It's Victoria Day in Canada

Top Five Things to Do This Holiday Weekend

This is Victoria Day in Canada, or as we call it in my neck of the woods, the May Two-Four weekend. It’s a statutory Federal holiday and the unofficial kickoff to the summer season. The holiday has been observed in Canada since at least 1845, originally falling on Victoria's actual birthday (24 May 1819). Now it’s celebrated on the last Monday preceding May 25.

We call it the May Two-Four weekend to refer both to Queen Victoria’s birthday, but a two-four is also how we refer to a twenty-four pack of beer, always a popular drink on the holiday weekend.

So how do we celebrate:

1. A lot of folks go camping or to their cabins. I’ve seen snow on the holiday weekend and I also went swimming one year. Yeah, the weather is unpredictable around here.

2. Drinking. It has to be said, a lot of people will gather at parties and enjoy a few cold and alcoholic beverages.

3. Barbeque. You have to fire up the barbeque and grill some steaks or burgers or hotdogs…something.

4. Campfire. It’s always a nice weekend to have a campfire on the beach. I haven’t done this in years, but did a lot of it during my teenage years.

5. Relax. It is a holiday after all, a three-day weekend to relax with family and friends, maybe curl up and read a good book.

While Wolf of her Own isn’t due out until May 28th, you can always pre-order, or maybe check out the others in the series, if you haven’t already done so.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday.

Salvation Pack, Book 9

Mikhail Matheson may be an outsider in Salvation, but he stays with the pack to be close to his sister. It has nothing to with the fact that Elise—the most fascinating woman he’s ever laid eyes on—is part of the pack. Mikhail has wanted Elise for years, but being with her could cost him his life. Soon he’ll have to decide if he’s going to leave the pack or risk it all to pursue a place at her side.

After escaping her abusive mate, Elise LaForge has made a home in Salvation with her sons. She never expected to have her emotions stirred up by the always serious and seriously handsome Mikhail. But can she finally put her past behind her and dare to move on?

When danger creeps into the pack, both she and Mikhail have to be willing to sacrifice everything to have a chance at love.

Summer Is Just Around The Corner by Jennifer Kacey

It seems like every day I have a delightfully warm passing thought that summer is getting closer and closer.

The end of the school year is coming and the BEACH and flip flops (I'm wearing a pair while writing this even though it was 50° this morning!) and making ice cream and planting outdoor plants.

I love summer and thought I'd share that we'll make it!! Everybody have a great day!

Decadently Yours,
Jennifer Kacey

What I did during my summer vacation...

I feel as if I say this every month, but holy heck. It’s September already?!?!?

If you were like me, you had a busy summer. All of my favorite festivals happen in July and August and you’ll often find me out in the sun on the weekend.

First off was the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Conference where I was a speaker on their romance panel. I always get a kick out of attending cross genre conferences. For some reason the non-fiction and mystery/sci-fi authors make me giggle.

It was a pleasure to be on the panel with Gerri Russell, Pam Binder, and Meghan Farrell. You learn so much from your fellow industry professionals. Although I think I might have scared Meghan a little when I showed up for our workshop with wine glass in hand. I’ve been told I was brilliant.

Squirt couldn't get enough
of the Hawaiian Shaved Ice.
Next was the Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games and Clan Gathering. I know. It’s not as grand as the Military Tattoo in Scotland, but it’s the closest we can get in the Northwest. Three days of food, games, and pipers. Oh, the pipers. I love a good Celtic tune.

The next weekend we moved from Scotland to Renaissance England to the Midsummer Renaissance Faire. Jousting, corsets, and more snow cones that are as big as your head. And jewelry! I buy all of my jewelry at the faire.
You run into everyone
at the Ren Faire.

The small town where I grew up has an annual festival, and this year they added a book fair. During Augustfest, I met not only some of my community, but also some fantastic authors.

Another annual pilgrimage is the Waterfront Book Festival. Being out on the pier with some of my favorite author friends is always a treat.

It was party time for my friend Kelly at Havana Nights. Dancing, drinking, and cigars!

My first and last cigar.
It wasn't bad, just not for me.
Rounding out August was the Enumclaw Rodeo. But I’ll save that trip for another time. J

So long summer. I’ll miss you.

Until next time!

Addiction - Jennifer Kacey style

I'm addicted to bikinis.
It's true.
Completely addicted.
They make me smile and feel happy and I love wearing them around the house.
Doing dishes in summer? I'll wear a bikini.
Writing in my office or at the kitchen table or on the two person hammock out back? In a bikini.
Gardening? In a bikini.
Cutting the grass? In a bikini.

I think I own twenty or so bikinis. Yeah. Totally addicted.
Was gonna say I'd actually count them but I have a feeling that number is quite a bit higher so I think I'll stick with twenty. That's a nice round number. Don't you think??

So what about everyone else?
What is a really odd thing you're addicted to??
Share!!
They all say the first step to getting help is admission.

My name is Jennifer Kacey and I'm addicted to........"OMG bikinis are on sale this weekend!!"

Need something to wet your whistle and get your addiction fix for the day??
May I suggest a delicious bite out of the Members Only series........ :P

Lazy Sunday- Movie Time!

The heat wave continues in the northwest, and instead of working on my next  project, my girls and I spent the day broadening their classic movie knowledge. In other words, it was too hot to think, so we watched movies all day. Hey, it's Seattle. We don't do air conditioning up here. :)

Over the last few years, I've been introducing my girls to the movies I loved as a kid, and as an adult too. Today's offerings were Return to Me with David Duchovny and Minnie Driver. I cry at least three times. Father of the Bride parts one and two, and Teen Wolf. A few weekends ago it was That Thing You Do and Mrs. Doubtfire, and before that was True Lies. Still makes me laugh. Oh, and there was Footloose, While You Were Sleeping, Sleepless in Seattle, Notting Hill, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

It's fun watching them enjoy my favorite movies from when I was their age, especially when technology comes into play. "Why didn't they call them on their cell phone?" Is a question I hear often. I also like to watch them work out the plot and conflicts as the movie plays out. Squid, my oldest, is really good at guessing what is going to happen next.

Since the Chicklets are on the younger side, I have to wait a bit longer to share my favorite move (besides The Avengers) which is Four Weddings and a Funeral. And I realized Squid is about the same age I was when I first saw Dirty Dancing, which is a frightening thought. Still debating when is the best time to share that movie, but Patrick Swayze is so dreamy. I may have to watch that one by myself.

Tomorrow I'll be back to grindstone and rewriting everything I had written for the next installment in the Elite Metal series, but for now I'm trying to talk Squid out of watching Teen Wolf Too. Yeah, there are lots of other movies I'd rather return to than that one.

Stay cool y'all!

The Sweet Life

So I had planned to do a blog entitled Decadent Desserts this week. In preparation for it, my youngest son and I baked a chocolate chip cookie, Oreo, brownie bar. Have you seen these on the Internet? You can find the recipe here: Recipe

If you haven’t seen it and you don’t feel like clicking over to the recipe it’s essentially one dessert bar that has a layer of chocolate chip cookies, one layer of Oreo double stuffed cookies topped off with a layer of brownies.

Since my oldest is at camp this week, I’ve been teaching my youngest kiddo how to cook. This project looked challenging (since we made the cookie dough from scratch and there are several different steps he’d have to keep track of) and the pay off seemed large. Hello! It’s like the ultimate dessert. Put mousse in that puppy and it’s got all of my favorite things. And he agreed. He’s always liked to cook so it wasn’t exactly twisting his arm.

So we did it! We got it all assembled and cooked and put it out for the cooling time. But then I had a doctor’s apt. I needed to go to. Like, my doctor is to the point of only giving me my medicine one month at a time until I went to see her kind of need to go. Which was okay because the dessert takes two hours to cool. Yep, you read that right, two whole hours!

I put the dessert up where our doggies couldn’t get it and we headed into town with visions of sweet yumminess in our heads. Two hours later (my doctor was behind and I hit rush hour traffic on the way home) we returned to find the brownies on the floor, one quarter of it dessert bar gone, and my oldest dog with two deep lacerations on his paw.

Poor dears had to be taken to the emergency vet, have their stomachs emptied, and oldest dog had to have his paw stitched up. No brownies for us. We didn’t even get to taste them. My youngest kiddo was devastated.

But a funny thing happened while we were getting ready to go to the vet. My youngest saw how miserable the dogs were and how stressed out I was (I had no idea how much chocolate the dogs had eaten and I didn’t know if the oldest dog had broken his paw so I was pretty worried about them) and my youngest tried to comfort me. As we made our way to the vet he told me that he was certain the doggies hadn’t been eating the brownies for very long or they would’ve gotten more of it. You see, the vet couldn’t get the chocolate out of their stomachs if it’d already digested past that. And, since we’d been gone for like three or four hours there was no telling how long the doggies had been eating that brownie. But my kiddo was certain the vet would be able to help them. And, he told me, we could always make another set of ultimate brownies. Turns out he was absolutely right on all accounts.

So maybe life isn’t always decadent. Sometimes it’s a bit stressful. But if you surround yourself with the right people—people who care about you and want you to be happy, it’s always a sweet.

I’m happy to report that the doggies are doing fine. Oldest dog gets his stitches out Friday and he’s started successfully hobbling around the house. We just need to get his appetite back up. Apparently the brownies ruined him for his kibble! And youngest and I made a truly inspired batch of pretzels. (You can find the recipe here though I did use parmesan cheese on some and cinnamon/sugar on some instead of salt) Can’t wait to see what today holds for our little cooking camp.
