New Romance

Last week I started writing a new story in a new world with all new characters. This hasn't happened for me in awhile. Actually, my writing had slowed to a crawl after the three releases I'd had in the spring, so when I started a new story, I was instantly in love.

Starting a new story, for me, is a lot like starting a new romance. Or, at least, what I remember about starting a new romance. There are the flutters of excitement, the compulsion to spend all my available time obsessing about it, and I constantly wonder if the story is actually going somewhere.

This particular story is a horror romance, which adds a whole new level of anticipation to the process. Who is going to live and who isn't? Plus, I get to throw myself into a diabolically evil manifestation and figure out what its motivation is.

Over the next couple of weeks, I anticipate the story growing and my understanding of it becoming second nature. That's actually my favorite part of writing a story. I like the anticipation and excitement of starting something new, but I love when the story finally clicks into place. And then I will have to end it. Just like a relationship, I hate that part. It sucks to get to know somebody so well and be in their lives so deeply only to say goodbye and set them free. I always drag my feet on that part.

Do you experience anything similar when you read a new romance? Do you have stages you go through when you find a new author or series to love?

If you want to follow the progress of my newest story and all the other stories I'm writing (I also just finished writing a new Black Hills Wolves story and am polishing it up and getting it ready to submit) feel free to friend me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter

Jennifer Kacey - Violet's Shadow (Shadow Mates)

Violet's Shadow

Violet’s spent her whole life searching for where she belongs. When she finds it and her shadow comes to life, it’s only the beginning.
Two weeks alone in a secluded cabin is music to Violet’s ears. Until she sees a shadow in the forest with red glowing eyes. Red eyes she’s seen in her dreams for as long as she can remember. Eyes that make her want to forget the rest of the world. But she doesn’t believe in fairy tales anymore.
Rayden was sent to protect her. To keep her safe. Nothing more than to guide her as she transitions into a Shadow and takes her rightful place in the pack. What he finds instead is the mate he’s been unwilling to search for and a passion so fierce he’ll never be able to walk away.

Violet’s spent her entire life aching to belong and she finally finds it in the pack of Shadows she is destined to join. Everything she’s ever wanted in life and love is finally at her fingertips if she’s brave enough to embrace…her Shadow.

Excerpt -----

Violet Clare slammed the flimsy wooden door to her cabin, then threw the lock. It was somewhere around an inch of steel away from comforting. Retreating while keeping her eyes trained on the only entry point, she strained to identify what she could do to avoid the inevitable if the animal wanted in. With only moonlight illuminating the cabin she tried to convince her heart to evac out of her throat and settle into a more subdued rhythm. Instead, it had a mind of its own, and continued on the Jesus, Mary and what the fuck gravy train it was currently joy riding atop.

It was out there. Chasing after her. She’d seen him. Not him. It. A shadow. Or a wolf. Both?

At least she thought it was a wolf. But wolves weren’t so damn big and they sure as hell weren’t born with red, almost glowing eyes…

Remove the almost part.

Emphasis on the what the fuck part.

“It’s just a dream,” she whispered, trying desperately to stop shaking. “Only another dream. And I’m going to wake up. I am.”

Shaking her head didn’t work. Squeezing her eyes shut did nothing, but freak her out more.

Beyond the cabin, in the shadows of the huge pine trees—no from the shadows of the trees a wolf had appeared. Watching her. It was like something out of a children’s book. Not moving a single muscle but she knew every fiber of his being was ready to…what?

Pounce. Attack. Seduce?

“Heheheheeeheheeee—” A high-pitched giggle, the love child of her frayed nerves and anticipation, bubbled out until she slapped a hand over her mouth.

Holy nut house, Batman! Her mother had told her for as long as she could remember to get her head out of the clouds. Fairytales weren’t real and the sooner she learned to live in the real world the better off she’d be. At twenty-five, she still couldn’t seem to get that one right.

If someone needed a random prediction of the future she couldn’t control? She was their girl. For as long as she could remember, she experienced foresight—visions which came true. Every. Single. Time. She’d been hiding her freaky ability since the first time she’d made the mistake of telling her mother something she knew was going to happen. When her predictions came true, her mom had been furious. Violet’s backside still stung when she thought about how angry her Mom had been. Scared even. So she’d tried to act the part. Perfect daughter. Perfect student. Perfect employee. Living a lie in the real world? It didn’t fit her so well. Never had.

But what if her dreams were true? She shook her head again as she continued to retreat from the door. Not possible. It’s just not possible. A wolf with red eyes appearing right outside a cabin she’d rented and only one other person knew she was at.

The travel agent promised her a remote, picturesque secluded getaway located in the middle of a protected forest in East Texas. Perfect for a couple weeks of rest and relaxation in the summer where nature walks abound and it was almost expected to sunbathe for hours—all described in the brochure. Didn’t say anything about creatures stalking her in the forest or appearing out of thin fucking air.

“It’s beautiful there,” the travel agent told her as she’d booked Violet’s flights from where she lived in Destin, Florida. “It will be a trip to remember. Fresh air, sunshine, and you’ll be surrounded by wild flowers.”

“Wild flowers my ass,” Violet murmured as she finally hit the far wall. Being jarred out of her inner monologue, she ran clammy hands across the wood behind her. A weapon wasn’t forth coming along the wall as her heart got good and comfy on its seat on the holy shit train to freakoutville.

Violet slid down the wall and wrapped her arms over her knees seeing nothing but the pair of bright red eyes following her all the way to the cabin as she’d sprinted for the only structure within fifty miles. Out for a walk to get some fresh air, she’d caught a whole heck of a lot more nature than she’d planned on. God she had felt the gaze on her like a caress. Her body had responded like someone had licked her up the middle. Her breathing grew labored, her nipples pebbled and wetness coated the lips of her pussy preparing to be penetrated clear through to her soul. Adrenaline coursed through her veins as if she’d had someone seducing her for hours. A lover dedicated to showing her what it was going to feel like when she came so hard reality fell away and the only thing left was her desire staring at her with those red eyes. The same red eyes she’d been dreaming of for the entire twenty-five years she’d been breathing. She’d known them forever. Which is why she’d run. Terrified he was real. More terrified he wasn’t.

Fear and desire fought for dominance inside her and she had no idea how to process either.

She closed her eyes, tucked her hair behind her ears and held her breath, straining to listen. Rationalizing came next and she hoped going crazy had some kind of user’s manual or flow chart like the five stages of grief.

Step one. Run through the forest at night like a crazy woman. Check.

Two. Embrace the crazy person laugh. Check.

Three. Sit in a dark cabin, hiding from the boogeyman and rationalize everything that happened in the last few minutes, ending with the assertion you most certainly are NOT crazy?

Yes it had been dark out, and yes she had partaken in a glass of wine with dinner, but she wasn’t crazy.

Double. Check.

This was supposed to be the vacation of a lifetime so she could find some direction. Figure out what she really wanted to do with her life, but her focus was shittier than a fertilizer convention. And now here she sat, huddled in the corner, wondering what she could use for a weapon. Damn. Not the best time to remember her cell phone didn’t work out here either.

A couple weeks alone in the wilderness to take stock of her life was supposed to be uneventful to downright boring so she could decide what she was going to do when she got home. It seemed destiny had arrived a few days early to get the low down on the here and now.

Well the here and now was about to pee herself if—

Her inner Oprah went mute when a faint creak sounded right outside the door. Someone or something had just stepped onto the porch.

Yesterday it could have been the wind or a bunny. Cause bunnies are soft and cuddly and a bunny didn’t eat people, right? But her current circumstances were so not yesterday.

A louder snort echoed outside, followed by another creak and a dark shadow passing across the small crack under the door.

I’ve waited for you for years and when I find you, you run?”

What. The. Hell.

A Kiss in the Dark by Lisa Fox...Steamy Bad Boy Romance!

A Kiss in the Dark by Lisa Fox
Book Three of the Midnight Kiss Series, set in the dynamic world of ONE KISS

A bad boy can make a girl feel so good...
Grace’s attraction to her new web designer, amateur boxer and all-around playboy, Ryan Granger, is off the charts. But the bad boy of programming is not someone she needs to get entangled with. She’s got too many responsibilities and no time for games. She has deadlines to meet and a sick father to care for. Ryan is tempting, but being with him is completely unrealistic. Still, a girl can fantasize, right?

Ryan wants Grace badly, but while he’s building her website, they have to keep things strictly professional. Thankfully, walking her home during a city-wide blackout is on his own time and whatever happens in the dark doesn’t count. He’s falling hard for Grace and he is a man used to winning. The only problem is, he’s got to convince her that he’s worthy of her trust.

Grace looked at Ryan and sipped her coffee. Suddenly the pressure was on. He had to make the right impression, but now that Kat was gone, the funky feeling in his gut was insanely distracting. He would be willing to wager a considerable amount of money that she was just as interested as he was. It was loud and clear in the tension in the air between them. But he couldn’t act on it. Couldn’t even consider it. She was his client.
“So, okay,” he said, fumbling a bit. What did he need to know? He looked her over again. Was she free tonight? How did she feel about shameless, hot, animal sex? He took a deep breath and bit down on the inside of his cheek as hard as he could. “Let’s start with the basics. What kind of pages would you like your website to have?”
“Hmm,” she said, thinking it over. “A page for my books for sure. A bio, a contact page, maybe news and appearances? That can be one page.” She tapped her index finger against her lip and his gaze fixed on her mouth. She was turning him inside out and she didn’t even know it. “I think that’s it.”
He struggled to keep his face professionally plain. “Do you have a fun kind of page? Or a blog? We’ve found that authors who give readers a little something extra get a lot more traffic and repeat hits.”
She curled her upper lip, obviously not liking the idea. “I don’t have time to constantly update things like that. I have a tight schedule.”
Ryan nodded. “I understand. I could do the updating for you, but the information would have to come from you. Quirky things that you’ve come across while researching, free reads, giveaways. These things really help traffic. It gives people something beyond the basic, ‘here’s my book, buy my book, please’ kind of thing.”
She blew air out of her nose. “That does make sense. I’ll have to think about it and get back to you.”
“Great,” Ryan said. “Make me a list and we’ll build something from there.”
“Have you done this before?” she asked. “You sound like you know what people want.”
“No,” Ryan admitted. “You’ll be my first author.” He did not allow himself to fully contemplate the possibilities and implications of that statement. “But Sharpe Designs has a lot of authors for clients, in all different genres. We know what works.”
Her smile turned playful, flirtatious. “How’d you get that black eye? An unsatisfied client?”
He laughed. “No, I box.” He rubbed his stubbly cheek and the flare of pain was a welcome distraction. “I’m usually more put together than this. Sorry. I was in a tournament last night.”
She leaned across the table toward him, offering him an outstanding view of her plump cleavage. “Did you win?”
His mouth went bone dry, and he quickly lifted his gaze up to her face. “I did.”
“You must be pretty good.”
“I’m very good.”
“But not the best?”
He grinned. “I don’t like to brag.”
She responded with a slow curve of her lush lips. How was he going to get this woman into his bed? That had to happen. Because he wanted her a whole lot.
Her cell phone vibrated, and she jumped. The way she scrambled for it made him think she was expecting an important call. Or maybe dreading one. Her face was tight and tense as she looked at the screen, and then she visibly relaxed. Whatever it was, she decided not to answer it now and tucked the phone back in her purse.
“Sorry,” she said, looking back up at him. She took a deep breath, let it out. “I actually need to get going. Is there anything more I can tell you? I have to get my words in for the day.”
“I think we’re good for now.” He wanted to see her again. Needed to see her again. And it was perfectly reasonable. It was for the site. Today was Thursday. He thought about the earliest he could have something done. He didn’t want to stress Kat out with a tight deadline. She had at least three other projects going on. “Can we meet again on Wednesday? I’ll have a solid working outline for you by then.”
She bit her lower lip, looked away. “Do we have to meet? Can’t we just do it through email?”
Ryan tried not to take it as hard as he did, but his heart sank as the rejection set in. “Whatever you’d like, Grace. It’s your site. We can do it however you want.” But please say you’ll meet me, that I’ll get to see you again.
Grace grimaced. “No, never mind, it’s okay. I can come in.” She gave him a beseeching look. “I just… I have tight deadlines and daily word counts that I have to meet. This is just a bad time.” She let out a long breath. “But I guess there never is a good time, is there? And I do want this done. Wednesday is fine. Is the afternoon all right?”
“The afternoon is excellent.” Technically, he could do everything by email. But he was selfish and far too happy to let any guilt ruin his good fortune. “How about four?”
She nodded. “Sounds good.”
She rose out of the chair, and Ryan held the door open for her as she exited the meeting room. He wanted to offer her his arm, not for support like with Kat, but because he wanted to be close to her, touch her in some way. He couldn’t get quite close enough to get a whiff of her perfume and he was intensely disappointed. He really did want to know what she smelled like.
She left the building, and he smiled to himself as he watched her disappear into the crowd on Spring Street. He was a little pained to see her go, but he would be seeing her again. They had a date. Well, an appointment. Whatever. He was seeing her again and that’s all that mattered.
Back at his desk, he sat down and cracked his knuckles. Before he could even begin her project, he had to do a little research on the author. He needed to get a sense of her books, her style, before he could know what was right for her. He tried not to feel like a creeper as he typed her name into Google. It was for work. It was what he would have done with any client. His personal interest had no place in it. The fact that he was thrilled when he saw that she was single meant nothing. She was just another client. He scrolled through the returns, picking up little tidbits about her professional life. She’d won quite a few awards and was part of a reading series last month at The New School. He opened a new tab, went to Amazon, and downloaded her first book to his tablet. He’d read that over the weekend. He went back to his search list and clicked on her Wiki page. It was time to get to know Grace Betancourt.

For those who love bundles...

I just released the second volume of my Ashwood Falls series. The third volume will release at the beginning of August.

Ashwood Falls Volume Two

Includes: Surrendering to the Alpha, A Rebel’s Heart, and Divided Loyalties

Surrendering to the Alpha
Ashwood Falls book 3

Ashwood Falls’ leopard Alpha, Keegan Andrews holds onto the pain of his deceased mate as his own personal hell—a reminder that not all things are what they seem. The Pack Scribe, Addyson Lewis is no exception. She’s intrigued him like no other since the day she stumbled into Ashwood territory about twenty-five years ago. When he discovers that just being near her calms the storm inside him, he can’t stay away even if it means exposing her to the evil she tried to escape.

A Rebel’s Heart
Ashwood Falls book 3.5

Widow and mother of five full-grown males, Sarah Matthews lives the best she can—one day at a time. Now that her babies are having babies, she relishes in spoiling her grandkids. But her inner mountain lion is restless and Sarah can’t shake the feeling something is lurking in the woods surrounding her home. The unease becomes a reality when a man she thought died with her mate five years ago comes back into her life with trouble on his heels.

Divided Loyalties
Ashwood Falls book 4

Hayden Raines has always followed the rules. As the Ashwood Fall wolf Marshal, he has to set the example for those working under him. When he sets his sights on the beautiful human hunter things go downhill, fast. Fate has a funny way of turning things inside out—because the woman he kidnaps, the enemy he might need to protect his family from, just happens to be his mate.

Are you ready for The Rending? Let's explore Redemption

Hi, everyone!

Books 1 and 2 of The Rending will be releasing on Tuesday. I'm thrilled the second book, Redemption's Forgiveness is part of the Romancing the Wolf anthology.

When I first came up with this series idea, I wanted to infuse everything I love about shifter romances into a post-apocalyptic/dystopian environment. The result was The Rending. I've had a tremendous amount of help breathing life into the world. The first angel to help was Lori, who created this lovely map of The Rending world for me. To say she did stunning work is an understatement, especially since what she had to work with was pen drawn lines across interstates of a U.S. map that was scanned to her. LOL. See? Total angel, right?

Books 1 and 2 both take place in Redemption, which is a trading post established and run by the paraspecies. (The human NAH forces call them The Others). Redemption is the gutted remnants of what is now the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Specifically, it's the area where Interstate 35 bubbles out into East and West.

Scott Carpenter designed all the covers for this series and has done a remarkable job visually representing Redemption. Since Redemption is gutted remnants of what was once Dallas, I wanted to show the destruction, yet also show the progressive repairs.

The Tower used by the flyers is the one in the middle. Technically the tall building to the right doesn't really exist in my books, but we'll pretend that's a future growth development :)

Security for Redemption is handled by the wolf pack, which is run by the Quadrant Alpha, Adrik. He's the hero of book 1. Book 2 features Marek, one of the sentinels (enforcers).

So, there's a small peek into The Rending world. If you'd like to see more, visit www.therendingseries.com. It's a work in progress, but will soon have an in-depth glossary and bonus footage.

Meanwhile, here's a peek into Book 1, now titled Redemption. It was originally in the Under a Wolf Moon anthology. It's been slightly expanded and will now be in ebook and print formats:)

Redemption Blurb:

Mira grew up in a savage tract of existence known as Hell’s Highway—a parcel of land for genetically impure humans (Impures) cast out during a savage battle between humanity’s government  (the NAH) and the Paraspecies. When a cease fire was declared, the two opposing sides retreated, regrouped, but the fight for survival had just begun for Impures forced to exist within a kill or be prey existence.

As a runner for The Alliance, Mira ran messages and provisions back and forth between her camp and Redemption—a bartering outpost created by the Paraspecies to help Impures within Hell’s Highway. But for the past two years Mira has been a prisoner of war, detained and tortured in an unsanctioned NAH facility within the lawless lands of Hell’s Playground. Now free, she must risk her life to fulfill a promise made to a fellow prisoner—travel to Redemption and enlist the aid of the Paraspecies. Returning to the outpost, though, means reuniting with the Alpha wolf she’d once hoped to have a future with.

As Quadrant Alpha of the most dangerous section of Paraspecies land, the last thing Adrik needs is the Impure from his past suddenly returning after two years. He ripped Hell’s Highway apart searching for her two years ago, and his pack reaped the consequences of his shattered soul. Now, with a civil war threatening on his southern border, the constant battles with the succubae on his eastern border, and the latest command from Headquarters to assume the role of Alpha Commander, he doesn’t have time to wander around Hell’s Playground searching for a secret facility no one believes exists.

But the temptation to spend time with the Impure he’d once intended to mate proves too tempting. Together they must heal the wounds their time apart created and find a way to survive the dangers awakened.

Naughty or Nice? by Em Brown

Scientific research has shown that women are just as responsive to erotic imagery as men and that women are not lesser sexual beings than men (testosterone is not the only the contributing “ingredient” for arousal), but women have long faced the belief that “nice” girls aren’t supposed to be overly sexual. As the saying goes, “Girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice.”

Nice. Not naughty.

Naughty girls might have sex just for the pure physical enjoyment of it. Nice girls wouldn’t have sex unless affection or commitment was involved. Naughty girls might have sex with different partners. Nice girls don’t sleep around.

But in the erotic romance genre, “nice” girls can be naughty, too.

I’ve written both kinds of heroines: the virginal, inexperienced or sexually repressed young woman (á la Anastasia Steele) and the more experienced woman with a healthy (sometimes voracious) sexual appetite. With the former, there is something exciting about one’s first sexual awakening. With the latter, the tension between two people more evenly matched can lead to a myriad of erotic possibilities. In my Punishing Miss Primrose series, the heroine is completely comfortable in her sexuality and has no trouble asserting it—to the consternation (and arousal) of the hero, Lord Carey. The bedchamber is the setting for a power struggle between two very passionate people, each vying in their own way to right a wrong and avenge the past.

Which kind of heroine do you prefer to read about? I'd love to hear, so feel free to drop me a line at www.EroticHistoricals.com.

ABOUT PUNISHING MISS PRIMROSE, PARTS I-V

Miss Primrose needs to be punished.

A member of the wickedly wanton Inn of the Red Chrysanthemum, where the most taboo and illicit pleasures are indulged, Miss Primrose—or Mistress Primrose, as she prefers—left Nicholas Edelton a shell of a man. Now his older brother, Spencer Edelton, the Marquess of Carey, intends to provide her a set-down she will never forget.

Weary from exacting her revenge upon the man who raped her sister, Beatrice Primrose has had her fill of men of privilege and presumption, but she accepts a fateful invitation from a handsome nobleman to spend a sennight at his estate for a grand sum of money. She soon learns, however, that she will not get to reprise her role as Mistress. To her horror, she finds his lordship expects her to submit to him!

But Beatrice won’t give in so easily.

In a clash of wills, fueled by vengeance and lust, Lord Carey and Miss Primrose wrestle for dominance in, and out of, the bedchamber. Their biggest struggle, however, may be against their own desires…

Can Miss Primrose take what she dishes? And will Lord Carey succumb or succeed in punishing Miss Primrose?

EXCERPT FROM PUNISHING MISS PRIMROSE, PART I-V

“I thought I told you to wait in your chambers.”

The voice at the library entrance startled her, and she dropped the book. Turning, she held up her lamp. His lordship stood with his hands at his hips. He had removed his coat, and his hair was slightly disheveled, as if he had run his hands through it several times. There was a gloss to his eyes that she had not noticed during dinner.

“A Mistress does not receive commands. She gives them,” she informed him as if he were her student. She set the lamp on a table nearby.

The corner of his mouth twitched, as if he were about to smirk.

“And you take great pleasure in commanding others,” he said as he advanced toward her.

Did he mean to accuse her? she wondered.

He stopped and picked up her book, noting its title. “How fitting.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Your pardon?”

“Have you read it?”

“Some years ago.”

“And do you find a kindred spirit in the heroine, a whore, thief, and felon?”

The antagonistic edge in his tone made her defensive. She snatched the book from him, though it was his property.
“Through Moll Flanders, the author has painted the plight of women with great sympathy. One cannot help but admire the determination and resourcefulness of Mrs. Flanders.”

“A woman of loose virtue, dishonest, scheming—by her own admission. In the end, she and her husband live in sincere penitence for their wickedness.”

“A luxury not afforded to many.”

He paused in thought. “You believe her actions were compelled by her circumstances.”

“A woman must make her own fortune and seek her own justice. She cannot expect these will be granted to her in any easy form. She may be the most moral and honest and intelligent creature, but these virtues are not always awarded. And if a wrong be done to her, who will defend her? Will it ever be made right?”

Seeing his look of surprise, she realized she must have spoken too vehemently. She glanced away to hide her emotion.

“An unfortunate reality,” he said, after a pause, with more compassion than she expected. “But one’s circumstances, no matter how dire, do not absolve a man of wrongdoing.”

“You would that a beggar submit to starvation rather than steal a loaf of bread?”

“Are your circumstances comparable to that of a beggar?”

She stared at him. Why would he ask such a question? What a strange evening this had become! Though she was partly excited to be engaging in a discussion on the merits of virtue—she could think of no one of late with whom she had had such interesting discourse, and he had listened to her opinions without hastily dismissing them—it was wholly unexpected, leaving her perplexed and a little rattled.

“My circumstances are no affair of yours,” she said.

Hoping to place some distance between them so that she could compose her thoughts, she turned away from him, but he reached for the bookshelf beside her, blocking her path with his right arm. He was now closer to her than ever, and she detected the aroma of brandy upon him. Her pulse quickened. She had neglected to devise a strategy for her engagement with this patron, and she sensed the danger of not having done her due diligence, especially as she found herself responding in a most inconvenient fashion to his nearness.
