Delve into Space

If you love sexy space mercenaries, you’ll love the Marks family.

Rescuing Rory

Marks Mercenaries, Book 1

Betrayed and sold into slavery after her father's death, Rory Banks finds herself dancing on the Exos, a deep-space pleasure ship. So when a stranger breaks open her cage and offers her a way out, she grabs it and runs.

Kal Marks and his brothers are space mercenaries and traders who have spent the past ten years searching for their younger sister. Their hunt has led them to the Exos and to Rory, who they hope will have information.  But Kal never counted on wanting Rory or on the sexual tension and scorching heat that blazes between them. This mission just got a lot more complicated.

TEASER:

Aurora Banks had seen just about everything in her twenty-two years of living, and most of it wasn’t pretty. But this was the last thing she’d expected to happen when she was shoved into the dancing cage a few hours ago.

The man standing before her with his hand out was tall and broad and downright intimidating. His eyes were a piercing green, and his silky black hair fell around his shoulders. A thick scar ran from just below his eye by his nose all the way out to his ear.

If she were totally honest, he was handsome in a rough-looking way. Not that it mattered. He was a way out of this nightmare. Rory only hoped she wasn’t jumping from one bad situation to an even worse one.

Trusting her instincts, she reached out and took his hand. It was warm and strong as it closed around hers and pulled her to the edge of the cage. He lifted her down from her gilded prison, wrapped one strong arm around her, and hustled her toward the wide red door that blocked their path to freedom.

“The guards.” She had to yell to be heard above the din of the yelling and fighting. They called themselves bouncers, but they were here to do more than keep the peace. Their main job was to make sure they didn’t lose any of the merchandise or the money. And all the women on board were considered prime merchandise.

“You let me worry about them.” Her liberator reached inside his shirt and drew out a compact-sized blaster.

Something crashed behind her, and she automatically began to look toward it. He caught her chin and turned her face away. “Look forward, not back.”

That was good advice. She ignored the noise and the fighting and hurried to keep up.

New Release--Zaxe's Rule

If you’ve read the Marks Mercenaries series, you might remember that Vaden el Gravaso, the hero from Salvaging Abby is from Gravas, a highly secretive world with advanced technology and a kickass military. Oh, and their assassins are the best in the known universe. Zaxe might not be from Gravas, but he’s on a mission for their king.

Zaxe’s Rule
Assassins of Gravas, Book 4

A professional assassin, Zaxe’s job is to kill his target—Helldrick—and get out. This final mission will repay his debt to the king of Gravas and allow him to finally claim his freedom. The job should be simple, but then he crosses paths with Jamaeh Jerman, the daughter of his target.

Being a mixed-race bastard, Jamaeh’s life has never been easy, but she’s carved out a living as a trader. Her entire life, she’s protected her brother. Now he’s missing and Helldrick is to blame. Her goal is to find her brother and bring him home.

She and Zaxe join forces, each with their own agenda. Danger and secrets from the past threaten to come between them, while their sizzling attraction further complicates the situation. Will mistrust drive them apart or will love save them both?

TEASER:

Her vantage point gave her the perfect view. The area was small and comfortable, but the stranger dominated it simply by his presence.

His hood was down, displaying a thick crop of black silky hair. Even though it was cut short, there was still a hint of a wave in it. His sunshades were tucked into the neck of his shirt, allowing her to get her first good look at every inch of his face. And what a face it was. Strong was the word that came to mind. His chin was square, cheekbones heavy slashes, forehead high and wide. It gave him an almost austere appearance, as though life had honed him to a very sharp edge.

Sitting cross-legged on one of the oversize pillows the locals used as seats, he appeared quite at home. The pottery teacup looked tiny and fragile in his big hand. Though at rest, he reminded her of a wild cat, every muscle coiled and ready to spring at any given moment.

He wasn’t handsome, in the traditional sense, but he was compelling. Wild and strong and dangerous.

KYLER'S JUSTICE is here!

If you’ve read the Marks Mercenaries series, you might remember that the hero from Salvaging Abby is from Gravas, a highly secretive world with advanced technology and a kickass military. Oh, and their assassins are the best in the known universe.

Gravasian assassins are ghosts, whispers on the wind, and feared by all. Kyler el Darkos is even deadlier, more dangerous. He’s no ordinary assassin. He’s the king’s blade, answering only to the king of Gravas, his loyalty absolute. Few know of his existence. He lives and works alone. Gravasian justice is swift and brutal. His job is to see it carried out.

Kyler’s Justice, Assassins of Gravas, book 3

Kyler el Darkos is an elite Gravasian assassin who answers only to the king of Gravas. His mission: Find Balthazar and eliminate him and any of his associates for their part in abducting the king’s son and trying to market stolen Gravasian weapons. His search has brought him to the planet of Mortis and Hell’s Gate, a bar owned by Balthazar’s father. The last thing he expects is to fall for Etta Mortis—his target’s sister—a woman who tempts him to risk his honor for a chance at love.

TEASER:

“Kyler. My name is Kyler el Darkos.” He never told anyone his birth name. It was information that could be used against him. But he needed to hear her say it. He was a ghost, sliding through the various worlds he visited, unseen and unacknowledged, living in the darkness alone. Only she could make him real, more than a shadowy killer.

“Kyler el Darkos.”

Everything inside him stilled before roaring to life. The world snapped into focus, no longer shadows and gray, but light and filled with color. It was as though he’d spent his entire life searching for this particular moment.

New Release

Here's an excerpt from my latest release IVAR’S ESCAPE, book 2 of the Assassins of Gravas series. Hope you enjoy it!

If you’ve read the Marks Mercenaries series, you might remember that Vaden el Gravaso, the hero from Salvaging Abby is from Gravas, a highly secretive world with advanced technology and a kickass military. Oh, and their assassins are the best in the known universe. They’re also all male. This time it’s impossible for a Gravasian assassin to infiltrate and rescue Ivar, a prince of Gravas. When a man can’t do the job, they send a woman who can.

Sometimes the best man for the job is a woman.

Ivar’s Escape

Assassins of Gravas, Book 2

Ivar el Gravaso—a prince of Gravas—wakes in a prison cell with no idea how he got there or even who he is. If his captor can’t get answers from Ivar, his days are numbered. When a strange woman sneaks into the prison and promises to get him out, he’s suspicious. Is this nothing more than another trick by his captor or is she truly there to help?

Delphi is an assassin sent by the Gravasian government to infiltrate the space pirate stronghold of Tortuga in search of the missing prince. She finds a prisoner who is well-spoken, knowledgeable, and ready to fight, even though he has no idea who he is. He might be her target. It’s difficult to tell due to his ragged appearance. But no way can she leave him behind, no matter who he is.

TEASER:

The man wasn’t moving.

Delphi glanced at the door at the far end of the corridor. It was solid wood. She should be safe enough. Taking a risk, she eased a candle stub and matches from her pants pocket. Primitive but effective.

She struck the match and touched the flame to the wick.

He exploded from the pallet and lunged. She scrambled away, her back hitting the cell door behind her. Shit, he was fast. If it hadn’t been for her training, he’d have his hands around her neck right now.

Miraculously, the light hadn’t gone out. The candle was on its side. The large male grabbed it and pulled it inside, giving her a good look at him.

His hair was long and dark and matted. An unkempt beard covered the lower half of his face. His clothes were in tatters, his feet bare. His eyes were golden brown, like a coywolf she’d seen a picture of once, and just as feral. A barely healed scar ran down the left side of his face, starting at his temple and disappearing into his beard.

She held up her hands to show him she was unarmed. “I’m not here to hurt you.” It was only dumb luck that she hadn’t rattled the steel doors when she’d hit them and possibly woken the guard. He’d been drinking, but it might not be enough for him to pass out.

Still in a crouch, the prisoner studied her. He’d see the image she wanted to project—a teenage boy with a pockmarked face. Disguises were part of an assassin’s bag of tricks, and this was her specialty.

“What’s your name?” Given his appearance, it was hard to tell if it was her target. He’d lost weight and was totally disheveled and dirty. It was doubtful his own mother would recognize him in a fully lit room, let alone by dim candlelight.

He swallowed heavily, his throat rippling. His fingers tightened around the stub of candle. He opened his mouth, closed it, and tried again. “I don’t know.” His breath hit the flame directly, blowing it out and plunging them into darkness.

Summer Movies and more...

The weather has not been good where I live this summer. It’s been cool with a lot of foggy and damp days. I’ve still managed to find pockets of time to get out and enjoy the sunshine when it does show.

And when it’s rainy, I enjoy the movies. I’ve seen some great ones this summer. Here are a few of them:

1. The Lion King—Amazing remake.

2. Hobbs and Shaw—So much fun and action.

3. Yesterday—A quieter movie. Great music and an overall wonderful story.

4. Spiderman: Far From Home—It’s everything you want and expect from a Spiderman movie.

5. Aladdin—Even better than I anticipated. I loved it.

6. Rocketman—Biopic of Elton John. Unflinching and honest. And great music.

7. The Secret Life of Pets 2—A great family movie.

8. Shaft—Three generations of Shaft men. Definitely fun and filled with action.

If you love space mercenaries, you’ll love the Marks Mercenaries. These brothers are tough and focused. Their goal—finding their sister who was abducted years ago.

The first four books in the series have been released—Rescuing Rory, Unexpected Angel, Liberating Lacey, and Salvaging Abby.

Here’s a tease from Liberating Lacey, book 3.

Teaser:

“What happened this afternoon? Did security find you after?”

He was stunned by her genuine distress. No one, other than his brothers, had ever shown the tiniest bit of concern over his well-being. Because of his physical size and level-headedness, even his parents had stopped worrying about him by the time he was twelve, assuming he could take care of himself.

Letting his blaster hang by its shoulder strap, he cupped her face in his hands. “I’m fine.” He kept his voice low, barely a whisper. The last thing he wanted was to be discovered with Lacey. “You?”

She’d taken the bigger risk.

She shrugged. “They’re used to me being odd, so there was no problem.” There was an underlying thread of acceptance, as well as an echo of old hurt in her words.

He forced himself to ignore it. It was time to get down to business.
But he, the man who never lost focus during a mission, got distracted by a pair of seeking green eyes, a pert nose, and a set of lush lips.

Silently cursing himself a fool, he leaned down and pressed his mouth against hers. After this afternoon, he expected her to push him away, maybe even slap him. Hell, she could call for security if she wanted.

That cooled his ardor. But before he could pull back, Lacey went up on her toes and kissed him back. She was a space siren, an apparition brought on by too many months in deep space. If he weren’t careful, she’d lure him to his death.

But what a way to go.

Liberating Lacey
Marks Mercenaries, Book 3

Garth Marks and his brothers are space mercenaries and traders. Their life’s mission is to find their younger sister, who was kidnapped ten years before. Their search has led them to Eden, a planet that is home to a cult-like group.

Lacey Freshlan wants to get away from Eden, and the strangers who have come here might be her ticket out. Garth is willing to use the sizzling attraction between them to get information from her, but he won’t agree to take her with him. As much as he’s drawn to her, Garth won’t risk the safety of his family.

When Lacey foils a plot to poison them, Garth takes her with them when they flee. But they are not free yet. Betrayal and lies lead to a battle not only for their safety but also for their hearts.

The Marks Mercenaries

If you love space mercenaries, you’ll love the Marks brothers. These men are tough, relentless, and focused. Their goal—finding their sister who was abducted years ago.

The first three books in the series have been released—Rescuing Rory, Unexpected Angel, and Liberating Lacey.

Here’s a tease from Unexpected Angel, book 2.

TEASER:

Just when she thought it was hopeless, he groaned and came alive. A loud metal bang echoed in her ears when the wrench slipped from his fingers and fell to the floor. His strong arms banded around her and yanked her right off the floor. He slanted his mouth across hers and sucked on her tongue.

Delicious. Angelina forgot all about her plan, forgot that her uncle was probably searching for her. All that mattered was that Amos was kissing her back.

He smelled of sweat and grease, but it wasn’t unpleasant. It was the scent of hard work. After a lifetime spent around men who preferred to wield their power through business, it was a revelation. This is what a workingman smelled like. His muscles were earned honestly, and he was incredibly strong. He was holding her as though she weighed nothing at all.

Unexpected Angel

Mark Mercenaries, Book 2

Angelina Astoferus is on the run from her uncle, who wants to marry her off as part of a business deal. Her only hope is to find a spaceship to escape on—and a man willing to take her virginity, since her being pure is part of the deal. A desperate escape attempt leads her to the loading docks of the planet Oasis, where she spies Amos. Captivated by him, when the opportunity to sneak on board his ship arises, she takes it.

When Amos Marks discovers a stowaway on his ship, he knows she is big trouble. He and his brothers don’t need two dangerous enemies—her powerful uncle and the jilted warrior from Gravas—but Amos can’t turn his back on her. He decides to help her with her outlandish plan, but neither of them expects that the physical connection between them will lead to so much more.

Guest Post: Making the Sausage, or, the Nuts and Bolts of Rewriting by J.J. Lore

Some might have the impression that writing is a magical experience. Authors wander around in a distracted daze as they listen their muses and when inspiration strikes, they plunge into their work in a fevered rush, emerging from their office days later with messed hair and a masterpiece. Well, maybe it works that way for some, but for me, it’s a very step-by-step process. First I get an idea, either about characters interacting or a sequence of action. I make notes, do research, come up with a rough outline, and then I bang out a first draft. After that comes the hard part; rewriting. What follows is a little snippet of a manuscript I’m working on. I’m going to show you the rough draft, made in the phase when I have to get at least a thousand words on the page a day. I just let the characters talk and push them through the scene. First, a little set-up; My guy Eidan is an alien sheriff recently arrived on an isolated planet to bring law and order to a wild mining camp. My gal is the town postmistress who’s been there a while. Let’s go!

“Would you like to sit down?”
“No, I’m all muddy.” She gestured at the clean floor with a slight frown.
The thought of some mud wasn’t much of a deterrent to sex in his mind, but she was a tidier person. If she needed to have her boots off, he was inclined to help. He crouched down at her feet and reached to help her unfasten the buckles that held her boots on. Her fingers tangled with his and skittered away to work at other locations. As she stepped out of the first boot, her hand landed on his shoulder while she balanced and he liked the pressure of her palm against his muscles. Another flare of arousal warmed him and his cock thickened as the possibilities of their position tantalized. He reminded himself there was no need to rush. They would have all night since Bryjid wouldn’t be back from her shift until mid-morning.
Teah cleared her throat and moved away from the wet puddle on the mat. She peered around the living room like she was trying to memorize the location of every piece of furniture and electronic device. He gestured toward the sofa and with a quick little nod she went to it. The sofa Bryjid had ordered was large, soft, and perfectly suited to various copulatory arrangements.  With a little sigh she sat down on the edge of a full, dark blue cushion, her feet perfectly aligned on the floor. She glanced up at him and her eyes widened slightly as he sat next to her, close enough to shift her his way, but not so near as to touch any part of her yet. He’d thought she was attractive before, but now, with the quiet house surrounding them and the evening stretching ahead, he let himself look. Full lips, deep brown eyes, and little tumbles of curling russet hair, damp from the rain.
“You’re probably wondering why I’m here,” she said in a rush. “I’ve just been thinking about this for a couple of days and knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight if I didn’t deal with it.”
Not an especially ringing endorsement of coitus, but he was sure he could please her.
“I’ve heard some rumors. Gossip. People like to talk about newcomers.”
Ah, she was worried their assignation might become common knowledge. “Most of it is false, I’m sure.”
“Have you spoken with Bokum again?”
Eidan paused, drawn from his study of the shape of her mouth by her abrupt change in subject. Talking before intimacy was certainly acceptable, especially if it put her at ease. Once they began he was sure she wouldn’t be able to string a sentence together. “No. Is there some story about him?”
Her hand crept his way and clutched at the sofa cushion. “Yes. He’s, well, he’s untrustworthy. A criminal.”
Eidan nodded for her to continue.
“He’s not happy you’re here. Either of you, or Collective law for that matter. He has a lot of power in this town. A lot to lose.”
“I’m aware,” Eidan said, wondering how to get her back on track. He wasn’t worried about the maneuverings of a minor extortionist in this isolated place. He’d faced down @@@@ in his time as chief investigations officer on Eleon. A small man in a muddy suit was hardly going to evade the law when Eidan moved to enforce it. “I appreciate you coming to tell me about it.”
Her brows drew together. “I had to. You’re in some peril and deserve to know.”
Ahh, so she harbored kind feelings toward him. That would make their encounter all the more passionate. He leaned a little closer.
“There’s something else,” Teah said as her cheeks flushed pink. “It might not be something that you’re interested in anyway, so I hesitate to mention it.”
She smelled sweet; of some sort of flower he’d encountered long ago and forgotten until now.
“I’m embarrassed to bring it up,” she said in a quavering voice, a quick smile flitting across her mouth. He wondered how she might be.
“I think our conversation has gone remarkably well so far,” he replied with as an encouraging tone as possible.
“It’s ah, about sex.”
As soon as the words left her lips his whole body tensed. Any doubts he had about finding a human female arousing were firmly erased by the primal surge in his body.

Not too bad. I’m having them come at the conversation from different directions, which I love to write, but upon further reading, I realize I want more of Eidan’s lust for her to come out. He’s hot for her and confident, which I want to play up. Her reactions are fine since she’s visiting merely to warn him so the stakes are low for her. I also want to play up his ‘otherness’ by making his language more formal, as if he’s learned it from a manual and doesn’t have a grasp of slang or colloquialisms.

“Would you like to sit down?”
“No, I’m all muddy.” She gestured at the clean floor with a slight frown.
The thought of some mud wasn’t much of a deterrent to sex in his mind, but she was a tidier person. If she needed to have her boots off, he was inclined to help. He crouched down at her feet and reached to help her unfasten the buckles that held her impervious boots on. He reminded himself there was no need to rush even though his body was longing for hers. They would have all night since Bryjid wouldn’t be back from her shift until mid-morning. What an unexpected but completely welcome way to conclude his day. (Okay, I added that last sentence so show he’s confident she’s there to get in bed with him. He’s sure she finds him irresistible. He’s in for a big shock.)
Teah cleared her throat and moved away from the wet puddle on the mat. She peered around the living room like she was trying to memorize the location of every piece of furniture and electronic device. He gestured toward the sofa and with a quick little nod she scurried to it. He’d thought she was attractive before, but now, with the quiet house surrounding them and the evening stretching ahead, he let himself assess and appreciate her even more. Full lips, deep brown eyes, and little tumbles of curling russet hair, damp from the rain. Unusual, but very pretty. (Put in that last sentence to point out they are different species and what we find normal, brown hair and eyes, he finds exotic.)
“You’re probably wondering why I’m here,” she said in a rush. “I’ve just been thinking about this for a couple of days and knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight if I didn’t deal with it.”
Not an especially ringing endorsement of coitus, rather like something she was checking off her to-do list, but he was sure he could please her. She didn’t seem to need a reply because she continued. (I decided I needed to indicate dialogue here.)
“I’ve heard some rumors. Gossip. People like to talk about newcomers.”
Ah, she was worried their assignation might become common knowledge. “Most of it is baseless, I’m sure.” (Switched false with baseless to increase formality and sound more legalese, since he’s a sheriff.)
She shook her head and again clasped her hands together. “Have you spoken with Bokum again?”
Eidan paused, drawn from his study of the shape of her mouth by her abrupt change in subject. General conversation before intimacy was certainly acceptable, especially if it put her at ease. Once they began he was sure she wouldn’t be able to string a sentence together. “No. Is there some story about him?” (Again, changed a word to make him sound more formal.)
Her hand crept his way and clutched at the sofa cushion. “Yes. He’s, well, he’s untrustworthy. A criminal.”
Eidan nodded for her to continue. She leaned closer and lowered her voice. (I put this sentence in so the reader can visualize their postures and show that Eidan sees her as getting closer to him as a prelude to seduction. In reality, she’s just nervous and wants to keep her voice down.)
He’d faced down contract killers, rogue bounty hunters, and armed gangs in his time as chief investigations officer on Eleon. A small man in a muddy suit was hardly going to evade the law when Eidan moved to enforce it. “I appreciate you coming to tell me about it.” (And here’s another one of my ways to get the words on the page when I’m writing a first draft; using @@@@ to skip a section where I’ll go back and add more detail when I’m re-writing. I couldn’t think of a list of bad guys at the time, so I just kept going.)
Her brows drew together. “I had to. You’re in some peril and deserve to know.”
Ahh, so she harbored kind feelings toward him. That would make their encounter all the more passionate. He leaned a little closer.
“There’s something else,” Teah said as her cheeks flushed pink. This was looking promising.
He wondered how demanding she might be. It would be interesting to be directed during a sexual encounter. (I re-read this part and knew I needed a stronger sexual hint here, so I threw in ‘demanding’ and the next sentence about him speculating about her proclivities.)
“I think our conversation has gone remarkably well so far,” he replied with as an encouraging tone as possible.
“It’s ah, about sex.”
As soon as the words left her lips his whole body tensed. Any doubts he had about finding a human female arousing were firmly erased by the primal surge in his body.

So that reads a little better to me. I feel like more of Eidan’s personality has come out and I ramped up his sexual tension too. Mission accomplished! Once I’ve completed this stage of re-writing, I send the piece off to my critique partner. When she sends me suggestions, I start the whole process over again.
