June Update

This has been a strange year so far. The entire world is in upheaval. Like all of you, I’ve been adjusting to the new reality.

Many people have used the time spent self-isolating at home to get into shape, learn a new language, take up a hobby. If you can manage to do that, my hat goes off to you. It’s impressive.

Of course, many people have worked through the pandemic, which adds stress to their home and personal lives. They put their lives on the line so we can be safe and have the supplies we need to survive. Your courage and bravery are deeply appreciated.

Me? I’m just trying to get by the best I can.

I work from home, so I’ve been trying to work. Not always easy. Some writers have lost themselves in their stories and are producing at a fast rate. It’s been the opposite for me. I’ve pushed to write anything. The events of the outside world are pushing down hard. I’m hopeful the longer days of summer and warmer weather will help.

I talk to family daily, which has helped keep me sane. And I’ve recently spent time with them in person (while taking precautions) for the first time in months. I’m healthy, but all my family falls into high-risk categories, so we’ve been being super careful.

I’ve watched movies and television, mostly in the evenings, but my go-to is always reading. I’ve been re-reading a lot lately. I call them comfort reads, or comfort books. I know the story, so I know what I’m getting.

I have read plenty of new books by authors I love and am grateful for them.

If you’re looking for something to read, check out my Forgotten Brotherhood series.

Arctic Bite
Forgotten Brotherhood, Book Two

Being immortal doesn’t mean you can’t die. It just means you’re damn hard to kill.

When Alexei Medvedev joined the Forgotten Brotherhood—paranormals hired to assassinate other paranormals—he knew it wouldn’t be a cake walk. But his next target is one of Death’s own Reapers gone rogue. For the first time since he started this gig, “damn hard to kill” feels more like “damn near impossible.”

Tracking Cassie Dobbs brings him to a remote bar in small-town Alaska, where this hot-as-hell Reaper is casually serving drinks, as if she doesn’t have a bounty on her head from Death himself. Alexei is dangerously intrigued. Everyone in the Brotherhood knows the first rule: don’t fall for your target.

But Alexei soon has bigger problems to face than an unexpected attraction. They only send assassins after those who deserve to die…or so he’s been made to believe. Now that he’s met Cassie, though, he’s not so sure.

What if everything he’s been told is a lie, and the person he’s been sent to kill is the only one who knows the truth?

@CeliaBreslin's Sweet Treats & #Vampires for New Year's Eve

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Wow, it's almost 2020...! I'm here today with a sweet treats recipe I post yearly around this time. Make a platter of these goodies for your New Year's celebration. You'll love them! I've tossed in some holiday paranormal viewing recommendations, too. Vampires, of course. Enjoy!

Celia’s Holiday Caramel Candy

Recipe compliments of my grandmother.

1 can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk
2 cups white sugar
2 cups white Karo Syrup
1 stick of butter (1/4 lb.)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Mix together the first three ingredients (milk, sugar, syrup) in a large bowl.
2. Melt the butter in a large heavy kettle, pour in the mixture and bring to a boil.
3. Stir continuously while mixture boils until it reaches the temperature of 245 degrees Fahrenheit on a candy thermometer (can take up to 25 minutes).

Note: If mixture overcooks, candy gets too hard.

Once the 245-degree temperature is reached, remove kettle from stove. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, then pour mixture onto a large buttered cookie sheet or flat pan.

Allow to cool.

Cut into pieces, wrap with plastic wrap or your candy covering of choice (or eat All The Candy, LOL).

Steamy #Romance Reads & #Haven Excerpt

Origins by Celia Breslin book cover

Hi Everyone!

Hope you all had a fabulous April. Mine was, sadly, dominated by a wicked, tenacious chest cold. Three weeks, ack!

APRIL ROMANCE READS

While I was laid up with the Virus From Hell, I managed to read a megaton of romance and also edit the third novel for my Tranquilli Bloodline vampire lovebirds, Carina and Alexander (Origins).

Here are a few of my favorite books from this month of coughing, sniffling, wheezing, and sneezing...

Destiny by Celia Breslin book cover

  • Lotus Petals (#1, Blood and Fire series), by Brantwijn Serrah
  •
  • The Risk (#1, (Xtreme Heroes series), by Skye Jordan
  •
  • Hades, Base Instincts, and Z (3 books in the Demonica series), by Larissa Ione

ROMANCE SNIPPET

Here's a romantic moment from HAVEN featuring Carina, my feisty San Francisco club owner, and her love-interest, undead musician Alexander...

Haven by Celia Breslin book cover ... Outside, the misty air cooled my lungs, the marble bench froze my ass, and the concrete under my bare feet chilled them bone deep. All cleared my head and eased the vertigo. “What time is it?”

Alexander draped his black leather coat over my shoulders. “Around four.”

He helped me snake my arms into the coat’s too-long-for-me sleeves, his hands pale like moonlight against the inky darkness of his coat. Such large, competent hands, the fingers long and strong. Piano player fingers. A silver band graced his left index, an onyx triquetra adorning the middle. He fished my hand from the sleeve. When our palms touched, power pulsed, warm and comforting.

My eyes strayed to the bracelets on his wrist. One thin strap of black leather and a chunky, metal bracelet of I-shaped links. I traced the metal with my free hand. “Silver?”

“Never.” He pointed at the rings. “White gold.” And the bracelet. “Titanium.”

“Oh.” My fingers continued their dance over his accessories. Love touching him.

Wind gusted around the clinic, whipping locks of hair across my face. He brushed them away, tucking some behind my ear. I pressed my cheek against his palm and closed my eyes to savor the moment. “Feeling better?”

I blinked and gave him a wry grin. “A lot better since you interrupted my undead uncles getting me drunk on brandy.”

His lips quirked, fangs flashing.

My insides quivered. “Yeah, much better.” My fingertips stroked his handsome face.

His skin showed no signs of the wounds he’d received during the earlier fight. Impressive. He leaned into my touch. My eyes zeroed in on his oh-so kissable lips. He moved closer, closer still, pausing a hair’s breadth away. My pulse skyrocketed. My stomach performed endless somersaults while bits lower clenched in anticipation. Do it. Do it now.

Alexander let out a breath and kissed me. ...

Want to read more? Here's another excerpt: Alexander and Carina's First Meet -->

Have a great week, Dear Readers, and see you back here on May 30th!

Celia

What was I thinking

I'm always asked where my ideas come from, what I'm doing when I write, and do I have favorite books, or characters.  In the twelve years since I was first published I've written every kind of character from human vampire, ghost, shapeshifter, killer and so on. To pick one character is near to impossible for me. I do have specific parts of my books that are dear to me, that I had so much fun writing I feel a sense of loss when its over. And then there are the parts that make me laugh. Below is what was going on inside my mind while writing the scene between Dante and Jonah in Penetrating the Darkness.

I tend to write about some pretty dark stuff so I like to thread some comedy into the story to break things up. I’m a sarcastic person and I like to use that in my stories. When I wrote this scene, I decided that my characters, Jonah and Dante needed to have a discussion about the future. With the Darkness engulfing the city, everyone is starting to feel it. They miss the simple things in life like grass, flowers, life. Dante and Jonah were human before the Darkness fell and the vampires took over, so they’re still getting used to it. Jonah is a nerd, as Dante likes to refer to him. He’s brilliant and has created some fierce and helpful gadgets to help take out the vamps. In this scene, I showcase two of them.
Jonah and Dante couldn’t be more opposite. Dante is a Private Detective and used to seeing and dealing with some pretty tough stuff. Jonah is used to being behind a computer. I put these two together to learn from each other.

I like to write with music going. Dance music is usually the play list I choose because it pumps me up. I feel energized.  I usually don’t plot out how my story will go. I just let it flow. When I’m in the zone, I can write for hours. I remember this scene taking over. I don’t remember what song was playing, what was going on around me. I found myself in the dark, sitting on a car with two men who like to jab at each other and have fun while they wait for the vampires to find them. I was there, chuckling at their humor. It wasn’t just words I wrote, it was life taking place in front of me.

I hope when you read this you can picture yourself sitting on a car, in the darkness, waiting for the vampires to come and get you.

On a side note: All of the darkness covers were designed by me.

Penetrating the Darkness: Bk 6 in the Darkness series.

“What’s the first thing you’re going to do when the sun comes back?” Dante asked as he picked up a small rock and began tossing it in the air.
“Hide.”
“Seriously.”
“Seriously. I hear getting scorched by the sun hurts like hell. I have no desire to have that happen any time soon,” Jonah responded. He hadn’t been a vampire before the sun was blocked out and truthfully, it kind of scared him to think of life with the sun shining.
“Me either. Still…it would be nice to see the sun shine again.”
“Yeah. Green grass—hell green anything would be nice. All this brown is boring the hell out of me.” Jonah realized that if any vamps came out of the warehouse, or Chaos, for that matter, the two of them didn’t stand a chance.
“I would love to give Gyspy a bouquet of flowers.”
Jonah pulled the net out of the trunk. “Yeah, Raven would love that too.”
“If things go back to normal after this is all over, what are you going to do? Still gonna work with computers?”
“I’ve been considering contacting the military about my inventions. I think I could be of use to them.”
“That would be perfect for you. You’re really getting good at making devices to help us nab the bad guys.”
“It keeps me busy. What about you? Are you going to go back to detective work?”
“I was thinking of going back to being a cop. Pays better than my investigation agency. You think we’re ever going to get Chaos?”
“I try to stay positive.”
Dante sat on the hood of the car.  “I do too. Still….”
“Yeah. Here.”
He handed Dante the electro net, wrapped in a thin plastic and the trigger box.
“What is this for?”
“Protection. You up for taking on a bunch of vamps? Just the two of us?”
“This thing better not zap me again.”
“As long as you don’t switch the trigger on before you release it, you’ll be fine.” Jonah pulled the Flash device he’d made a few days ago, and slipped it into his pocket. It was the size of a small flashlight, but it packed a hell of a punch. One flash of it and it rendered the person blind for several moments. Just enough time to take them out.
“You better pray to God that it doesn’t. Can I still do that now that I’m a vamp? Pray to God?”
“Hell if I know.” He took a seat beside Dante on the hood. “What do you think about Felicity being back, and being a child instead of a baby?”
“It's weird. It was one thing to know Trinity was preggers, but a kid is different than a baby. I didn’t know vamps could have kids.”
“Basil said that only pure vamps can do it. I wonder if the kid has powers like Basil and Trinity?”
“That kinda scares me. Basil and Trinity are adults and can make the right judgement calls. A kid doesn’t always know that. She could go off with her powers if she’s pissed or upset or anything for that matter.”
“We have visitors.” Dante slid off the hood.
Jonah joined him and pulled out his light.
“How come I have to take the scary ass Electronet and you get a lame flashlight?”
“Just watch and learn young grasshopper.”
“Careful, my hand might slip on the trigger.” Dante aimed the Electronet  at Jonah.
“Don’t be a spoilsport.”
“I don’t know. It might feel satisfying to zap you for a change.”
Using the back of his hand, Jonah pushed the devise aside, aiming it forward. “You could, but, then you’d have no Electronet , and I’d be incapable of helping when those three vamps come at us ready for a fight.”
“Shit, you have a point.”
“That’s why I’m the smart one. Here, put these on.” Jonah handed Dante a pair of dark glasses that sat on the nose and covered the eyes.
“What the hell is this?”
“It's something to prevent you from going blind when I use my flashlight,” he added sarcastically.
“Don’t be a bitch.” With his finger on the trigger, Dante readied himself for the fight. “There are four of them. No way we can take all four. The net only holds two.”
“I said, watch and learn—”
“You say young grasshopper and I will walk to the car and get the hell out of here, leaving you to fight them off.”
“Pussy. Get the two on the right, I’ll get the other two.”
“Pussy. Who is carrying a lame flashlight.”
As the two marched toward Dante, he pressed the trigger and the net shot out like a bullet, covering the two vamps. They dropped to the ground, flopping about like fish out of water. Jonah never tired of seeing that. He flicked the switch to give it a charge, then pressed the button. Light shot out brighter than a flash of lightning, blinding the two vamps. They stumbled back, then dropped to the ground, wailing like babies that they were blind.
“Damn, dog. That is one kick ass flashlight.” He took the glasses off and set them on the hood.
“Did you just call me dog.” Jonah set his beside Dante’s.
“Sorry. Saw it on TV. I guess it stuck with me. I’ll deal with the whining babies.” Dante handed Jonah the Electronet  remote, then grabbed his blade from the car and stabbed them both in the heart. “Want me to take care of them too?”
“I’ve got it.” He took Dante’s knife and killed one vamp. “This one we take back to Basil and he can torture some answers out of him.”
“Good idea, dog.” Dante laughed as he headed to the remaining vamp. “I couldn’t resist. Is this turned off?” He pointed at the net.
“I don’t know. Why don’t you touch it and find out?”
“You’d like that. It's all yours.”
He so enjoyed his banter with Dante. He pressed the button and the wire attached to the net sucked back into the compartment, neatly bringing the net with it and sealing it in the remote. It was a pretty damn good device if he may say so himself.
Dante lifted the vamp and slung him over his shoulder. “Trunk.”
Jonah nodded. “Let’s hope the guy talks.

Initiation: The Warrior Series

I started reading the Warrior series by Rebecca Royce awhile ago. I didn't really read YA, but I love Rebecca's voice and writing style so I went for it. And I loved it!! It makes me very happy that the series is being re-released so everybody else can have a chance to read it. Look at that cover! It's amazing. And the story is action packed and has rich, deep characters I fell in love with.

Guest Diva Robyn Bachar Dishes about Bite Me

For those who don't know her, Robyn is a wonderfully talented author who I was honored to be in a critic group with. She is also the person who convinced me romance is the genre I needed to write. I'm so happy to welcome her here today so she can tell us all about herself, her writing, and her very yummy new book-Bite Me!

What is the Heat level of your books from 1 to YOWZA?

This one has an orgy in it, so I suppose it qualifies for YOWZA. Bite Me has a f/f/m ménage and some light kink. (The heroine’s inner lust demon, Mistress Elizabeth, has enough sex toys to start her own store.) ;-) Bite Me’s heat level is on par with my sci-fi ménage series, the Cy’ren Rising trilogy.

What are you writing right now? Is it part of a series?

I always have a few projects in the works. Right now I’m working on the next installment of my Bad Witch books. It’s a bit haunted house, a bit Beauty and the Beast, and very steamy. I also have a fantasy romance planned for later this year, and another Bad Witch book.

Any hobbies non-writing related (stalking male cover models on Facebook doesn’t count)?

Gaming. Right now I’m addicted to Dragon Age: Inquisition. That’s not surprising considering I was addicted to the first two games in the series—I’ve played Dragon Age Origins over 20 times, and every time I encounter new material. That game is so good. Plus BioWare includes romance options in their storylines, so you get to save the kingdom and get the guy.

JUST A DECADENT TASTE….
·
Last book you read?: Widdershins by Jordan L. Hawk, and now I want to read all of the books in that series. I loved it.
·
Cake or pie?: Cake, unless it’s a chocolate pie.
·
Stand alone or series?: Series. I’m very nosy, and I like to hear what happened to characters after the        first book ended.
·
          Novella or novel?: Novel.
·
Real or pen name?: I write under my real name. ;-)
·
Vanilla or ANY another flavor?: There’s a time and place for vanilla, and that is buttercream frosting.
·
Tattoo or piercing?: Tattoo, I have four of them.
·
Once Upon A Time or The End?: Once Upon a Time is so much easier to write than The End!

Bite Me Blurb

Consumed by the need to feed…

After an out-of-control spell triggers the zombie apocalypse, Lizzy Addams is left in the ruins of Chicago with only the slightly unhinged commentary—and endless erotic appetites—of her inner demon for company. Her blood supply dwindling, she is forced to find survivors to feed from, or die trying.

Officer Angela Kinney was on duty when hungry corpses overwhelmed the city. The survivors look to her for leadership, but nothing prepared her for a beautiful monster who offers safety in exchange for blood.

Sean MacMillan never expected to see Lizzy again after she rejected his attempts to lure her back to the vampire fold. But with his flock threatened by the horde and his murderous vampire brother, Lizzy is the only one he can trust to keep them safe.

The veil of secrecy shrouding the supernatural world torn apart, humanity’s only hope is to forge an alliance with vampires, werewolves, and things that go bump in the night. Though accepting their aid could be a devil’s bargain that puts humans at the bottom of the food chain.

Warning: Contains vampire orgies, angsty demon sex, a frisky lesbian werewolf, light kink, and enough sex toys to start a store.
