Happy Solstice!

Today is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. It's also known as Yule and is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. To ancient people, the seasons and the weather played an important part of their lives. To drive away the dark, they would light bonfires to light the longest night of the year. The tradition of the Yule log is actually a pagan one. As is the cutting of mistletoe.

Many cultures would celebrate with food, drink, music, and stories. From here on, the days would get longer until the arrival of spring. Definitely something to celebrate.

Wishing all of you a Happy Solstice, Merry Yule, Happy Holidays, and a very Merry Christmas!

Burning Ash

Forgotten Brotherhood, Book 3

No one is more surprised than Asher, one of the oldest vampires on Earth, that he's attracted to vamp hunter Jo Radcliffe. She's smart, a talented slayer, and she's gorgeous. Something about her pulls at him, like no one ever has before. For a man, whose name strikes fear in everyone––this is something new and intriguing. And quite possibly deadly, if she discovers his secret.

Jo has two things in common with the handsome Asher––they are both slayers and someone is messing with them in a very-much-trying-to-kill-them way. She's not so happy about joining forces with a dude she doesn't know. But he's sexy as hell and really good at his job as one of the Forgotten Brotherhood, whose business it is to execute misbehaving paranormals.

She knows she's bait in a larger plot to harm Asher and the Brotherhood. And there is nothing he won't do, no line he won't cross, to keep her safe––which may be the weakness that destroys them both.

TEASER:

“Vampire,” the melodic voice carried easily through the building. The hood of a long leather duster was shoved back to reveal a tall stunning woman with a deadly crossbow held easily in her hands.

Asher’s heart skipped a beat. Blood pounded through his veins, hot and thick. Confident and deadly was always a huge turn-on. This woman was both those things and more.

Celia's Edible and Audible Holiday Cheer

Hello my dear Decadent Diva Readers,

I hope you had a lovely November. The December holidays are upon us, and I'm busy prepping A Demon's Embrace, my second Cupid Dating Agency book for release! My hero, Stryker, owns a year-round holiday store, and he loves Christmas so thought I better launch his story around the time of his favorite holiday, LOL.

Now, let's get this holiday party started with songs and sugar! I shared these last year, but in case you missed them, here they are again: Cookies and musical holiday cheer...

Celia's Holiday Spritz Cookies “our

Cookies are one of my favorite, sweet indulgences for the holidays. My family makes spritz cookies every December. Delicious! Here’s my mother’s recipe (that I love to post every year around this time). Requires cookie press.

3/4 cup regular sugar (some recipes call for “powdered”, but mom swears by regular!)
1 cup margarine, or butter, or shortening (mom uses shortening; I use butter. Both are delish.)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
2. In a bowl, mix together margarine (or butter or shortening), sugar, vanilla, egg until fairly fluffy.
3. Stir in flour, salt, baking powder.
4. Optional: separate dough into bowls, add food dye of your choosing (see photo).
5. Fill cookie press; press dough onto ungreased cookie sheets.
6. Bake for 12 - 15 minutes.
7. Remove from sheet and cool on cookie rack.
8. Eat. All. The. Cookies!

New Release

Here's an excerpt from my latest release IVAR’S ESCAPE, book 2 of the Assassins of Gravas series. Hope you enjoy it!

If you’ve read the Marks Mercenaries series, you might remember that Vaden el Gravaso, the hero from Salvaging Abby is from Gravas, a highly secretive world with advanced technology and a kickass military. Oh, and their assassins are the best in the known universe. They’re also all male. This time it’s impossible for a Gravasian assassin to infiltrate and rescue Ivar, a prince of Gravas. When a man can’t do the job, they send a woman who can.

Sometimes the best man for the job is a woman.

Ivar’s Escape

Assassins of Gravas, Book 2

Ivar el Gravaso—a prince of Gravas—wakes in a prison cell with no idea how he got there or even who he is. If his captor can’t get answers from Ivar, his days are numbered. When a strange woman sneaks into the prison and promises to get him out, he’s suspicious. Is this nothing more than another trick by his captor or is she truly there to help?

Delphi is an assassin sent by the Gravasian government to infiltrate the space pirate stronghold of Tortuga in search of the missing prince. She finds a prisoner who is well-spoken, knowledgeable, and ready to fight, even though he has no idea who he is. He might be her target. It’s difficult to tell due to his ragged appearance. But no way can she leave him behind, no matter who he is.

TEASER:

The man wasn’t moving.

Delphi glanced at the door at the far end of the corridor. It was solid wood. She should be safe enough. Taking a risk, she eased a candle stub and matches from her pants pocket. Primitive but effective.

She struck the match and touched the flame to the wick.

He exploded from the pallet and lunged. She scrambled away, her back hitting the cell door behind her. Shit, he was fast. If it hadn’t been for her training, he’d have his hands around her neck right now.

Miraculously, the light hadn’t gone out. The candle was on its side. The large male grabbed it and pulled it inside, giving her a good look at him.

His hair was long and dark and matted. An unkempt beard covered the lower half of his face. His clothes were in tatters, his feet bare. His eyes were golden brown, like a coywolf she’d seen a picture of once, and just as feral. A barely healed scar ran down the left side of his face, starting at his temple and disappearing into his beard.

She held up her hands to show him she was unarmed. “I’m not here to hurt you.” It was only dumb luck that she hadn’t rattled the steel doors when she’d hit them and possibly woken the guard. He’d been drinking, but it might not be enough for him to pass out.

Still in a crouch, the prisoner studied her. He’d see the image she wanted to project—a teenage boy with a pockmarked face. Disguises were part of an assassin’s bag of tricks, and this was her specialty.

“What’s your name?” Given his appearance, it was hard to tell if it was her target. He’d lost weight and was totally disheveled and dirty. It was doubtful his own mother would recognize him in a fully lit room, let alone by dim candlelight.

He swallowed heavily, his throat rippling. His fingers tightened around the stub of candle. He opened his mouth, closed it, and tried again. “I don’t know.” His breath hit the flame directly, blowing it out and plunging them into darkness.

Halloween is Almost Here!

It’s only a little over a week until Halloween. On Halloween night, I like to light the candle in the pumpkin, turn off the lights, and put on my favorite Halloween movies.

There are tons of great ones out there to choose from, but here are 5 of my favorites:

1. The Crow (1994)—One of my favorite movies of all time and probably the one I’ve watched the most. It’s so dark, yet so hopeful. Brandon Lee’s performance is incredible. Great cast and story, plenty of action, and one fantastic soundtrack.

2. Underworld (2003)—Vampires and lycans are at war. Selene, a vampire warrior, makes the mistake of falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.

3. Dracula Untold (2014)—A fresh look at the traditional Dracula story. I love this movie. I mean, what’s not to love about Luke Evans as Vlad Tepes, the prince who must become a monster feared by his own people in order to obtain the power needed to protect them.

4. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)—As promised, this movie closely follows Stoker’s version of Dracula. Great film. Gary Oldman plays a scary and seductive Dracula.

5. Lost Boys (1987)—It’s hard to believe this movie is 30 years old, but it holds up. It’s one of my favorite vampire movies of all time. And the soundtrack is amazing.

I know this is a top 5 list, but I have to mention Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp (1999) and the Disney animated version (1949). I love them both. The animated story is beautifully crafted. And while the Depp version of the story goes off the rails near the end, I still enjoy it. And, of course, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” is a show I have to watch every year.

However you chose to celebrate, I hope you have a Spooktacular holiday! And if you’re looking for a sexy vampire book to read, you might want to check out Burning Ash, the latest release in my Forgotten Brotherhood series.

Happy Halloween!

She knows she's bait in a larger plot to harm Asher and the Brotherhood. And there is nothing he won't do, no line he won't cross, to keep her safe––which may be the weakness that destroys them both.

TEASER:

He sauntered out of the dark and fully into the candlelight. The flames flickered over his face, exposing a strong jaw, straight nose, and high forehead. His blond hair was pulled back in a short tail at his nape. His skin was olive-toned or tanned, hard to say. Piercing brown eyes stared at her.

Good looking was much to tame. Handsome didn’t fit either. There was something dangerous and predatory lurking beneath the surface. Primal. Compelling. Yeah, that was it.

It was time for her to leave.

BURNING ASH is available today!

I’m so excited about the release of BURNING ASH, the next book in the Forgotten Brotherhood series, available today!

Asher is an ancient vampire who is hooked on reality television. He’s irreverent at times and likes to tease, but that hides a lot of pain. He’s more special than Jo Radcliffe, vampire hunter, realizes. Deadly games have consequences, and someone is playing games with them both. They must work together to hunt down who is behind it all. The more time they spend together, the closer they become. Jo gets pulled deeper and deeper into Asher’s world, but will their relationship survive when Jo discovers the truth?

TEASER:

“How did you become a hunter?”

He tried to figure out the best way to put it and still be honest. “I was born into it, I guess you could say.”

“That’s tough.” She set her cup down and wrapped her fingers around it.

“How about you?” Most fell into it after something very bad usually happened to them or someone they loved.

“When I was a teenager, I discovered there were monsters in the world.”
He wanted to know every detail but pushing would only make her shut down. “Why didn’t you walk away? You could have had a normal life.” It’s what most did. They buried their horror-filled memories and tried to forget.

The other path, the one less taken, was dark. And once you started down it, there was no way back.

“Someone has to kill them.” Such a simple answer, yet it said everything he needed to know about her.

Excerpt

“Think he’s dead?” [...]

Nice voice. Soft and smooth, like velvet. Feminine. Clearly, he wasn’t alone.

“He sure looks dead.” A second woman replied, louder and with a chuckle. He suppressed a scowl and kept his eyes closed. She thinks this is funny? Bodies shifted behind whatever his head had cracked into, edging closer to either side of him.

“There’s no blood, though,” she of the velvet voice murmured. “Shouldn’t there be blood? [...]”

She came to a halt near his head, her body heat and peaches-and-honey scent saturating his senses. He should open his peepers and say something, see if the female looked as good as she sounded and smelled. Shit. Where had that reaction come from? He had no room in his life for a woman, especially not a mortal woman.

“Maybe we should check for a pulse,” [...]

“I’m not touching his body.”

Fast reply [...]. Jesus, did he look so horrible? And double Jesus, why did her opinion matter? He must have hit his head harder than he imagined.

“C’mon, girlfriend. It’s a big, beautiful body. How can you not want to get your hands on it?”

Listen to your girlfriend, Peaches. ...

Have a great September, Dear Readers, and I'll see you back here on September 30th with more book fun. :-)

Celia

The Next Forgotten Brotherhood Book!

Who are the Forgotten Brotherhood? They’re a group of paranormal assassins, the misfits that other paranormal creatures fear. They aren’t the monsters lurking under the bed. They’re the ones that kill them.

They live by a strict code: Kill only those that truly deserve it and let their gods sort them out. Kill them before they kill you. Never, ever betray a fellow assassin.

BURNING ASH, book three of the series, is up for pre-order now!

Burning Ash Forgotten Brotherhood, Book 3

TEASER:

“Who the hell are you?” she demanded of the tall, lean man who was still mostly in the shadows. Whoever he was, he was dangerous, maybe even more so than the creature she’d just beheaded. He’d come out of nowhere and snatched the crossbow bolt out of the air like it hadn’t even been moving.

A shiver raced down her spine.

Dressed all in black, he blended with the dark. She hadn’t known he was there until he’d deliberately come forward. And she always had total situational awareness. It was a matter of survival.

Her profession had a very high mortality rate.

A nudge of his foot sent the vampire’s head rolling back toward the body. The undead would need to be burned if he didn’t start disintegrating soon, but she was keeping her distance from the man in black.

“Asher.” He gave her a half bow. “And you are?”

A quick shake of her head. “You don’t need to know.”

“That hardly seems fair considering I saved your life.”

“It didn’t need saving,” she asserted. “I’d already moved.”

“True,” Asher conceded. “You’re fast, but I didn’t know that. I should get points for the attempt.” He sauntered out of the dark and fully into the candlelight.

“While I appreciate the assist, I’ve got this.” She jerked her head toward the door, hoping he’d take the hint.

A ghost of a smile flickered on his full lips before it disappeared. “I’ve got nowhere I need to be.”

“Great,” she muttered.

His laugh slid down her spine, a whisper of heat. Her nipples puckered and rubbed against her bra. Uh. No. The last thing she needed was some kind of fatal attraction. Because he was one of two things—a fellow hunter or another vampire. Neither of which were good for her.

“Come now, I’ll help you clean up this mess. Then we can get a cup of coffee somewhere, maybe talk.”

“It’s almost one in the morning. Nothing around here is open.” God, she was tired. She just wanted to fry this vampire and leave. Usually they disintegrated fairly quickly. This one was taking his sweet time. He either wasn’t truly dead yet or he was very young. The older they were, the quicker they turned to ash.

Ash.

“Your name is Asher?”

He inclined his head. “At your service.”

Oh, and their assassins are the best in the known universe. Spear el Gravaso is Vaden’s older brother. This prince of Gravas is also one of their elite assassins. But he might have just met his match with Sass.

Spear’s Search
Assassins of Gravas, Book 1

Spear el Gravaso—prince of Gravas and assassin—is on a mission to find his brother. His hunt had led him to an auction of Gravasian weapons that can only belong to the missing man. He needs to secure the items, get any information he can, and kill all those involved. Nothing and no one will stop him.

Sass was taken from a harsh life on the streets as a child and trained to be an assassin by the powerful Artemis. The lives of those she loves is on the line if she fails her mission—to win the auction of Gravasian tech. Only one problem—Spear is in her way.

Their battle escalates, as does the explosive heat between them. When it comes down to it, they can fight each other and one of them will die or they can join forces. But can they trust each other?

TEASER:

He’s going to kill me.

Not this exact moment, but eventually.

There was nothing hiding him—no disguise, no mask. She knew what he really looked like.

And holy Vusarian cave snake! The man was a work of art.

Breathe, Sass. Just breathe.

There wasn’t an inch of fat on the man. His shoulders and arms were massive, his pectoral muscles perfectly defined, and his abs ripples of strength. His skin was slightly darker than hers, not hard considering she was pretty pale.

Those amazing eyes of his never stopped assessing, trying to figure a way to turn the situation to his advantage. He wasn’t just gorgeous but intelligent and skilled.

Yup, he’s definitely going to kill me.

There was no other explanation for him allowing her to see him in all his primal glory. Not when he took such pains to hide his identity.

Lies. Murder. Vengeance.

For centuries, humans descended on shifters' lands, killing and claiming. They devoured all in their path--gold, God, and glory their battle cries. From the flames of destruction on the Zafeo continent, two nations emerged--the human territory of Vumaris and the feline nation of Shona.

No more wars.

No more bloodshed.

Eight decades of peace.

For eighteen-year-old Asha, traveling to Vumaris with her parents, lion alphas of the Kingdom of Shona, should've been a simple matter. Recommitting to an eighty-year-old peace treaty between their countries should've been easier still. Yet, greed and corruption know no boundaries of time and place. So when a group of mercenaries converges on Sanctum Hotel, hellbent on kidnapping Asha and assassinating her parents, her family trip turns into the bloodiest night of her life.

Will Asha lose those closest to her heart--her parents and Ekon, a young bodyguard she loves. If so, will she forgive her enemies or seek divine retribution?

Only time will tell, and it's running out for Princess Asha of the Kingdom of Shona.

Asha flipped from one television station to the next, her mind more on the way Ekon had made her body feel than on finding a show for them to watch before Mafdet took over the post and sent Ekon to his suite. While Zarina had raised Asha to speak her mind, she had also taught her to do so with forethought and care. Zarina may have a tendency to shock people, but it wasn’t because she hadn’t calculated the impact of her words before uttering them. But her mother had yet to teach her how to curb her thoughts when her body wanted to do the talking for her.

Foregoing the television, she clicked it off and dropped the remote control onto the couch cushion beside her. She ached in places she wanted Ekon to touch. If she were alone in the suite and in her bed, she’d close her eyes, slip her hand inside her panties and—

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Opening eyes that had closed of their own volition and dropping the hem of her dress she hadn’t consciously lifted, Asha sat up—embarrassed and breathless.

The knock came again.

Asha stood. Waited. A Shieldmane would announce himself, even Mafdet who had a key to the suite. Her parents would call, if they required something of her, expecting Asha to come to them, not the other way around.

By the time the third round of knocking sounded, Asha had moved closer to the door, scenting more than the human on the other side.

“Miss. Miss. Are you inside? We have an emergency. We need to evacuate this floor.” The man knocked again--hard and urgent.

Peering through the peephole, she saw a tall man dressed in the same uniform she’d seen the front desk workers wear. He appeared both anxious and impatient. If there was a fire or gas leak, the man’s emotions were justified. Asha and Ekon needed to get out of there.

She unlocked and opened the door. Mistake. Asha stepped backward, and the human stepped forward, shutting the door behind him.

A gun she hadn’t seen through the peephole pointed at her.

“Don’t scream. Don’t fight. If you follow my directions, you won’t get hurt.”

If he didn’t have a gun leveled at her stomach, Asha could’ve misinterpreted his smile as a sign of kindness.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“No, I’m making the world better for humans.” Gun hand steady, the man who clearly wasn’t a hotel employee, scanned the outer room of the suite. “Is someone in here with you? A guard?” Green eyes tracked up and down her body. “Yeah, as pretty as you are, there has to be a guard nearby. Where? Bedroom? Bathroom?”

Asha wouldn’t tell a lie, only to be caught in one, but she also wouldn’t reward the human’s threat of violence with the truth.

“Fine. I’ll take your silence as a yes.” He drew closer, blond hair pulled back in a shoulder-length ponytail Asha would rip from his scalp if given an opportunity to strike. “We’ll just wait right here for whoever is in that other room to come out.”

They waited. It didn’t take long since Ekon had already been in the ensuite for five minutes. Asha knew why he’d made a quick escape. She hadn’t been toying with him when she’d asked to see him naked. She’d very much wanted to feast upon his body … and with more than her eyes.

The door to the ensuite creaked open.

The human shoved the barrel of the gun against her ribs, his breath smelling of cigarettes when he whispered in her ear. “I knew someone was in here with you. You’re too important to be left alone. But didn’t your parents ever warn you about opening doors to strangers?” His other hand found one of Asha’s curls and twisted it around his finger. “I told them I could get you to open the door for me. It was the uniform, wasn’t it? No need to answer, little girl. Now, let’s see who came to play.”

Ekon appeared in the living room, having reached them on soundless feet. If not for the creaking door, the human would’ve never known he approached. As it was, though, it was Ekon who was taken by surprise.

Asha saw the moment her gentle boyfriend morphed into her deadly Shieldmane. His eyes darkened, eye teeth lengthened, sharpened, and his fingernails transformed into long, curved claws.

Ekon stalked toward Asha, his focus on the gunman.

In a swift upward movement, the human pointed his handgun at Asha’s head. “Calm down, kitty, or I’ll splatter her brains all over this white carpet.”

Ekon halted.

“That’s good. Real good. Put those fangs and claws away, friend.”

“I’m not your friend. If you want to make it out of this room alive, you need to get that gun away from her and leave.”

“Yeah, no, that’s not going to happen. She’s why we’re here. Where we go, she goes. You’re the one I don’t need.”

A lion roared, and Asha had never heard a more beautiful sound.

“That would be my father.”

The roar was followed by gunfire, then what sounded like all-out war in the hall.

“Fuck! Fuck! What in the hell are those guys doing?”

“They’re fighting my parents, which means they’re dying. If you give Ekon your gun, you won’t have to die with them.”

June Update

This has been a strange year so far. The entire world is in upheaval. Like all of you, I’ve been adjusting to the new reality.

Many people have used the time spent self-isolating at home to get into shape, learn a new language, take up a hobby. If you can manage to do that, my hat goes off to you. It’s impressive.

Of course, many people have worked through the pandemic, which adds stress to their home and personal lives. They put their lives on the line so we can be safe and have the supplies we need to survive. Your courage and bravery are deeply appreciated.

Me? I’m just trying to get by the best I can.

I work from home, so I’ve been trying to work. Not always easy. Some writers have lost themselves in their stories and are producing at a fast rate. It’s been the opposite for me. I’ve pushed to write anything. The events of the outside world are pushing down hard. I’m hopeful the longer days of summer and warmer weather will help.

I talk to family daily, which has helped keep me sane. And I’ve recently spent time with them in person (while taking precautions) for the first time in months. I’m healthy, but all my family falls into high-risk categories, so we’ve been being super careful.

I’ve watched movies and television, mostly in the evenings, but my go-to is always reading. I’ve been re-reading a lot lately. I call them comfort reads, or comfort books. I know the story, so I know what I’m getting.

I have read plenty of new books by authors I love and am grateful for them.

If you’re looking for something to read, check out my Forgotten Brotherhood series.

Arctic Bite
Forgotten Brotherhood, Book Two

Being immortal doesn’t mean you can’t die. It just means you’re damn hard to kill.

When Alexei Medvedev joined the Forgotten Brotherhood—paranormals hired to assassinate other paranormals—he knew it wouldn’t be a cake walk. But his next target is one of Death’s own Reapers gone rogue. For the first time since he started this gig, “damn hard to kill” feels more like “damn near impossible.”

Tracking Cassie Dobbs brings him to a remote bar in small-town Alaska, where this hot-as-hell Reaper is casually serving drinks, as if she doesn’t have a bounty on her head from Death himself. Alexei is dangerously intrigued. Everyone in the Brotherhood knows the first rule: don’t fall for your target.

But Alexei soon has bigger problems to face than an unexpected attraction. They only send assassins after those who deserve to die…or so he’s been made to believe. Now that he’s met Cassie, though, he’s not so sure.

What if everything he’s been told is a lie, and the person he’s been sent to kill is the only one who knows the truth?
