cursing himself a fool, he leaned down and pressed his mouth against hers. After this afternoon, he expected her to push him away, maybe even slap him. Hell, she could call for security if she wanted.

That cooled his ardor. But before he could pull back, Lacey went up on her toes and kissed him back. She was a space siren, an apparition brought on by too many months in deep space. If he weren’t careful, she’d lure him to his death.

But what a way to go.

Liberating Lacey
Marks Mercenaries, Book 3

Garth Marks and his brothers are space mercenaries and traders. Their life’s mission is to find their younger sister, who was kidnapped ten years before. Their search has led them to Eden, a planet that is home to a cult-like group.

Lacey Freshlan wants to get away from Eden, and the strangers who have come here might be her ticket out. Garth is willing to use the sizzling attraction between them to get information from her, but he won’t agree to take her with him. As much as he’s drawn to her, Garth won’t risk the safety of his family.

When Lacey foils a plot to poison them, Garth takes her with them when they flee. But they are not free yet. Betrayal and lies lead to a battle not only for their safety but also for their hearts.

Movies About Writers

Even before I was a writer I loved movies about writers and other creative people. I find it fascinating to see how their lives affect their work.

Here are some of my favorite movies about famous writers.

J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most famous fantasy writers of all time. His Lord of the Rings series is a favorite of readers and moviegoers alike. Tolkien, in theatres now, follows the author through his hardships as an orphan, to his time in school—where he forms lasting friendships that change his life. It also gives us a glimpse into how his time spent fighting in World War 1 had a heavy influence on his work.

Becoming Jane is a wonderful film that stars Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen. A wonderful look at the struggles she had on her journey to being one of the most loved authors of all times.

Miss Potter is a whimsical and wonderful film that depicts the life of the beloved children’s writer Beatrix Potter. Renee Zellweger plays the lead role. Miss Potter was an eccentric young woman who defied convention and channeled her passion for nature to create books that have endured.

Do you have any favorite films about real (or fictional) writers?

And if you’re looking for a book to read, maybe you’ll check out the first book in my new sci-fi romance series. If you love sexy space mercenaries, you’ll love the Marks family.

Rescuing Rory
Marks Mercenaries, Book 1

Betrayed and sold into slavery after her father’s death, Rory Banks finds herself dancing on the Exos, a deep-space pleasure ship. So when a stranger breaks open her cage and offers her a way out, she grabs it and runs.

Kal Marks and his brothers are space mercenaries and traders who have spent the past ten years searching for their younger sister. Their hunt has led them to the Exos and to Rory, who they hope will have information. But Kal never counted on wanting Rory or on the sexual tension and scorching heat that blazes between them. This mission just got a lot more complicated.

Avengers- Infinity Wars Part 1- Holy Sh!t

Howdy all!

It's May 4th, and based on box office receipts and social media posts, most of the world has seen the latest Avengers movie. You know I'm going to have an opinion. But don't fret if you haven't checked out this blockbuster yet. No spoilers here. Mostly. :)

Infinity Wars picks up right as Thor: Ragnarok ends. Right as it ended. It's been about two years since Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther would have taken place at the same time as Ragnarok. Got it?

Then the chaos ensued. But why rehash it here, when you can hear my thoughts taken right after experiencing the epic live.

If I had been a little more relaxed, I would have been a bit more ready to shout my "oh nos!" and "Wakanda Forever!" but I kept those inside and watched, wide-eyed as the action unfolded.

Now I know, I know. Some people have serious issues with this movie. And I know there are plot holes. But I was happy with how the events unfolded. For now. We'll have to wait to see how Captain Marvel and Infinity Wars part two shakes out. I have a suspicion I'm going to see some hankies for that one.

Until next time y'all!
And if you need a super hero story with a happily ever after, check out Genesis or Hero Revealed.

Mid-Winter Entertainment

It’s mid-winter, a time when Christmas is far behind us and spring feels as though it’s never going to get here. I know I find this time of year the hardest. It’s cold, it’s snowy, and I spend too much time huddle inside.

It’s a wonderful time of years to go to movies, which I do. I love to take myself out to the theatre, usually to the afternoon showing as there aren’t as many people around, and settle in and enjoy being taken away for a couple of hours. I tend to sit the third row back from the front. Yes, I’m a creature of habit. I also never bother with snacks, as I usually take myself out for lunch before I see the movie since the theatre is in the local mall.

Lately, I’ve seen several fantastic movies.

The 15:17 to Paris, a movie about three Americans who discover a terrorist plot aboard a train while in France. It’s a true story, but what makes it even more interesting is that the three men actually play themselves in the movie. It’s a reminder that we are not defined by our failures and that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

The Shape of Water highlights the strange and beautiful relationship between a lonely, mute janitor and an amphibious creature behind held in captivity. It’s set at a top secret research facility in the 1960s. While there are some gratuitous nude scenes at the beginning, the love story is beautiful and the storyline makes you consider the definition of monsters, and that it takes more than a surface appearance to be one. It really is what’s on the inside that matters.

Black Panther is the latest movie from Marvel and lives up to the hype. T’Challa returns home to take his rightful place as King of Wakanda, but secrets from the past and threats from the present collide to place not only himself but also his country in danger. This movie is visually stunning, has a complex storyline, and the women are FIERCE!

While I love going to the movies, the mid-winter is also a wonderful time to read. And if you’re looking for a book, Wolf in her Soul is on sale for a very limited time for only 99-cents. If you haven’t checked it out yet, now might be the perfect time.

Wolf in her Soul
Salvation Pack, Book 8

Detective Reece Gallagher has spent the last decade working as a cop in Chicago so he can search for her—the red-haired woman who haunts his dreams. He’s just about ready to give up and go home to Salvation, North Carolina, when he finally finds her. But she’s the assault victim on a case he’s working on, and there’s a full-blooded werewolf who wants her dead. He needs to keep her safe and convince her she’s his mate.

Hannah Burdette has a secret she’s never told anyone. But there is someone who knows who—or rather, what—she is. There’s a stalker after her who plans to rid the world of her “impure” blood. When the cop she meets turns out to be a werewolf and claims she doesn’t have to be alone anymore, she’s wary. But where better to hide from a bloodthirsty hunter than in the middle of North Carolina with the security of a pack surrounding her?

My Top Five Holiday Movies

I want to wish all of you a very Happy Holidays! I love this time of year—the baking, the presents, the music and fun. One of the things I do every Christmas season is watch the seasonal movies and shows. We all have our favorites, but these are 5 that I watch every year.

1. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. This is the movie that kicks off the holiday season for me. I still laugh, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

2. Scrooge. I watch at last three versions every year. My favorite is the Albert Finney one from 1970. I also love the Muppet’s Christmas Carol and the Alastair Sim version from 1951. (I also try and fit Billy Murray’s Scrooged in there too.)

3. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966 animated version). I’ve been watching it my entire life and still love it.

4. A Charlie Brown Christmas. This 1965 animated story still makes me smile and brings me hope.

5. Arthur Christmas. This movie is only a few years old, but I love it because it counters the cynicism that has run rampant in a lot of newer holiday movies.

Here are five more, because five just isn’t enough: Frosty the Snowman, Little Woman, Love Actually, It’s a Wonderful Life, and The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017).

And if you’re looking for a new book, you might want to check out Endless Chase, the final book in the Dalakis Passion vampire series.

Since the night her parents were brutally murdered, Katya Markova has been driven by a dark quest for vengeance. When her search for the killers leads her to the heart of Transylvania and the ancestral home of the Dalakis, she hopes to finally take her revenge and put her horrific memories and the souls of her parents to rest. Then she meets the mesmerizing Chase Deveraux, and his intensely passionate touch threatens to weaken her resolve as she surrenders to his sensual promise.

With his life in disarray, Chase has retreated to the remote castle of the Dalakis clan to sort things out in isolation, but instead is inexplicably drawn to the mysterious Katya. Instantly spellbound by her tough warrior exterior and compelling beauty, Chase finds that Katya captivates him like no other woman has before—until he learns of her dark intent and is torn between his own needs and those of his family.

Because Katya is enmeshed in a world of lies and deceptions, and has brought that world to the Dalakis doorstep. As their unquenchable passion spirals to incredible sensual heights, Chase and Katya will be forced to make a choice, one that could destroy the Dalakis clan for all time or unite the desperate young lovers for eternity…

This is a revised edition of a previous published book.

Halloween is Almost Here

It’s only a little over a week until all the kids are out trick-or-treating.

Halloween is also a great time to read a paranormal book. If you’re looking for one, be sure to check out Eternal Brothers, book four of the Dalakis Passion vampire series.

ETERNAL BROTHERS

When an anonymous late-night tip sends reporter Sophia Daring to the cemetery, she isn't prepared for what she find there---a grisly murder scene and the body of a woman completely drained of blood. Sophia's never been scared off a story before, but his time all the clues point to one disturbing conclusion: this was the work of the mysterious and dangerous Dalakis brothers. And just as unsettling for the fiercely independent Sophia is the irresistible pull of the stranger also working the case, the sensually compelling Zane York.

A ex-cop, Zane has made it his personal mission to prove that the secretive Dalakis family are powerful vampires and ruthless killers. But when his investigation takes him to New Orleans and their latest victim, he begins to suspect that the Dalakis are being framed by an enemy as dark and mysterious as they are. And even as he struggles with his doubts about the family, there's no doubt about his hungry response to the hauntingly beautiful Sophia. He knows he must make her his own, whatever the cost.

As the smoldering chemistry between Sophia and Zane ignites in a delirious haze of passion, they will find themselves immersed in the Dalakis family secrets and the trail of murder that leads to their door. And as their fears and suspicions war with an unquenchable desire, she and Zane will discover that a secret from the past may pose the deadliest threat yet...

Logan- I can barely find the words

Logan. Okay. Let’s go there.

Actually, I don’t know if I can. It's been a week since I attended a late night showing by myself, and was left weeping and with the intense need to be held.

The last installment of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is not even in the same universe as the previous X-Men movies. And by universe, I mean do not try to reconcile any part of the storyline to any of the previous movies. Really. This is a stand alone story with the same actors who have portrayed these characters in the past. That's about it. This movie is a Quentin Tarantino film on crack. It is violent. Violent. We’re not talking superhero movie violence either, but graphic, gory, violence.

But let’s sidestep the violence for a moment. This movie started dark and was without a happy moment in the entire film. The year is 2029. Logan works as a for-hire limo driver and is trying to save money to buy a boat. Why a boat? Out on the open sea is the only safe place he can think of to take Charles Xavier. The professor suffers from dementia, and with a mind as powerful his, he has been known to have psychic attacks that have left people dead. Their troubled existence is interrupted when Logan is hired to take a woman and a young girl to North Dakota.

Logan is not a superhero move. It is about a man who used to be a superhero who is doing everything in his power to keep the few people he dares to care about alive. This is a drama of the first-rate order.

Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart are at the top of their game. The acting is superb, and the cinematography is visually compelling. But by the end of the movie I was spent. My heart had been ripped out, slashed into a million pieces, and stuffed back into my chest.

But did I like the movie?

I don’t know. As the final credits rolled, I was left wondering what was the purpose? If the message was there is always hope, I think there could have been another way to go about it. Or that life carries on… um…okay? But really, why?

If you’re a Wolverine fan, you should see Logan. Finish out Hugh’s phenomenal run. If you’re not a fan, then you may leave confused, disturbed, and as if you were the one impaled on his adamantium claws.
This is one of those films that I will never have to see again. Every scene is imprinted on my brain. The opening sequence, the hideout in Mexico, the casino, the hospital. Eric LaSalle. Nate!!! :( :( :( All burned into my brain. Definitely a movie that will leave an impression on me forever.

Thank you, Hugh! You will be missed.
