Beaux, Ballrooms, and Battles: A Celebration of Waterloo by Susana Ellis

Beaux, Ballrooms, and Battles:
A Celebration of Waterloo

June 18, 1815 was the day Napoleon Bonaparte's Grande Armée was definitively routed by the ragtag band of soldiers from the Duke of Wellington's Allied Army in a little Belgian town called Waterloo. The cost in men's lives was high—22,000 dead or wounded for the Allied Army and 24,000 for the French. But the war with Napoleon that had dragged on for a dozen years was over for good, and the British people once more felt secure on their island shores.

The bicentenary of the famous battle seemed like an excellent opportunity to use that setting for a story, and before I knew it, I had eight other authors eager to join me, and to make a long story short, on April 1, 2015 our Waterloo-themed anthology was released to the world.

You are all invited to:

About Lost and Found Lady

On April 24, 1794, a girl child was born to an unknown Frenchwoman in a convent in Salamanca, Spain. Alas, her mother died in childbirth, and the little girl—Catalina—was given to a childless couple to raise.

Eighteen years later…the Peninsular War between the British and the French wages on, now perilously near Catalina’s home. After an afternoon yearning for adventure in her life, Catalina comes across a wounded British soldier in need of rescue. Voilà! An adventure! The sparks between them ignite, and before he returns to his post, Rupert promises to return for her.

But will he? Catalina’s grandmother warns her that some men make promises easily, but fail to carry them out. Catalina doesn’t believe Rupert is that sort, but what does she know? All she can do is wait…and pray.

But Fate has a few surprises in store for both Catalina and Rupert. When they meet again, it will be in another place where another battle is brewing, and their circumstances have been considerably altered. Will their love stand the test of time? And how will their lives be affected by the outcome of the conflict between the Iron Duke and the Emperor of the French?

September 14, 1793
A beach near Dieppe, France

“I don’t like the look of those clouds, monsieur,” Tobias McIntosh said in fluent French to the gray-bearded old man in a sailor hat waiting impatiently near the rowboat that was beginning to bob more sharply with each swell of the waves. “Are you sure your vessel can make it safely all the way to Newhaven in these choppy seas?”

The old man waved a hand over the horizon. “La tempête, it is not a threat, if we leave immédiatement. Plus tard…” He shrugged. “Je ne sais pas.”

“Please, mon amour,” pleaded the small woman wrapped in a hooded gray cloak standing at his side. “Allow me to stay with you. I don’t want to go to England. I promise I will be prudent.”

A strong gust of wind caught her hood and forced it down, revealing her mop of shiny dark locks. Tobias felt like seizing her hand and pulling her away from the ominous waves to a place of safety where she and their unborn child could stay until the senseless Terreur was over.

“Justine, ma chère, we have discussed this endlessly. There is no place in France safe enough for you if your identity as the daughter of the Comte d’Audet is discovered.” He shivered. “I could not bear it if you were to suffer the same fate at the hands of the revolutionaries as your parents did when I failed to save them.”

She threw her arms around him, the top of her head barely reaching his chin. “Non, mon amour, it was not your fault. You could not have saved them. It was miraculeux that you saved me. I should have died with them.”

She looked up to catch his gaze, her face ashen. “Instead, we met and have had three merveilleux months together. If it is my time to die, I wish to die at your side.”

Tobias felt like his heart was going to break. His very soul demanded that the two of them remain together and yet… there was a price on both their heads, and the family of the Vicomte Lefebre was waiting for him in Amiens, the revolutionaries expected to reach them before midday. It was a dangerous work he was involved in—rescuing imperiled French nobility from bloodthirsty, vengeful mobs—but he had pledged himself to the cause and honor demanded that he carry on. And besides, there was now someone else to consider.

“The child,” he said with more firmness than he felt. “We have our child to consider, now, Justine ma chère. The next Earl of Dumfries. He must live to grow up and make his way in the world.”

Not to mention the fact that Tobias was human enough to wish to leave a child to mark his legacy in the world—his and Justine’s. He felt a heaviness in his heart that he might not live long enough to know this child he and Justine had created together. He could not allow his personal wishes to undermine his conviction. Justine and the child must survive.

Justine’s blue eyes filled with tears. “But I cannot! I will die without you, mon cher mari. You cannot ask it of me!”

“Justine,” he said, pushing away from her to clasp her shoulders and look her directly in the eye. “You are a brave woman, the strongest I have ever known. You have survived many hardships and you can survive this. Take this letter to my brother in London, and he will see to your safety until the time comes that I can join you. My comrades in Newhaven will see that you are properly escorted.”

He handed over a letter and a bag of coins. “This should be enough to get you to London.”

After she had reluctantly accepted and pocketed the items beneath her cloak, he squeezed her hands.

“Be sure to eat well, ma chère. You are so thin and my son must be born healthy.”

She gave him a feigned smile. “Our daughter is the one responsible for my sickness in the mornings… I do not believe she wishes me to even look at food.”

She looked apprehensively at the increasingly angry waves as they tossed the small boat moored rather loosely to a rock on the shore and her hands impulsively went to her stomach.

“Make haste, monsieur,” the old sailor called as he peered anxiously at the darkening clouds. “We must depart now if we are to escape the storm. Bid your chère-amie adieu maintenant or wait for another day. I must return to the bateau.”

“Tobias,” she said, her voice shaking.

He wondered if he would ever again hear her say his name with that adorable French inflection that had drawn him from their first meeting.

“Go, Justine. Go to my family and keep our child safe. I promise I will join you soon.”

He scooped her up in his arms and carried her toward the dinghy, trying to ignore her tears. The old sailor held the boat as still as he could while Tobias placed her on the seat and kissed her hard before striding back to the shore, each footstep heavier than the last.

He studied the darkening sky as the sailor climbed in the boat. “You are sure it is safe?”

“La Chasseresse, she is très robuste. A few waves will not topple her, monsieur.”

“Je t’aime, mon amour,” she said to him plaintively, her chin trembling.

“Au revoir, ma chère,” he said, trying to smile, although his vision was blurring from tears.

Will I ever see her again?

He stood watching as the dinghy made its way slowly through the choppy sea to the larger ship anchored in the distance, grief-stricken and unable to concentrate on anything but his pain. When the ship finally sailed off into the horizon, he fell to his knees and prayed as he had never done before for the safety of his beloved. He remained in that position until drops of rain on his face reminded him of the Lefebre family waiting for him in Amiens.

With a deep breath, he rose and made his way to the nearby forest, where his horse waited, tied to a tree.

“Come, my friend. We have a long, wet journey ahead of us.”

Setting foot in the stirrup, he swung his leg over the saddle and urged the horse to a gallop, feeling his heart rip into pieces with every step away from his beloved.

It's My Birthday!

My mom created this bit of loveliness.
Yep. Last Thursday April 2nd was my birthday. I get very squiggly when it comes to birthdays. On the one hand I enjoy celebrating the day of my birth. However... I hate aging. Hate it. I will not age quietly into the night and will fight it every step of the way.

Rebecca made me a cake!
Some people say I shouldn't worry about growing older. With age comes wisdom and la-dee-da. I still detest it. Why? I have found that people as a society judge each other too harshly on age. There are expectations associated when you've reached a certain age. Oh, you should have done this by now. Married by now. Your career should be here, you should/should not dress like that, and your life as a whole should be there. I do not like that. I want to be me and not have to change because I've reached a certain number of years. If I am to change and evolve as a person, it will be based on experiences and not because the calender of my life has cycled so many times.

The girls know me so well.
Dutch Apple Pietini. Yep.
How did I celebrate without focusing on the growing older aspect? With friends and family. Just as one should. On Friday my writer friends converged with my non-writing friends for drinks and laughter. Most of that laughter was directed at me when I enjoyed one cocktail too many. Don't worry, I had a designated driver, and I wasn't sloppy drunk, only incredibly tipsy. Then on Sunday my family combined Easter with birthdays as my sister and father also have a birthday this week. Nothing crazy. No bashes to end all bashes. Just lots of fun with the people I love

So to my family I say thank you. To Anna Richland, Ronlyn Howe, Rebecca Neumann, Gwen Mitchell, and Kathi Myers, thank you for celebrating with me and being my
friends. I appreciate you more than you could possibly imagine.

Cheers! And here's to another year!

Gift of Winter by Lia Daivs

From time to time I write short free reads from my worlds and post them to my blog. This is one of the first ones I did and is about the hero and heroine from Winter Eve, Ashwood Falls prequel. Enjoy

Gift of Winter
An Ashwood Falls free read

Danica Welsh lit the last candle around the living room and scanned the small cabin as she bit her bottom lip. She never thought she’d be celebrating the first year anniversary of her mating. Hell she never dreamed she’d find a mate. A year ago she lived in this very cabin, which was located on the edge of the den, far enough away that she could be alone.
Now she was mated to a wonderful, caring, and loyal human male that she’d surrendered her heart and soul to.
Nevan was her world. He’d also brought her out of her self-pity and made her see that her scars weren’t what everyone saw when they looked at her. Accepting that fact, she gave up on hiding out from her Pack and work toward healing. Shay’s magickal potions helped bring back some of the feeling in her hand, making it possible for Dani to work as she was born to. As the leopard Pack Healer.
There was only one thing missing in her life.
After this weekend, she hoped to quiet that little nagging voice of her leopard…and her mother-in-law.
Her cell rang, making her jump. She picked it up from the kitchen counter and smiled at the name on the screen.
Shay. Her best friend.
“Hello, dear.”
“Hi! I’m so excited for you.”
Dani walked over to the couch and sat. “Well, I’m scared to death.”
“Don’t be. By the end of the weekend, every part of your body will ache in all the right ways.” Shay broke out into a fit of giggles.
Dani laughed. “What if he doesn’t want…?”
“Oh hush. He will. Don’t you ever doubt that. Now I called to give you a heads up. Nev is heading home early, which means you better be ready.”
Dani’s heart rate kicked up and the butterflies in her belly swarmed. “Okay. Thanks.”
“You will have a wonderful weekend with your mate. Stop worrying. I’ll see you on the flip side.”
Dani laughed again and said her good-byes to her bestie. She couldn’t imagine a life without her friends and extended family. Yet, she longed for a family of her own. Until now, she didn’t think it would ever be possible.
Nevan changed all that. Now it was her turn to gift him with something.
A family.
***
Nevan entered his home expecting his mate to greet him like she did every day, but the house was silent.
“Dani,” he called out, then walked farther into the living room.
He was about to drop his keys on the coffee table when he noticed a note. Dread cut through him. He knew this was coming. She’d said she would be going through her heat cycle soon. A wave of sadness washed over him.
Dani had said before that she wasn’t ready for children and Nevan respected she wishes. It didn’t mean that he had to like it.
Picking up the note, he unfolded it and read.
Forget everything you think you know upon finding this note. First, I love you with my heart, soul, and body. You are my world and my hero. Second, I’m entering my heat cycle and will be at the cabin for the weekend.
If you dare to be ravished by a hormonal leopard for the next three days, come join me.
Love always,
Dani
Nevan’s heart stopped for a long moment. He reread the note several times before it really sank in. He stood and rushed to the door, flung it open, and jumped at the sight of Blaine standing on his front porch.
Nevan shook his head. “I have to go. Whatever it is can wait until Monday.” He paused and thought for a moment. “No make that Wednesday.”
Pushing his way past the Alpha, Nevan damn near ran down the porch steps and to his car. Only Blaine’s words stopped him half way there.
“I know a faster way to get to your female.”
This was the only time Nevan welcomed the chance to be teleported by Blaine. “How did you know?”
Blaine shrugged. “Shay told me.”
Nevan chuckled. “Figures. I love that sister of yours.”
Blaine smiled. “Yeah, me too. Even though she’s still a brat.”
Nevan shook his head and moved to stand next to the Alpha. Blaine gripped his bicep, then with a flash of white light they dematerialized.
Bracing one hand against a large oak, Nevan took deep, slow breaths. He’d never get use to teleportation. It was so disorienting that he felt ill for a few moments after.
He glanced at Blaine, then straightened to his full height. “I’m fine. You can leave now.”
Blaine gave a low chuckle as he flashed away.
Nevan stared at the small cabin where his new life started almost a year ago. He was about to start a new one. He took the steps two at a time and when he reached the door, it opened. His beautiful and amazing mate stood in a sheer black, floor-length night gown. Her strawberry blond hair hung loose around her shoulders.
She looked to the sky and sniffed the air. A wide smile spread across her face, enhancing her beauty even more. “Looks like we may be snowed in.”
He stepped into her, snaked an arm around her waist and tugged her to him so their bodies pressed together. Too bad he had his clothes on. “I like being snowed in with you.”
She didn’t speak, she just peered into his eyes. He could feel her nervousness and a hint of fear. “What is it?”
“Are you sure you want to start a family with me?”
He pulled his head back to study her features. “Of course. Why would you ever doubt that?”
She averted her gaze. “I don’t know. It’s not like you fought over my decision to wait.”
He wrapped both arms around her, walked her a few steps back, and closed the door behind them. “I didn’t want to push you. I figured we have another few hundred years. But I was going to start leaving hints around the house after the first century.”
She laughed and squeezed him tight. “I love you, Nevan Matthews.”

He kissed her quick and hard before replying. “I love you too, Danica Welsh-Mathews.”

Anna Alexander Does the Emerald City Comic Con

The 2015 Emerald City Comic Con was insane. 80,000 people, over 200 hundred hours of workshops and panels, and exhibitor space that goes on forever. It’s Halloween and Christmas bundled up in three days of awesome, and I was a part of it.

Yep, this year I had the opportunity to be a player in the action and moderate several workshops in the Writer’s Block section of programing. I got to hang with authors Holly Black, Peter V. Brett and RJ Terrel, among many others, and talk about different topics in the writing world like pitching an idea, writing magic, and diversity in commercial fiction.

Seriously!
I also attended several of the celebrity panels and got my shopping on. I scored several charms, a new corset (of course) and super cool nail art I’m going to wear to the RT Convention. Adamantium nails- Score!

Who's ready to learn how to pitch?

Some of the fantastic costumes.

Haley Atwell said Chris Evan’s lips are soft and he smells really good. J She also spoke very eloquently about feminism, but, you know,  Chris Evans.

One of my purchases.

My first panel. Writing Magical McGuffins with Holly Black, HL Reasby, and Peter V. Brett.

Don't you love these Lego men? And of course, Stan Lee is represented.

Gina Torres –I think the power of your femininity can move you just as far as a set of balls. (Preach!)

Clark Gregg- For those of you who write Coulson/Thor/Hawkeye fanfic. Keep writing it. He thinks it’s funny, especially when the artists draw him with bigger muscles than he actually has. Also, I love it when an actor knows his show and is just as excited about the work as the fans. So attractive.
Did you know Anthony Mackie was roommates with Lee Pace while at Julliard? His stories about his early acting years are funny.

Oh, Captain my Captain.
John Barrowman is hysterical. If you have the chance to see him at a Con, go!

Get your copy today!
Next year the event will be four days. FOUR! I’m starting the countdown until next year now. J

Guest Post: Author Jane Leopold Quinn

Passion/Retribution/Love
Her Hero
by Jane Leopold Quinn

These two books are some of the most erotic I've written. In the recent years, my stories have lightened up, become more mainstream with hot love scenes. So when I re-read these early books, I was very pleasantly reminded with how much I loved writing them.

Passion/Retribution/Love

The background

Several years ago, I tried a NaNoWriMo.  NaNo is write a 50,000 word book in a month.  It's usually held in November of every year, but now there are NaNos in other months.  I divided 50,000 by 30 days to get 1,667 words to be written every day to meet the goal.  In NaNo, you write flat out without any self-editing.  JUST WRITE!  I finished with 2 days to spare.  Whew.

The inspiration for this was the cutest coach house I passed by every day on my walk.  I love dollhouses and although this was a full size house, it was still tiny but just the right size for one person.  So, I had a home, now I needed characters.  A Chicago actress and a Chicago cop seemed interesting.  Then I had to brainstorm names.  I tend to come up quickly with names so Sam Bolt and Liz Aspen were born.

After expansion, the book became Undercover Lover and was published by Siren.  I have the rights back, renamed it, and gave it a new cover.

Here's the blurb for Passion/Retribution/Love:  Free spirited actress Liz Aspen can't resist masturbating to the fantasy of her gorgeous, hunky next door neighbor. If he were only there in the bedroom with her, she wouldn't need Mr. Fake-Nine-Inch-Cock. Sam Bolt, loner and secretive undercover cop, gets an eyeful when he accidentally spies on his neighbor from his window to hers. It's a shame what she's doing to herself—when he could do it much better!

Their lives entwine when he saves her life, but she's in further danger when his past meets his present. Sam hates the pain he's caused, but can't stay away from her. He craves the promise of a normal life with a soft, willing woman like Liz who doesn't have to fight torturously dark demons. Addicted to his powerful lovemaking, Liz finds him as compelling as she is confused by the mystery of what he's not telling her.

Will she still love him when he finally tells her the whole truth? Can Sam accept that his past actions don't need to destroy a future with a woman who has proven her strength—emotionally and physically?

Excerpt
Liz has been taken hostage by Sam's enemy.
She survived the danger inside her house but
now they're outside the front door
surrounded by cops and emergency workers…

"Enough of this chit chat. We're coming out. That SUV'd better be in position, or she's dead right now, right in front of you." Dominguez slid his left arm around her neck and squeezed, forcing her toward the door.
Liz jerked and fought, afraid of passing out, this time from the pressure of his arm around her neck. Flashing stars danced in her vision, and she couldn't get a deep breath. Dominguez held her upright, because he needed her as a shield. He opened the front door, and before stepping out, transferred his gun from the hand at her neck back to his right hand.
The bright lights blinded her. She turned her head away. Giant spotlights shone glaringly on the house. A dozen police cars, fire engines, and ambulances, all with their lights flashing, dotted the street. A helicopter droned ominously above them. If she'd been scared before, this was worse. Soon everything would be all over. Either she'd be dead now or dead later out in the country. In no way did she believe he'd let her go.
The police ranged haphazardly in front of them, the SUV close, driver's side door yawning open and waiting. She did not want to get in there. Closing her eyes, she prayed whatever happened would happen fast. He held the gun to her temple. The cold metal felt savage against her skin. She was defenseless with her hands taped behind her back.
Open your eyes, Liz. Look at me. Look at me, baby.
In her head. The words were in her head. At first they didn't mean anything, just low sounds beneath all the other noise.
Look at me.
Sam.
Liz, baby, open your eyes.
She cranked her eyes open a slit, saw the thick arm cloaked in dark wool imprisoning her neck. Her lashes lifted, she let her gaze roam under the level of the lights, the cops, the cop cars, back down to the arm restraining her. These might be the last things she ever saw… A strange peace took over. It was out of her control.
Look at me, love. Look away from him. Look at me.
She didn't think she could be any more terrified. If she died, could she do it with dignity? Did that even matter? Sam. She found his face in the crowd, their eyes locked. He was so beautiful, the sweet and sensual memories came back to her. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
She gagged but was too frightened to moan. She wanted to scream and never stop but was too terrified to make a sound. She lost Sam in the crowd. Her gaze flicked desperately from face to face. It looked like a scene from a movie. A scene out of a nightmare. Surely this many people could save her. She struggled, testing his hold.
Dominguez tightened his arm across her throat, the gun's mouth lethal on her forehead.
There, she found Sam again. The blades of the helicopter still thwapped overhead, and the police radios still squawked. Everyone waited for Dominguez to make his move. She wished something would happen. Just to get it over with.

Her Hero

The second erotic short I ever wrote was intended for a Whiskey Creek Press Torrid anthology titled Lust. In that antho, the story was Mercenary Desires. It was republished by Siren and is now self-pubbed with a new title and new cover.

The inspiration for this hot story was something not very "hot" at all. It was winter and cough medications were advertised on TV. One particular commercial caught my eye. A unattractive fellow coughed all day long, irritating his co-workers. Someone offered him a cough drop and poof!, he turned into a non-coughing hunk. A story popped/poofed! into my head. An ugly, bearded, beat up looking man rescues a beautiful woman from danger. Hint: he cleans up nicely. *:-* kiss

Here's the blurb to Her Hero:  Rowdy Pierce-warrior. Sara Stewart-artist. Macho mercenary rescues posh jewelry designer. Their lives collide in an spectacular rescue and escape across the Egyptian desert. Sara falls for her sexy, body-to-die-for hero and makes the first move. Rowdy, fascinated by the luscious, sweet-bodied, free-spirited woman he saved, takes what Sara offers. He doesn’t expect to lose his heart. Will their lust turn to something deeper back in the real world?

And an excerpt

“Not here.”
“Where?” His voice was an embarrassing breathless, husky whisper.
“My office…big couch.”
“Thank you, Lord.” He swept her up—he loved doing that—charged through the doorway to her office, kicked the door shut, and dropped her down on the sofa. The little devil lay there beaming up at him with those blue eyes, not looking icy at all. Rowdy knelt beside the couch. “Take this off,” he ordered as he pulled her sweater and tank top all the way off over her head.
“Sonofabitch.” His breath caught in his throat. He was afraid his heart would stop.
“You don’t like it?”
Her falsely innocent question kicked it back in. “Like?” he gasped. Glancing at her pleased expression, he dragged his gaze back to her breathtaking breasts. His tiny feminine side appreciated that her bra was spectacular, the colors shimmering into each other, the lace barely covering her. But he could give a shit. The huge masculine side wanted to taste the soft, cushiony skin, preferably…now. He lowered his head and sucked her nipple between his teeth.
She responded with a sharp cry.
Right through the lace, he rocked it, lashing the tip with his tongue.
She twisted and surged, her fingers in his hair, gripping his head. “The other one,” she begged with little kitten-like mews.
He was a good boy; he did as he was told. With a final nip, he lifted his head and whispered, “The jeans.”
She nodded frantically. “Uh huh…”
He slid them down her long, beautiful legs, right off over the sexy stilettos. “Fuck.” The panties matched her bra, blonde pussy hair peeping through the lace over her mound. “Jesus, sweetheart, you’re killin’ me,” he groaned. “Long legs, sexy underwear, and stilettos? I’ve died and gone to heaven.”
Sara groaned. Her chest rose and fell sharply. “I want you inside me now. Slow later,” she ordered, gripping the front of his shirt.
“Yes, ma’am.” He stood, divested himself of his shirt, boots, and jeans, and after peeling her out of her bra and panties, knelt between her thighs on the cushions. “Leave the shoes on,” he commanded. He didn’t give a crap if those spikes scratched his ass to ribbons.
“Rowdy, I want you…now.” She clutched his arms, pulling him toward her.

Besides loving these two stories, I've discovered the pleasures of making my own covers. The Jimmy Thomas site romancenovelcovers.com has been a gold mine of possibilities for me. I've used pre-made covers from that site, and now I've begun buying stock images and adding my own title and author name. I've also used iStock.com and periodimages.com. My covers are simple, but I think pretty effective. Her Hero's cover is downright scorching hot.  *>:) devil My eyeballs are smiling.

About me

Sensual fantasies were locked in my mind for years until a friend said, "Why don't you write them down?" Why not, indeed? One spiral notebook, a pen and the unleashing of my imagination later, and here I am with more than a dozen books published. The craft of writing erotic romance has become my passion and my niche in life. I love every part of the creative process—developing characters, designing the plot, even drawing the layout of physical spaces from my stories. My careers have been varied—third grade school teacher, bookkeeper, secretary—none of which gave me a bit of inspiration. But now I'm lucky enough to write romance full time—the best job in the universe! And I'm fortunate enough to have found my own happily ever after husband.

I couldn't make this stuff up

Tomorrow, April 3, my book Love Beyond Time (Outsiders #1) is rereleasing.  For the second time.  Let me tell you the story of this book.  And, yes, all of this happened.  And if I had tried to make it up in one my books, you'd all be pinging me for being unrealistic.

Love Beyond Time is the first book I ever wrote. It took several editing attempts to make it right and it was eventually published in 2009.  The publisher and I had a hard time on some levels and eventually decided to part ways.  I took the book back and in 2011 republished the book with another publishing house.

Things seemed to take off pretty well after that.  I wrote three more books and had progressed the series to book 5 (there will be 9 total) when I started to notice I wasn't getting paid.  Now, I know this is not my bestselling series.  Readers tend to prefer me to write wolves, which I love doing. But, every once in a while the muse needs what it needs and I have to do what it tells me.

Being me, it never occurred to me that there might be a problem with the publisher and not my sales.  To make a long story very short, the publisher ended up fleeing the country with Federal Marshalls on his tail.  I was not the only author owed tons of cash.

The books once again fell back to me.  I wasn't sure what was going to happen at this point. However, I have finally found a home for The Outsiders again.  And I'm thinking third time is a charm.

So, without further ado, Love Beyond Time (Outsiders #1) is rereleasing tomorrow.  I would love it if you all checked it out.  Give my non wolfies a try.
