@CeliaBreslin's Sweet Treats & #Vampires for New Year's Eve

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Wow, it's almost 2020...! I'm here today with a sweet treats recipe I post yearly around this time. Make a platter of these goodies for your New Year's celebration. You'll love them! I've tossed in some holiday paranormal viewing recommendations, too. Vampires, of course. Enjoy!

Celia’s Holiday Caramel Candy

Recipe compliments of my grandmother.

1 can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk
2 cups white sugar
2 cups white Karo Syrup
1 stick of butter (1/4 lb.)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Mix together the first three ingredients (milk, sugar, syrup) in a large bowl.
2. Melt the butter in a large heavy kettle, pour in the mixture and bring to a boil.
3. Stir continuously while mixture boils until it reaches the temperature of 245 degrees Fahrenheit on a candy thermometer (can take up to 25 minutes).

Note: If mixture overcooks, candy gets too hard.

Once the 245-degree temperature is reached, remove kettle from stove. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, then pour mixture onto a large buttered cookie sheet or flat pan.

Allow to cool.

Cut into pieces, wrap with plastic wrap or your candy covering of choice (or eat All The Candy, LOL).

Celia’s Vampire Viewing Picks for the Holidays

It’s always time to watch vampire shows in my world. Here are my recs for some fun holiday viewing!

Spotlight on #ParanormalRomance: Georgia Lyn Hunter's BREAKING FATE

Hi Everyone!

Summer is almost here, hurray! My vacation time is coming soon, but at the moment I'm prepping ORIGINS, the third installment in the Tranquilli Vampire Series, for a late summer/early fall release. My publisher is giving the series a design makeover, too: new covers for HAVEN, DESTINY, and ORIGINS, woot! Stay tuned for a sneak peek later this summer. Meanwhile, if you'd like to read an exciting paranormal romance series featuring sexy alpha warriors and kickass women, check out my author-pal Georgia Lyn Hunter's FALLEN GUARDIANS series. A while back I posted the scoop on the first book in the series, ABSOLUTE SURRENDER, so here's a look at the second book, BREAKING FATE.

Breaking Fate book cover, by Georgia Lyn Hunter

Title: Breaking Fate (#2)
Author: Georgia Lyn Hunter
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series: Fallen Guardians
Release Date: September 2015
Formats: e-book, print, audio

Available at:
Amazon | B&N | iBooks | Kobo | Audible

An immortal without a soul is bad enough. But when his only tether to remaining honorable is his addiction to bone-crushing pain, it makes Blaéz a dangerously loose cannon.i>

A Guardian sworn to protect mortals from supernatural evil, Blaéz straddles the edge of darkness as his needs grow. When a good deed brings him to the doorstep of a female unlike any other, one whose touch ignites emotions long lost in the hellish pits of Tartarus, he’s determined not to lose her. She belongs to him. But she’s human. Forbidden. And bringing her into his life may just destroy them both.

Darci Callahan has given up on love. But when a lethally handsome stranger suddenly appears late one night, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the captivating man with the pale, empty eyes—a man who awakens in her a desire she never believed possible. Except Blaéz brings more than unexpected passion to her life, he brings danger.

In this treacherous new world of gods and demons, Darci soon discovers a heart-shattering truth and the twisted games the gods play. Caught in the crosshairs, she’s forced to accept that, sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, you have to love them enough to let them go…

EXCERPT

(PG) Excerpt: A scene between Michael, the Guardian’s leader, and Blaéz after he’d deliberately missed a meeting. (He went after the heroine)

Michael strode inside, circled the heavy equipment, and sat across from Blaéz on a workout bench. The old tee he wore looked like the moths had had a great time feasting on it. It didn't surprise Blaéz that the archangel was still here when he rarely stayed at the castle. It was expected after Blaéz had missed the “chat” last night.

Well, he’d been busy...stalking. He couldn’t make the meet.

Michael’s eerie blue eyes settled on him. They appeared like shattered sapphires, as if he’d lived through a brutal torture. The jagged pieces never quite fit anymore, allowing a strange silvery glow through.

“What’s going on?”

Time for his grilling. With no way to escape this one-on-one with the snarly male, Blaéz said, “You know what I am. Why the questions now?”

Michael picked up a three hundred pound weight and began his arm curls. “For centuries, every few months you disappear for days at a time. I gave you space, understood you needed it. But that time in Tartarus has long passed. You’re losing all your cognitive skills, ones that make you a Guardian. Sure, you do the job, but there’s a lack of care now.”

Blaéz heard the unasked question. Maybe he should have felt guilty that he cared so little about his own health, his life. After all, Michael had given up more than his status as the leader of the archangels, lost something irreplaceable to free him--free all of them from that hellish hole. And he’d chosen to stay on as their leader. Why anyone would want to take charge of moody, temperamental fallen ex-gods, Blaéz had no idea.

Still, he could never reveal the reality of what he’d done...still did, or where he disappeared to every few months. Days he could never speak off. The truth would crush the warriors.

He functioned on autopilot in his role as a Guardian. Nothing more than an automaton. It’s why meeting Darci, and the emotions that had unfurled so briefly, yanked him by the balls.

“You're becoming self-destructive,” Michael snapped.

He was way past self-destructive.

He reeked of Hell.

Couldn’t the Arc smell it on him?

Blaéz brushed the sweat from his brow and pounded harder on the fast moving belt. A slow burn started in his thigh muscles, followed by a trickle of pain. “It’s been three and a half millennia, you think I'm a loose cannon, then take me out.”

Celia's Spooky Picks: #Halloween in #SanFrancisco

pumpkin Happy Halloween Everyone!

My hometown is a beautiful combo of nature and architecture, has some of the nicest weather year round (including the awesome fog), excellent cuisine, abundant arts, and... for you lovers of the paranormal, there are a ton of spooky spots to explore, some of which make an appearance in my vampire series, The Tranquilli Bloodline.

Here are my top picks for chills and thrills in San Francisco...

Spooky Spots in #San Francisco

  1. The Armory
Located in the Mission District, this 200,000 square foot reproduction of a Moorish Castle was constructed in the early 1900s and used by the San Francisco National Guard. From 2006 until January 2018, it was owned by an adult entertainment company, and tours were available for all five floors of the historic building. My favorite floor by far is the wonderfully creepy basement: a vast, cavernous space with visible remnants of its days as an armory (indoor rifle range!). Water runs through wide cracks in the basement floor's exposed concrete, adding to the spooky vibe.
  2. sf armory, photo credit - Hoodline dot com news, february 2018

  3. Alcatraz Island
Also known as “The Rock,” Alcatraz sits in the San Francisco Bay, and is home to a large seabird population, the West Coast’s oldest functional lighthouse, and, of course, the infamous maximum, high-security prison, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. You can guess the spookiest part, right? They say ghost of ex-cons haunt the prison. Take a nighttime tour and let them shut you in one of the 9ft by 5ft cells...if you dare. ::shiver::
  4. Sutro Baths, Ocean Beach
Once upon a time (1896), this bathhouse was the world’s largest, indoor swimming facility. Located near Ocean Beach and below Cliff House, Sutro Baths burned to the ground in 1966 (arson). Today, you can hike around the ruins then venture into the spookiest spot of all: the cave. For the best spine tingling experience, try it at night, when the fog swirls and the wind whips and wails, and the waves crash over the beach. Some say if you light a candle and leave it in the tunnel, a ghost will pick it up and fling it into the ocean...
  5. Stow Lake, Golden Gate Park
Modeled after NYC’s Central Park, Golden Gate Park is a gorgeous expanse of greenery in San Francisco. Stow Lake (located west of the beautiful Japanese Tea Garden), is a great spot for picnics and a boat ride. If you venture there at night, beware of the lake’s resident ghost, the White Lady. Barefoot and dressed in a white dress, rumor has it she lost her baby in the lake then drowned herself (in the early 1900s). There’s also a statue near the lake of a woman and two small children. They say it moves when the White Lady is on the prowl.
  6. cemetery yard decorations

  7. Mission Dolores Cemetery
What’s spookier than a cemetery? Mission Dolores Cemetery is the oldest burial ground in San Francisco and the resting place of city founders, criminals, and thousands of First Californians (the Ohlone). It’s also one of the locations in Hitchcock’s 1958 classic film, “Vertigo.” You’ll find the cemetery next to the oldest building in San Francisco, Mission Dolores. Tour both, but don’t be surprised if the hairs on your nape stand at attention as you wander through the cemetery gardens, among the ancient tombstones and silent sentinel statues. Spooky energy, even on a sunny day...

Steamy #Romance Reads & #Haven Excerpt

Origins by Celia Breslin book cover

Hi Everyone!

Hope you all had a fabulous April. Mine was, sadly, dominated by a wicked, tenacious chest cold. Three weeks, ack!

APRIL ROMANCE READS

While I was laid up with the Virus From Hell, I managed to read a megaton of romance and also edit the third novel for my Tranquilli Bloodline vampire lovebirds, Carina and Alexander (Origins).

Here are a few of my favorite books from this month of coughing, sniffling, wheezing, and sneezing...

Destiny by Celia Breslin book cover

  • Lotus Petals (#1, Blood and Fire series), by Brantwijn Serrah
  •
  • The Risk (#1, (Xtreme Heroes series), by Skye Jordan
  •
  • Hades, Base Instincts, and Z (3 books in the Demonica series), by Larissa Ione

ROMANCE SNIPPET

Here's a romantic moment from HAVEN featuring Carina, my feisty San Francisco club owner, and her love-interest, undead musician Alexander...

Haven by Celia Breslin book cover ... Outside, the misty air cooled my lungs, the marble bench froze my ass, and the concrete under my bare feet chilled them bone deep. All cleared my head and eased the vertigo. “What time is it?”

Alexander draped his black leather coat over my shoulders. “Around four.”

He helped me snake my arms into the coat’s too-long-for-me sleeves, his hands pale like moonlight against the inky darkness of his coat. Such large, competent hands, the fingers long and strong. Piano player fingers. A silver band graced his left index, an onyx triquetra adorning the middle. He fished my hand from the sleeve. When our palms touched, power pulsed, warm and comforting.

My eyes strayed to the bracelets on his wrist. One thin strap of black leather and a chunky, metal bracelet of I-shaped links. I traced the metal with my free hand. “Silver?”

“Never.” He pointed at the rings. “White gold.” And the bracelet. “Titanium.”

“Oh.” My fingers continued their dance over his accessories. Love touching him.

Wind gusted around the clinic, whipping locks of hair across my face. He brushed them away, tucking some behind my ear. I pressed my cheek against his palm and closed my eyes to savor the moment. “Feeling better?”

I blinked and gave him a wry grin. “A lot better since you interrupted my undead uncles getting me drunk on brandy.”

His lips quirked, fangs flashing.

My insides quivered. “Yeah, much better.” My fingertips stroked his handsome face.

His skin showed no signs of the wounds he’d received during the earlier fight. Impressive. He leaned into my touch. My eyes zeroed in on his oh-so kissable lips. He moved closer, closer still, pausing a hair’s breadth away. My pulse skyrocketed. My stomach performed endless somersaults while bits lower clenched in anticipation. Do it. Do it now.

Alexander let out a breath and kissed me. ...

Have a great week, Dear Readers, and see you back here on May 30th!

SPRING TREATS & STEAMY READS

Hello Dear Readers,

Happy Spring! My last post here was in December, so I hope this March post finds you having a happy and healthy new year. As part of my New Year's resolutions, I embarked on a new workout program called #80DayObsession. I've always been a bit of a fitness enthusiast, and this new workout by Autumn Calabrese does not disappoint. It's a hardcore, total-body plan filled with fun cardio and core and strength-training. If you're looking for a challenge, check it out.

In addition to workout programs, Autumn also does a cooking show with her chef brother called #Fixate. Lots of healthy, fun recipes in there. I'm totally addicted to the Banana Apple muffins. Gluten-free, dairy-free and delicious!

Tasty Treat: Autumn Calabrese's Fixate Banana Apple Muffins

picture of celia's batch of muffins
  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed (approx 1 cup)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups almond flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • Dash of Himalayan salt
  • 3/4 medium apple chopped (approx. 1/2 cup)
  • 1 Tbsp organic grass fed butter, melted
- Preheat oven 350 degrees.
- Line pan with muffin papers, or spray muffin with oil.
- Combine eggs, banana, butter in a bowl and mix well.
- Combine almond flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl, mix well.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients together and mix until blended.
- Add chopped apple and mix.
- Divide batter evenly in muffin cups (makes nine (9) muffins).
- Bake 18-22 minutes or until golden brown (and toothpick test comes out clean).

Recipe source: - Autumn Calabrese's Fixate Cookbook & Cooking Show

Celia's Tips:
- Try adding a little cinnamon.
- Top your treat with 1 tsp of a nut butter as "icing" (peanut butter = yummy).

Steamy Reads

While you're enjoying your delicious homemade muffin (goes great with coffee!), dive into a steamy read. Here are my recs from my recent reads.
  • Azagoth, Reaver, and Revenant (3 books in the Demonica Series), by Larissa Ione
  • Shadow's Claim and Shadows Seduction (2 books in Immortals After Dark Series) by Kresley Cole
  • Mischief and the Masters (Masters of the Shadowlands Series) by Cherise Sinclair
