Anna! Where the hell have you been?

Howdy all! Did you think I died?

I know. It’s been forever since you’ve seen me. And I know I say this every time but seriously, where has the year gone?

While I’ve been focusing on me and my family, I’ve still been working away and am so happy that the next book in the Sprawling A series is ready for pre-order and can be in your hands on July 18th!

Amazon: http://amzn.to/2skR7og

iBooks: https://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/book/eight-seconds-to-forever/id1239253403?mt=11

Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/eight-seconds-to-forever

But besides the plugging away on the book, I’ve had a pretty active spring. In February I had the pleasure of attending what ended up being the last Wild Wicked Weekend. Sad, I know. Good thing I took lots of pictures of me, and my friends, and my new friends, and the crazy activities we participated in and can share them with you. Well, almost all of the hijinks. I know there are pictures of me and Taylor having pretend sex during Sex Position Gumby somewhere in the universe just waiting to hit the net in the future.

Then in March was at the Emerald City Comic Con. This was my first year as a vendor, and I had an amazing time!!! I met so many people and had the immense joy of introducing the idea of a superhero romance to a new group of geeky-folks.  Fingers-crossed I get to go back next year.

Did you have a fantastic spring? Looking forward to a blazing hot summer? Me too! Can’t wait to share more adventures with you.

Until next time!

Dr. Strange

Good morning!

Marvel Movie Studios has done it again and brought us another fabulous superhero movie, and I'm so happy the streak continues.

Dr. Steven Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a brilliant neurosurgeon, and boy does he know it. Flying high on his arrogance and self-importance, the world as he knows it comes to an abrupt end when he is involved in a car accident on the way to a speaking engagement.

With his hands unable to perform the work that defined him, he searches endlessly to the point of madness for a cure. Following a lead that seems to be almost too good to be true, he ends up in Nepal, thinking he might have found a haven in cutting-edge eastern medicine, but instead finds a group of sorcerers who tap into magic to protect the Earth from villains from the Multiverse.

Despite a few instances of uneven pacing, I loved Dr. Strange. I understood his pain and desperation to retain his glory. The fight scenes were phenomenal and the special effects on point. You have no idea how much I want to be able to fashion a shield or chain of flame out of thin air. That would be so cool! And I appreciated the moments of unexpected humor that lightened the mood when times turned dark and depressing.

But as always, they added a love interest that did not need to be there. Rachel McAdams is a lovely woman, but her role wasn't necessary. That character could have been a sister or an esteemed college and would have had the same impact on the story. But other than that, the movie is fantastic and I can't wait to see it again.

And for the love of all that is holy, stay until after the credits. It's a Marvel movie. There is always a payoff. Now, if you insist on leaving, I can't stop you. But seriously, stay!

Until next time!

Emerald City Comic Con with Anna Alexander

Right now I am winging my way to Las Vega to the Romantic Times Convention, but more on that later. This weekend was all about the Emerald City Comic Con.

A few of our students
The best thing about this year's event was I presented a panel! Yep, Danielle Monsch and I presented our business of writing workshop. We had an excellent turn out, and I was so happy to see so many future romance novelists at the Con.

It's the Romi and Michelle show!
But the fun didn't end there. After our book signing, I roamed the halls and talked to many other authors about marketing and genre fiction. Very eye opening and fascinating.

Now, I can tell you more, but I'd prefer to show you the awesome time I had.

Soooo happy
As for the RT Convention, I'll be signing at the giant bookfair and FAN-day. If you'll be at the Rio, check out the hashtag #RT16 and look for flash contests I'll be hosting throughout the week.

Until next time, y'all!

Have you seen Ant-Man yet? No? Why the hell not?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

The big question that had been asked prior to the release of Ant-Man was how was it going to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since the-powers-that-be at MCU failed (in my opinion) to make the connection between worlds with every movie after the first Avengers, I wondered about that too.

My fears of disappointment were settled from the very first line of dialogue. “Stark!”

Turns out Michael Douglas's character, Dr. Hank Pym, worked for shield. Bam! Just like that, we are in the MCU. But the connections didn't stop there. With Ant-Man, the creators took those few seconds to show where the movie fits into the universe. And they did it simply and beautifully. I won't give away any spoilers. It’s more fun if you discover those gems on your own.

What I also loved about Ant-Man, besides the adorable Paul Rudd and his hysterical Guardians of the Galaxy-like crew members, were the fight scenes. I swear, it seems as if every superhero movie must destroy at least a good percentage of the planet. There are only so many scenes of mass destruction I can take. I don't know if the possibilities presented with having characters that are smaller to scale than the average human inspired the filmmakers, or if they just put forth that little bit of energy into providing something new, but we had awesome fight scenes that went beyond  the spectacle of exploding buildings. From a battle on a toy train to the inside of the briefcase (Yes, the inside of a briefcase!)  it was fantastic. And my eyes didn't grow tired by trying to separate shrapnel from story telling. J

But don’t take my word about the greatness of this move. Go see Ant-Man. And stay until after the credits roll. Yes, I screamed and my fists shot into the air victoriously.

Until next time y'all!

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

The Avengers: Age of Ultron opened this weekend, so you shouldn't be surprised that I'm posting a review today. You also shouldn't be surprised that I saw it twice. :)

On Saturday night, me and my BFF Danielle Monsch settled in at the iPic theater with our fleece blankets and cocktails for some 3-D fun. Then yesterday it was the Chicklets and I munching on popcorn at ten a.m. Truthfully, I'm glad I saw it twice. There is so much spectacle and fist-flying, building-crumbling explosions, I needed the second go-round to catch all the things I missed the first time.

It's cocktail time!
Age of Ultron drops us right into the heart of the action with our heroes going after Loki's sceptre which they have tracked down in a Hydra stronghold. After emerging victorious, Tony convinces Thor to let him examine the sceptre for a few days to dissect it's secrets. Tony and Bruce Banner then discover that the energy inside the sceptre closely resembles artificial intelligence, and work to transplant that energy into Tony's Iron Legion (Iron Men suits without a person inside) to create the ultimate weapon against future alien invasions. Of course as what usually happens when working with substances you don't understand, the artificial intelligence morphs, distorts, and becomes Ultron, a peace keeping robot who's version of peace is annihilation of the human race.
...sigh. Love him.

And we're off on a race to stop the destruction of mankind. Tony is snarky. Banner conflicted. The Cap is as dreamy as ever, and Thor is full of boisterous, Viking enthusiasm. It was rip roaring, good fun. Did I like the movie? Yes. Did I love it? No.

Wha???  you may ask. How could I not love it?

As I said, Age of Ultron drops us right in the middle of the action as if to pick up where the first Avengers left off. In my opinion that is the problem. What about everything that happened in Iron Man III, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and almost two seasons of Agents of SHIELD? There were too many unanswered questions right from the get go. In IR3 Tony Stark blows up all of his Iron Man suits and walks away. Why did he make a new suit? Why did he build the Iron Legion? How did all of the Avengers get called together again? Who made the call? Agent Coulson was on the trail of the sceptre, why wasn't he there first? Or at all? And Nick Fury walked way from everything, leaving the tattered remains of SHIELD to agent Coulson. Where, why, and how did Fury make a new SHIELD without letting Coulson know? Am I supposed to forget something as important as story continuity and just roll with it because it's the Marvel Universe?

If you are to ask a male comic book lover, the answer is yes.

How do I know this? I had the same issues with IR3 and CA:WS when no one came to assist the Avenger in need. In fact, it was as if the movies didn't take place in the same universe when that has been the Marvel Cinematic Universe sales pitch, all of the movies are connected. But if you ask the men in my family, MCU is following the comic book style of story telling, where each hero has their own story line, and when there is a need for cross promotion, they come together for a special issue, or series of issues, then take off again on their own and don't think of each other until it's time for that next special issue.

But these aren't comic books. These are movies, and I think that's lazy writing. I even wrote blog posts about it in the past. And my sister believes the same way I do. An opinion that is so contentious in my family, my brother and sister didn't speak to each other for a month after a heated argument about CA:WS.

I am a story teller. I write series. Continuity is everything, and my readers will know if I've left a stone un-turned or taken the easy way out if I written myself into a corner. That is when I need to up my game and work my magic. It's what makes a good story great. But movie makers will make excuses: The movie was running too long, we couldn't get that actor to agree on a contract, that element wasn't that important.

But it is. At least to me those little details are important. Those details would have taken a good movie and made it O.M.G. fantastic. I say let's do without a ten minute fight scene where not one but at least ten skyscrapers are turned to dust and shrapnel, and instead make it a five minute fight scene if it means you explain why Steve took a break from his search of Bucky to help out the rest of the Avengers. Answers please!

Now, am I saying don't go? Of course not! Go. See. Enjoy. Just keep in mind you will be expected to accept a lot on faith. And in the long run, that's not necessarily a bad thing. But it's not a good thing either ;)

Avengers assemble!

Anna Alexander Does the Emerald City Comic Con

The 2015 Emerald City Comic Con was insane. 80,000 people, over 200 hundred hours of workshops and panels, and exhibitor space that goes on forever. It’s Halloween and Christmas bundled up in three days of awesome, and I was a part of it.

Yep, this year I had the opportunity to be a player in the action and moderate several workshops in the Writer’s Block section of programing. I got to hang with authors Holly Black, Peter V. Brett and RJ Terrel, among many others, and talk about different topics in the writing world like pitching an idea, writing magic, and diversity in commercial fiction.

Seriously!
I also attended several of the celebrity panels and got my shopping on. I scored several charms, a new corset (of course) and super cool nail art I’m going to wear to the RT Convention. Adamantium nails- Score!

Who's ready to learn how to pitch?

Some of the fantastic costumes.

Haley Atwell said Chris Evan’s lips are soft and he smells really good. J She also spoke very eloquently about feminism, but, you know,  Chris Evans.

One of my purchases.

My first panel. Writing Magical McGuffins with Holly Black, HL Reasby, and Peter V. Brett.

Don't you love these Lego men? And of course, Stan Lee is represented.

Gina Torres –I think the power of your femininity can move you just as far as a set of balls. (Preach!)

Clark Gregg- For those of you who write Coulson/Thor/Hawkeye fanfic. Keep writing it. He thinks it’s funny, especially when the artists draw him with bigger muscles than he actually has. Also, I love it when an actor knows his show and is just as excited about the work as the fans. So attractive.
Did you know Anthony Mackie was roommates with Lee Pace while at Julliard? His stories about his early acting years are funny.

Oh, Captain my Captain.
John Barrowman is hysterical. If you have the chance to see him at a Con, go!

Get your copy today!
Next year the event will be four days. FOUR! I’m starting the countdown until next year now. J

Guilty Pleasures- Superman and Wonder Woman

Guilty pleasures. We all have them. One of my many guilty pleasures is reading the new line of Superman and Wonder Woman comics from DC Comics. Why do I love it so? Well, first of all you have Superman (total hottie) and Wonder Woman (kick-ass princess) who make the ultimate couple. They are so ultimate that their union sends mankind into a panic. What will happen if they decide to take over the world? We'd all be doomed. Like that would ever happen, but hey, it brings conflict to the story.

Secondly I love the good, old fashioned, soap opera feel to the story. Now that they’re a couple, Clark feels it’s his job to protect Wonder Woman, which she allows. Not. The art is fantastic in the way draw Wonder Woman as she says, “Seriously, Clark, I got it. This is my job. I've been saving the world for years.” And then there was issue six in which they have to make a life or death decision. Just before they swing the sword towards their salvation, or destruction, Clark says to Diana, “I love you.” To which she replies, “Of course you do.” Loved it! I crushed even more when a few issues down the road, Superman inhales Doomsday venom and turns a little nasty. In his frustration he shouts, “and I told you I loved you months ago. Why haven't you said anything?” (Hands clap with glee)

But it’s not just S&WW that has all of this delicious angst. In the Forever Evil line, our heroes have bizarro-world type counterparts. These villains arrive on Earth in the forms of Ultraman, Superwoman and Owl Man. Yep. Owl Man. Ultraman and Superwoman are a couple, and does he ever hold the reins on this relationship. But wait, Superwoman is catching a little something on the side with Owl Man, and she's (gasp) pregnant! Not only that, she tells BOTH men that they're the father! Secret babies!! I could add a million more exclamation points I love this so!

Of course, not everyone is as in love with these story lines as I am. My brother has rolled his eyes many times, but I say bring it on! In fact I think it's time to go back to "my stories."

Until next time my friends!
