The Family Connection

My upcoming release Border Town got sidetracked with the death of my grandfather in 2016, and I finished the story right around the time my grandmother passed away this year. In the space of 15 months, my husband and I lost three grandparents.

It can be extremely difficult to continue working, and writing, during times of sadness. No matter how much one prepares, the unexpected always happens.

That said, a certain amount of healing can happen while writing. I fully believe in the power of working through life’s difficulties via the written word. At the same time, working through issues that also may help others living through similar situations. It’s how we connect through stories.

Border Town centers on three sisters, Lucia, Dominique and Roxanne. The story is loosely based on my grandmother and her two sisters, who ended up marrying three military buddies. Growing up, I heard about the family ranch, and how they met my grandfather and his friends at a USO dance in south Texas.

As a long-time fan of the sci-fi series X-Files, I was instantly intrigued when bestselling author Lia Davis announced her publishing company After Glows, and the kickoff of the new Smex-Files series. With its rich history, and deep mysterious folk lore, the area my family comes from was a perfect setting for this story.

So this one goes out to my grandmother, who at 99 still loved to read her tales of romance, and hope.

Border Town
SLICE Agency, book one
By Louisa Bacio

Coming September 26, 2017 from After Glows Publishing

A thin line exists between reality and the paranormal, between one country and the next. Lucia grew up stuck between cultures on the border of Texas and Mexico and the wavy lines of reality. With the help of her two sisters, she runs the family ranch, or what’s left of it.

Years ago, a hurricane shifted the river, cutting through the property with their land partially ending up on the other side of the Rio Grande. Mother Nature unleashed more than land wars. Legend tells of a supernatural beast slaughtering the livestock every seven years. When the carcasses of goats show up drained of blood, she reaches out for help.

Shaw McDiamond doesn’t want to be stuck in a hick town chasing after the myth of the chupacabra. As part of an elite force of paranormal agents that work the border, Shaw’s group, SLICE, exposes aliens of another kind. This vampiric creature is like nothing he’s encountered, and the woman he’s working with unnerves him even more.

Lucia and Shaw clash over folklore and reality, fate and free will. As the killings escalate with the attack of a ranch hand, the storm returns, and the two become trapped in an ever-shifting world they can’t control. And to survive, they’ll have to do it together.

Anna! Where the hell have you been?

Howdy all! Did you think I died?

I know. It’s been forever since you’ve seen me. And I know I say this every time but seriously, where has the year gone?

While I’ve been focusing on me and my family, I’ve still been working away and am so happy that the next book in the Sprawling A series is ready for pre-order and can be in your hands on July 18th!

But besides the plugging away on the book, I’ve had a pretty active spring. In February I had the pleasure of attending what ended up being the last Wild Wicked Weekend. Sad, I know. Good thing I took lots of pictures of me, and my friends, and my new friends, and the crazy activities we participated in and can share them with you. Well, almost all of the hijinks. I know there are pictures of me and Taylor having pretend sex during Sex Position Gumby somewhere in the universe just waiting to hit the net in the future.

Then in March was at the Emerald City Comic Con. This was my first year as a vendor, and I had an amazing time!!! I met so many people and had the immense joy of introducing the idea of a superhero romance to a new group of geeky-folks.  Fingers-crossed I get to go back next year.

Did you have a fantastic spring? Looking forward to a blazing hot summer? Me too! Can’t wait to share more adventures with you.

Until next time!

The Wolves of Willow Bend are back! Snow Wolf by @HVLong #PNR #WickedlyHotWolves

SNOW WOLF by Heather Long
Outlaw Wolves & Defiant Hearts!

War may be coming for the Yukon, but Diesel’s battle is very personal.

Ranae is the youngest of the Buckleys, and the only girl amongst three powerful male siblings. Her restlessness and dominant nature has affected every relationship within Willow Bend, not to mention testing the patience of her Alpha. Apprenticeship to the Hunters fed her desire for a purpose. When her Alpha and eldest brother ask her to undertake a mission to the Yukon territory, she’s thrilled at the opportunity for a real chance to be useful.  Clashing with the Alpha was the last thing she expected on the dangerous assignment.

The oldest Alpha in the U.S. packs, lives a gray existence. The loss of his mate so many decades before wears away at him, until he doesn’t give a damn about anything. The problems of the other packs are not his, and he prefers to be left to his isolation. The arrival of the Chief Enforcer annoys him, but it is the wolf traveling with him who wakes the predator in Diesel. The scent of mate clings to her, but she rejects his overtures and challenges him on every level.

Happy St. Patty's Day, plus some news from Lia

Hello and Happy St. Patrick day. Are you wearing green? I am. *grins* I have some news for Ashwood Falls fans. Book 5 is now available for pre-order!!

A Leopard’s Path
Ashwood Falls #5

Stolen from her family as an infant, Ana Darwin-Andrews has to piece together her past and present. Her whole life is a lie. There’s only one man she feels she can trust, but even he has secrets.

Kieran Michaels keeps a tight lid on his past, but the Onyx Alpha knows his darkest secrets. Kieran will stop at nothing to destroy the rogue before the past is reveled. Ana can never discover his hands are as bloodstained as their enemy’s, because life without her is not an option.

Exclusive excerpt:

Her whole life was a lie.
Well, not her life exactly. Her biological father wasn’t the one she’d grown up knowing. Keegan Andrews wasn’t anything like the man who raised her. The monster, Felix, who’d stolen her from her true family and taught her to believe the Ashwood Falls Pack—the one she should have grown up in—was the enemy. The only thing Felix didn’t lie about was the fact that her mother was dead. He’d just left out the part where he was the one who killed her and stole Ana from her womb.
Ana clenched her teeth and gripped her coffee mug a little tighter. Life since coming to Ashwood and meeting her real family had been…nice. And challenging. Some of the younger Pack members still stared at her like they were waiting for her to turn on everyone. She couldn’t blame them really.
Releasing a sigh, Ana fingered the rose-shaped locket she’d worn for as long as she could remember. When she’d met Keegan in the summer, he’d told her it had belonged to her mother, Cate. It was she who’d picked the name Zorana. While Ana loved the name, she had always felt it a bit too exotic for her.
You can’t dwell on the past forever.
Ana forced her muscles to relax and leaned against the doorframe of the MoonRiver house she was temporarily staying in with Blaine—her brother and leopard Alpha of Ashwood Falls—and his two mates. She sipped her coffee as snow flurries drifted from the sky. The crisp early winter air soothed her cat, even while it tantalized the woman. She loved winter, loved the cold and snow. However, the sight in front of her was far from the magickal image she’d expect from the first snowfall.
MoonRiver used to be the wolves’ den before they merged their Pack with Ashwood. Now, Ana saw the full impact of the war that had pushed Luna to merge her wolves with the leopards over thirty years ago. Few homes still stood, and those that did were not unscathed. Others were either completely destroyed or just plain uninhabitable. The sight made the attack on Ashwood a few months ago appear like a training exercise in comparison.
Shame, pain, and outright rage whirled inside Ana like a cyclone. She had once called the monster responsible for all this Father. Not anymore. The dark veil had been lifted, and now she saw the truth.
Felix Darwin would pay for every life he’d destroyed.
And she was going to help make it happen.
