June Update

This has been a strange year so far. The entire world is in upheaval. Like all of you, I’ve been adjusting to the new reality.

Many people have used the time spent self-isolating at home to get into shape, learn a new language, take up a hobby. If you can manage to do that, my hat goes off to you. It’s impressive.

Of course, many people have worked through the pandemic, which adds stress to their home and personal lives. They put their lives on the line so we can be safe and have the supplies we need to survive. Your courage and bravery are deeply appreciated.

Me? I’m just trying to get by the best I can.

I work from home, so I’ve been trying to work. Not always easy. Some writers have lost themselves in their stories and are producing at a fast rate. It’s been the opposite for me. I’ve pushed to write anything. The events of the outside world are pushing down hard. I’m hopeful the longer days of summer and warmer weather will help.

I talk to family daily, which has helped keep me sane. And I’ve recently spent time with them in person (while taking precautions) for the first time in months. I’m healthy, but all my family falls into high-risk categories, so we’ve been being super careful.

I’ve watched movies and television, mostly in the evenings, but my go-to is always reading. I’ve been re-reading a lot lately. I call them comfort reads, or comfort books. I know the story, so I know what I’m getting.

I have read plenty of new books by authors I love and am grateful for them.

If you’re looking for something to read, check out my Forgotten Brotherhood series.

Arctic Bite
Forgotten Brotherhood, Book Two

Being immortal doesn’t mean you can’t die. It just means you’re damn hard to kill.

When Alexei Medvedev joined the Forgotten Brotherhood—paranormals hired to assassinate other paranormals—he knew it wouldn’t be a cake walk. But his next target is one of Death’s own Reapers gone rogue. For the first time since he started this gig, “damn hard to kill” feels more like “damn near impossible.”

Tracking Cassie Dobbs brings him to a remote bar in small-town Alaska, where this hot-as-hell Reaper is casually serving drinks, as if she doesn’t have a bounty on her head from Death himself. Alexei is dangerously intrigued. Everyone in the Brotherhood knows the first rule: don’t fall for your target.

But Alexei soon has bigger problems to face than an unexpected attraction. They only send assassins after those who deserve to die…or so he’s been made to believe. Now that he’s met Cassie, though, he’s not so sure.

What if everything he’s been told is a lie, and the person he’s been sent to kill is the only one who knows the truth?

Where I Write

Authors are strange creatures. We all have our space where we’re most productive. It varies from author to author from an office, a coffeeshop, the living room sofa, in the car waiting for their kids at sports or school (prior to the isolation order and shutdown due to covid-19), or on the commute.

My space is a 3’ by 6’ corner of the living room. (I got out the measuring tape and took an accurate reading.) It’s big enough for a small 3’ shelf. In front of the shelf is my chair and desk. A screen sits in front of the desk. That’s it. I’ve written all but two of my books there. And I’ve written and published over 100 books. It’s tiny but it really works for me. I’m sure I’ll move someday. Wherever I go, I’ll create a new space and keep on writing more books.

My latest release, ARCTIC BITE, was written and edited at this small desk.

Werewolf Loving

The lone wolf stands on the hillside on a dark night, staring up at the moon. He tilts back his head and howls. The bleak and lonely sound echoes through the forest. He is alone, watching guard over his pack. He’s also more than just a wolf. He is a werewolf.

What is it about werewolves that fascinate us? Tales of such creatures—part man and part wolf—are sprinkled throughout European folklore. Some stories are even older, going back to ancient Greece. Part of us fears such a creature, while another part is drawn to the very idea.

Werewolves make perfect heroes for romance novels. They understand the importance of pack and family. They’re primal men who live by instinct as much as intellect. They’re stronger than a human male and have enhanced senses. One minute, they can be human, and the next they can shift into a magnificent and deadly wolf. What’s not to love?

Okay, so maybe they’re a tad bossy and have a tendency to be more than a little overbearing. There is nothing more dangerous than a wolf protecting his mate. It takes a very special woman to be able to love and live with such a man.

And there are a whole pack of men just like this living in Salvation, North Carolina. Interested? Check out the Salvation Pack series, starting with Wolf at the Door.

Wolf at the Door
Salvation Pack, Book 1

Gwendolyn Jones is working on an article about werewolves, not that she believes they exist. But there are people out there who do, like the nervous man who slips her a flash drive with information he claims will prove to the world shifters are out there. Gwen starts questioning just what to believe when two very real werewolves come knocking on her cabin door later that night.

Someone has a flash drive with pictures that could endanger his pack, and alpha Jacque LaForge will do whatever it takes to destroy it. But something deep inside him ignites when he knocks on the door of that "someone". He didn't think he'd find a mate, or that when he did, she'd be human. But now that he has found Gwen, he knows he has a fight on his hands to protect her from his former vengeful pack who are out to hurt him by any means necessary.

Welcome to Fall

Tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox signalling the end of summer and the start of fall. As much as I dislike cold weather, I do love this time of year.

It’s time to pull out the cozy sweaters and wool socks and pull them on to stay warm. The heat comes on and the flannel sheets go back on the bed. (Did I mention I really dislike being cold.)

The air is crisp and the leaves are a variety of gorgeous and vibrant colors. I may be an adult, but I love kicking the dry leaves when I go on a walk.

The fall shows come back on television and hockey season begins. (I’m Canadian so it’s hockey for me, not football.)

It also starts the holiday season, which begins in October with Thanksgiving (Canadian), Halloween, Thanksgiving (American), and Christmas.

For me, fall is also a time of new beginnings, even more so than January 1st. So it’s time to take a deep breath and embrace the new season.

And if you’re looking for a book to read, you might want to check out my latest release.

More Drakons are Coming...

I have a new book releasing on August 27th! I'm really excited about Drakon Unchained. I'd originally planned on writing only 4 books for the Blood of the Drakon series but couldn't seem to stop.

I love writing paranormal novels. The possibilities are limitless. As the author, I create the world in which my characters exist. In this series there are drakons--the sons of pure-blooded dragons and human women. Their sires are long gone from this world, but their sons, the drakons, remain. They are thousands of years old, powerful and intelligent, cunning and ruthless, a perfect combination between primal dragon and human.

But they still have enemies who will stop at nothing to capture and control a drakon.

Drakon Unchained
Blood of the Drakon, Book 5

Victoria Marshall is living a lie. She works for a member of the Knights of the Dragon, a secret society that traps and uses dragons for their own gain. As a child, she made an unlikely friend—a drakon. He went missing, and she’s spent the past twenty years searching for him. The only thing distracting her from her mission is Luther Henderson, her boss’s new head of security.

Luther is also living a lie. One, if discovered, could lead to a fate worse than death. He’s attracted to Victoria, but can’t fully trust her, doesn’t know if she’s truly innocent or a true member of the Knights. It’s not only his life at stake, but those of the people he loves.

As they’re thrust deeper into the dangerous dealings of the Knights, they each have to share their secrets in order to survive.

TEASER:

Luther didn’t feel much sympathy for Dent or the others. If you were foolish enough to take on such a powerful creature you couldn’t expect it to be easy. He wondered how many other Knights had died at the hands of dragons.

For as much as he knew about the Knights, Luther knew it was only the tip of the iceberg. They didn’t share easily. Many of the men working beneath him didn’t know anything about the Knights. All they knew was they worked security for powerful people, the kind of people who didn’t allow mistakes or betrayals to go unpunished. Most of the men were former military who wanted the good wages they made and were used to following orders and not asking questions.

That worked out well for Temple and the other Knights.

Unfortunately, he had a sinking feeling Victoria would ask too many questions. Oh, she wouldn’t ask them directly. The woman was nothing if not intelligent. But she would ask them in her mind and that would drive her to seek answers.

He’d have to protect her.

The rightness of his decision settled over him, but he wasn’t entirely comfortable with it. How could he protect her and still infiltrate deeper into the inner realms of the Knights? He’d have to stay away from her, to keep her on the periphery of whatever was going to happen in Utah.

That was the safest way to handle the situation for both of them. But it wasn’t what he wanted. What he truly wanted was to take Victoria to his home, strip her out of her prim and proper suits, and discover what she wore beneath them. Would it be lace like he’d fantasized or white cotton? Did she wear pantyhose or stockings? These were things he wanted to know, needed to know until his blood practically simmered with impatience.

But he might have to live with the deprivation of never knowing. And that was a crime he could lay directly at Temple’s door. There would be a reckoning, an accounting for all the man’s crimes, but it wouldn’t happen today.

TV Shows to Enjoy

Spring is finally here, or at least that’s what the calendar says. The possibility of warmer days and the first daffodils are here. But there are still some stormy days ahead before summer arrives. Plenty of time to watch some good shows on television.

Now I may be one of the few people in North America who doesn’t have Netflix. I always say I have enough shows to watch now. I don’t have time to add more. And when the Networks run out of shows, then I can get Netflix and I’ll have plenty of great viewing.

That being said, here are a few of my favorites.

Supernatural. I came to this show late. It was on a station when I’d sit down for supper—yes I know I shouldn’t eat and watch TV but I do—and I got hooked. Now I won’t miss it and watch every week. Love me some Sam and Dean Winchester.

The Big Bang Theory. This one I’ve been watching since the first show aired. It’s a half hour of smart comedy. I always laugh. And in this day and age, that’s priceless.

Lucifer. The devil lives in Los Angeles, owns a nightclub, and helps a detective solve crimes. I mean, who doesn’t want to watch that? Tom Ellis plays Lucifer so well, but it’s the cast of characters in this one that really makes it work.

I also enjoy The Blacklist, Blindspot, NCIS, and a couple more. (See why I don’t need Netflix yet.)

What shows do you enjoy?

And if you’re looking for a book to read, Wolf at the Door was just voted Best Paranormal/Urban Fantasy book of 2017 by the Love Romances Cafe readers.

Mid-Winter Entertainment

It’s mid-winter, a time when Christmas is far behind us and spring feels as though it’s never going to get here. I know I find this time of year the hardest. It’s cold, it’s snowy, and I spend too much time huddle inside.

It’s a wonderful time of years to go to movies, which I do. I love to take myself out to the theatre, usually to the afternoon showing as there aren’t as many people around, and settle in and enjoy being taken away for a couple of hours. I tend to sit the third row back from the front. Yes, I’m a creature of habit. I also never bother with snacks, as I usually take myself out for lunch before I see the movie since the theatre is in the local mall.

Lately, I’ve seen several fantastic movies.

The 15:17 to Paris, a movie about three Americans who discover a terrorist plot aboard a train while in France. It’s a true story, but what makes it even more interesting is that the three men actually play themselves in the movie. It’s a reminder that we are not defined by our failures and that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

The Shape of Water highlights the strange and beautiful relationship between a lonely, mute janitor and an amphibious creature behind held in captivity. It’s set at a top secret research facility in the 1960s. While there are some gratuitous nude scenes at the beginning, the love story is beautiful and the storyline makes you consider the definition of monsters, and that it takes more than a surface appearance to be one. It really is what’s on the inside that matters.

Black Panther is the latest movie from Marvel and lives up to the hype. T’Challa returns home to take his rightful place as King of Wakanda, but secrets from the past and threats from the present collide to place not only himself but also his country in danger. This movie is visually stunning, has a complex storyline, and the women are FIERCE!

While I love going to the movies, the mid-winter is also a wonderful time to read. And if you’re looking for a book, Wolf in her Soul is on sale for a very limited time for only 99-cents. If you haven’t checked it out yet, now might be the perfect time.

Wolf in her Soul
Salvation Pack, Book 8

Detective Reece Gallagher has spent the last decade working as a cop in Chicago so he can search for her—the red-haired woman who haunts his dreams. He’s just about ready to give up and go home to Salvation, North Carolina, when he finally finds her. But she’s the assault victim on a case he’s working on, and there’s a full-blooded werewolf who wants her dead. He needs to keep her safe and convince her she’s his mate.

Hannah Burdette has a secret she’s never told anyone. But there is someone who knows who—or rather, what—she is. There’s a stalker after her who plans to rid the world of her “impure” blood. When the cop she meets turns out to be a werewolf and claims she doesn’t have to be alone anymore, she’s wary. But where better to hide from a bloodthirsty hunter than in the middle of North Carolina with the security of a pack surrounding her?

Drakons are Here to Stay!

Popular or not, drakons are here to stay!

The publishing industry moves in cycles. Some years it’s all about billionaires and other years secret babies are popular or historical romance or vampires. You get the picture. But honestly, I really don’t know any dedicated romance readers who pay much attention to the trends. They know what they like and manage to find it.

The industry has changed a lot in the past fifteen years with the advent of ebooks and now self-publishing. Readers no longer have to wait for books to be popular in order to find a book they want to buy. I also love that there are dedicated epublishers out there willing to take a chance on an idea that may not fit the mainstream as well.

Which brings me to drakons—the offspring of dragons who visited our world about 4000 years ago and human women. They practically immortal, but really have no idea how long they’ll live. They have the cunning, strength, preternatural abilities, and instincts of the dragon, along with the intellect and emotions of a human. A deadly combination. And unlike their sires, their base form is that of a human. While their dragon fathers could hold a human form for a short span of time, a drakon can inhabit either human or dragon form indefinitely.

As you can well imagine, living in modern times does pose some unique challenges. When they shift to their dragon form, where can they fly? And how can they risk falling in love when they’re hunted for their blood, which prolongs the lives of humans.

They’re my creation and I love them. Or rather, they are allowing me to write their stories. Honestly, I’ve always said that writing for me is like taking dictation. I sit at the keyboard and wait for the characters to speak. And after more than 13 years of publishing and 90+ books it seems to work for me.

My modern drakons evolved from a futuristic novella I wrote for a now closed publisher more than a decade ago. I wanted to write more drakon stories, but this time I wanted to bring them into the modern world...our world. And thus was born the Blood of the Drakon series. The fourth book is due out on January 29th and I couldn’t be happier. And I’m not done yet. There are more drakon books coming.

Drakon’s Past

Blood of the Drakon, Book 4

Constance Owens has a gift for finding unique items in the most unlikely places, which comes in handy since she buys and sells artifacts and antiques for a living. When she purchases a set of four dragon statues, she has no idea just how unique they are, or that finding them will thrust her into a world of secret societies, men who think nothing of kidnapping and murder to get what they want, and dragon shifters.

Nic hasn’t survived for four thousand years by letting his guard down, and he doesn’t trust anyone except his drakon brothers. The loneliness haunting him has been getting worse since all his brothers have found their mates. And when he finds the woman his drakon recognizes instantly as his fated mate, he doubts he’ll ever have what his brothers have, because it seems she’s involved with the secret society of hunters who have been hunting and capturing his kind for hundreds of years.

Shifting magic, fated mates

Recently I had the rights to my paranormal romance series Shifting Magic returned to me. The series was my début work and originally published through Ellora's Cave. While I am grateful to them for the opportunity to publish my work, the books were originally intended to be a steamy romance series rather than 'erotic' so as time passed they were never a comfortable fit within the erotic romance market. This series is important to me both because they were my first works and because they represent a genre that I love.

Paranormal Romance.

Due in a large part to the well publicised problems of the last couple of years with my former publisher I had to put the Shifting Magic series aside. Happily that is no longer the case. My intention is to revise the series and re-publish the first three books before continuing forward with the long delayed fourth book. Below I am thrilled to share the beautiful new covers by Ally Karam for the first three books as well as the blurb and cover for book four, Familiar Magic. I know a few of you have been very patiently waiting for this book and I want to thank you for your patience and the occasional messages and emails asking for updates. They kept the book alive for me. Watch this space and my facebook and twitter for announcements of release dates when I have them.

To make sure magic isn’t the end of them both… and to guard his heart from the one woman who could take it from him.
