Halloween is Almost Here

It’s only a little over a week until all the kids are out trick-or-treating. On Halloween night, I like to light the candle in the pumpkin, turn off the lights, and put on my favorite Halloween movies.

There are tons of great ones out there to choose from, but here are 5 of my favorites:

1. The Crow (1994)—One of my favorite movies of all time and probably the one I’ve watched the most. It’s so dark, yet so hopeful. Brandon Lee’s performance is incredible. Great cast and story, plenty of action, and one fantastic soundtrack.

2. Underworld (2003)—Vampires and lycans are at war. Selene, a vampire warrior, makes the mistake of falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.

3. Dracula Untold (2014)—A fresh look at the traditional Dracula story. I love this movie. I mean, what’s not to love about Luke Evans as Vlad Tepes, the prince who must become a monster feared by his own people in order to obtain the power needed to protect them.

4. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)—As promised, this movie closely follows Stoker’s version of Dracula. Great film. Gary Oldman plays a scary and seductive Dracula.

5. Lost Boys (1987)—It’s hard to believe this movie is 30 years old, but it holds up. It’s one of  my favorite vampire movies of all time. And the soundtrack is amazing.

I  know this is a top 5 list, but I have to mention Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp (1999) and the Disney animated version (1949). I love them both. The animated story is beautifully crafted. And while the Depp version of the story goes off the rails near the end, I still enjoy it.

Halloween is also a great time to read a paranormal book. If you’re looking for one, be sure to check out Eternal Brothers, book four of the Dalakis Passion vampire series.

Celebrities vs. Authors

Let me start by saying I love television, movies, books, music, etc. I love to follow certain people on Facebook and Instagram but these days it's becoming increasingly harder to do so. It seems like celebrities are more concerned about getting free stuff and promoting certain products hoping you'll purchase them with their special "code" than actually sharing their lives with people.

For example, I'm obsessed with the Bachelor shows on ABC. Absolutely obsessed. So naturally I tend to follow my favorites on Instagram and Twitter. I notice though as soon as these people hit a certain number of followers the promos begin. I scroll along on Instagram and I notice post after post of these Bachelor alumni pushing the Fab Fit Fun box, Diffey EyeWear, Hello Fresh, and SugarBear vitamins just to name a few. Now don't get me wrong, I understand that they are getting these products completely free and therefore must promote them or else bye bye freebies but would it kill them to limit the promo posts to once a week at most? I mean I don't blame them I'd love to be getting free stuff too just for showing my face on a television show but there is a certain limit of promo posts this girl can handle and yes I've unfollowed a few because of this alone. I want to see them, their daily lives, hell even their dogs, NOT PROMOS.  And yes sadly I've fallen into one or two of these promo posts unfortunately. NEVER AGAIN! Until next time.....

Now authors I don't see doing this at all. Not even the USA or New York Times Bestsellers. Authors aren't trying to get free stuff (unless it's books) and they don't promo anything but themselves or other authors and I think that's refreshing. They aren't trying to push anything on you or giving you a special "code" to go purchase something that they got for free. No. They are working their asses off trying to write, trying to edit, trying to get their stories out there. They have no time for silly promos. Their energy goes into the world they are in which is books. They'll promo fellow authors which is fantastic! Every author needs people talking about their books. That's how they get noticed. I follow quite a few authors and/or bloggers on Instagram and Twitter and every post I see is just them, their daily life, their writing nooks, a few book promos and I LOVE IT! I will admit that I follow some big bloggers in the book community and sometimes they post for certain subscription boxes but I will say the boxes are actually book subscription boxes and they actually talk about the books that are in them not just "Use this code to get yours today". As a writer ( I won't even call myself an author) I have nothing but respect for these authors and bloggers.

Is it too much to ask for those 'celebrities' to post more about their actual lives? Some are private and I get that but if you are not going to share then why are you even on social media?

Authors are an open book. *Pun intended* They share their daily lives, their struggles, and their books. It's awesome to follow along with them and it doesn't feel like they are just trying to push something on you because they aren't. Unless there's a book they just happen to fall in love with of course.

This is something that has increased a lot within the past year or so. Granted it's my decision whether or not to participate which is why I've unfollowed many people lately because of the constant promos. I'm happy to report I have yet to unfollow an author because like I said earlier they don't do it.

So in this case of celebrity vs. author the authors win! ;-)  Keep posting writing buddies!

The Lure of a vampire

What is it about vampire’s that is so intriguing? Is it their power? Immortality? Strength? Whatever it is, vampires have drawn people in for centuries. Let’s have a look at what a vampire is and how it’s evolved into the most talked about fictional characters.

Vampires are most often dead. In past lore, vampires were created by one vampire drinking the blood of a human, killing them. The human would then be buried, assumed dead, and would rise some time later as a vampire.

 Another way a vampire is created is a vampire drinking the blood from their victim until their heartbeat slowed, then forcing the victim to drink the creators blood. The victim would then be a vampire.

Another belief is that a vampire could bite a person, but not kill them. The victim may carry on living as a human for years, but upon their death, would then become a vampire.

Where did the idea for vampires begin you might ask? Some say it began with Dracula. Vlad (the Impaler) 'Tepes' Dracula, who lived between 1430 and 1476. We’ve all heard the horror that Vlad inflicted on his victims, including impaling them, blinding, skinning, castrating, dismemberment and much more. It is said that Vlad never claimed to be immortal, which was evident when he was killed and his head presented as a trophy to the Sultan of Constantinople. So where did Dracula come from in regards to Vlad? The peasants of the time painted him in the supernatural light, bringing forth the rumor that he was of the undead, but it wasn't until Bram Stoker created his vampire Dracula that the blood sucking damned vampire was popularized.

The ancient vampires of Eastern Europe describe their vampires as half-rotted corpses crawling from their grave to which they must rest in each night. In modern lore, the image of a vampire is quite different. Gone is the shriveled, impish fiend worn by the ages as depicted as Nosferatu and in its place the vampire has become somewhat of a creature of great beauty with pale skin and fanged teeth.

Then we have Bela Lugosi who the mere mention of his name makes a person think of Dracula. Lugosi’s vampire was suave, wore a tuxedo and long black opera cape. His voice held a thick, rich Hungarian accent that was thought to be sexy. Bela Lugosi posed an image of the vampire that would be remembered and imitated even in such characters as The Count on Sesame Street or even the cereal Count Chocula.

However, there was one thing missing. Bela didn’t have fangs. Although Bram Stoker’s novel mentions peculiar sharp white teeth, it wasn't until late 1950’s when the fangs began their popularity. Today, however, fangs are the norm for vampires, as is drinking blood.

Buffy the vampire Slayer really drew people’s attention to vampires and why not. Angel was one sexy vamp, but instead of running around killing innocent victims, he chose to “Help the helpless” And what about Spike. He started out as a sniveling human, turned to a vampire and became a legendary vampire who loved to torture his victims. But it took Buffy to tame his soul and turn him into a kind-hearted vampire willing to sacrifice his life for the world.

Then we have Stephanie Meyers portrayal of vampires as “sparkling”.

So is it any wonder vampires have become revered over the centuries. They have gone from decayed, rotting grave dwellers to suave, sophisticated creatures with a conscience. And we can’t get enough of them. Each decade, it seems a new vampire is created with its own powers or flaws.

I am not immune to the lure of vampires. My Darkness series came about as a thought. What would happen if the sun was blotted out in a town with vampires? Mayhem of course, and so book one, Seducing the Darkness was created and seven books followed.  My vampires don’t all have powers, only the pure blooded original vampire’s posses the ability to transform, transport, and use mind control. The more diluted the vampire is, the fewer abilities they have. Sunlight does not make them go poof, but instead scorches their skin to produce boils, which are extremely painful. They can be killed by a stake to the heart, or decapitation. And they do not sleep in graves or in coffins.

Whatever the lure is, vampires have been around for centuries, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be going anywhere anytime soon.

Demons and Leaf Peeping?

Greetings all! Today’s my first day on Decadent Divas and I’m stoked! 

Here’s a little about me... For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with all things paranormal. From the time I was a little girl, my vivid imagination led me on ghost hunting missions with my invisible friend, Frank. As an adult, I’ve evolved that rich fantasy life into a love of travel and exploration that has sent me on exciting expeditions from New England to Rome in search of old cemeteries and underground burial sites. While Koivu and Micki are settling in to their crazy lives in Brooklyn, I'm heading to Montreal, Canada for some cooler weather and some epic leaf peeping with my buds. With any luck at all, I'll be able to wear a sweater! I love the cold so much that my books are very often set against a backdrop of snowy winter. Book one in this series is called "Vanek." Vanek and Dylan end up snowed in for days. They got bored. Sparks flew. Here's what happened:

“Hey, check this out,” Vanek called to Dylan as he set a box down in the middle of the bedroom.

“Oooh, that looks interesting.” She knelt beside it, running her fingers over the intricately-carved pattern. “Pretty.” Tapping the latch impatiently, she said, “Come on. Open it up. Let’s see what’s in it.”

The shiny brass latch came open easily. Moving as one, they peered into the box. “Well, I’ll be triple damned.” Her dumbfounded face probably mirrored his. “Looks like someone’s into bondage.”

The words lay between them like an unexploded grenade.

He was almost afraid to look at her again. Would she be horrified? Shocked? He braved a glance and breathed a sigh of relief. She looked more surprised than shocked. This day was getting better and better.

“Let’s see what we’ve got here.” He started to unpack and the air between them seemed to thicken with each item he removed. As he rummaged through the box, he felt his pulse thud with sudden lust. Holy hell, the fuck fairies were smiling on him. Between the snowed in cabin, the smoking hot woman, and the box of toys, he was surely living a wet dream.

“Handcuffs, silks, and leather restraints.” He put them in a neat pile, watching her reaction closely. She hadn’t said a word, but examined each item intently once he put them down. Next, he started on the toys, holding each up as he named it. “Flogger. Paddle. Ball gag.”

She’d been trying to hold it back, but she finally choked on a laugh, and picked up the ball gag. Sending him a mock stern look, she warned, “Don’t even think about it.”

“How about these little treats?” He held up the last three items. “Dildo. Lube. Butt plug.”

“Butt plug?” she repeated, trying not to laugh again. Shaking her head, she picked it up and turned it this way and that, clearly trying to imagine how it worked.

He plucked it from her fingers and held it up in its usual position. “It goes like this. In your ass.”

She gaped at him, so he added helpfully, “That’s what the lube’s for.”

“You’re an idiot. I know what it is. I just haven’t seen one in person.” She added, “And don’t get any ideas. I don’t trust you that much.”

“You just hurt my feelings, babe.” He bounced the plug from hand to hand. “Are you sure? There’s plenty of lube.”

HALLOWEEN MADNESS

Halloween is my favorite time of year. I start planning for it on November 1st. I live to scare the crap out of the neighborhood kids with my scary, gory decorations. It builds their character.

This month I thought I'd do something fun by posting a few costumes I think are awesome. All of them were found on Pinterest, the site where I can spend hours upon hours doing "research." (ahem)

I'm not exactly sure how one walks around in this baby without tripping, but kudos for originality.
