Blog Spot & Author Giveaway

Stone Guardian

I read this amazing book by my wonderful friend Danielle Monsch. The cover art was the first thing that drew me to the story. And if you are looking for a new series readers, this book is a must read. Terak is a super sexy Gargoyle. Now I will admit, I never thought I would think of a Gargoyle along those terms, but this guy is strong, confident and I wouldn’t mind him wrapping those wings around me. Larissa is also a tough female heroine and their chemistry together is compelling. There is also plenty of action and suspense and the story draws you into their world. I’m so glad I took time out to read this book. It was well worth it…

CONTEST!
Danielle Monsch will be stopping by, so please say hi to her. Also, she will be giving away a copy of her book to one lucky reader. It will be announced in the comments section tomorrow night so good luck everyone!!!

Here's a little sneak peak of the Stone Guardian:

Gryphons flying past skyscrapers? Wizards battling it out in coffeehouses? Women riding motorcycles with large swords strapped to their backs? All normal sights since the Great Collision happened twenty-six years ago.

Well, not normal for everyone. Larissa Miller may have been born after the Great Collision, but as a history teacher who lives in the human-only city, she has never come into contact with any other race or species, nor has she wanted to. Her life is as ordinary as it gets - that is, until one day she walks out of her apartment and is attacked by a mob of Zombies, only to be saved by a Gargoyle.

Gargoyles trust no one outside their Clan, but due to a cryptic prophecy, Terak, Leader of the Gargoyles, has been watching over the human woman for months. While he can find no reason why the woman has been singled out, something about her stirs every protective instinct within him. When the attack confirms that the threats against her exist and are real, he convinces Larissa that though their races have never been allies, the best chance of discovering why she has been brought into his world is by working together.

In the course of their investigation Terak becomes entranced by his little human. But when he discovers why Necromancers want her and the great reward that awaits him if he betrays her, he must choose between the welfare of his Clan and not only Larissa's life, but the fate of this New Realm as well.

Tell us about your latest book Stone Guardian.

-         It’s set in an alternate universe which looks like ours (cell phones, cars, computers) but it’s infused with magic and fantasy elements. So you can head out to go to work in your minivan and see a unicorn in the distance. Or you can be standing in line to get your latte and notice the person in front of you happens to be an elf. And yes, sword fights and magic battles do break out.

In Stone Guardian, we have a Gargoyle who was sent by an Oracle to watch over a human woman. The Gargoyle has no idea why he’s been told she’s important – she’s a high-school history teacher and seems clueless about any of dangerous undercurrents going on in their world. But one night she’s attacked by Zombies, and the Gargoyle saves her and realizes that she is involved in something important – whether she knows why or not. The book follows their journey as they join forces to find out why she’s been targeted, and of course (since this is a romance) they start to fall for each other… even though there are several reasons that’s a bad idea, including the fact he’s been promised to someone else.

Love the Gargoyles. Where did the inspiration come from for Stone Guardian?

-         The inspiration for a gargoyle hero came from the TV cartoon series Gargoyles. I loved that show and gargoyles became forever heroic in my eyes because of it.  The inspiration for this big fantasy world came from J.R.R Tolkien. It’s because of him and those who followed who were obviously inspired by him that started in me a real love of fantasy.

How many books do you plan for this series?

-         Oh boy, I have no clue. Minimum seven, not including the short stories and drabbles (and I’m so lying – I know it’s more, I just don’t want to scare anyone). The problem with building a new world is every time you turn around, a new facet emerges you want to explore and write about!

What is your favorite thing about writing?

-         The writing part is character creation. I love making all these new people and see what they’ll do. The favorite part of the business side is hearing from those who like my works.

What do you find that is sexy about a man or a woman?

-         I’m not going to pretend to be so enlightened that I don’t admit to finding strong arms or the nice curve of a derriere sexy  J  but the sexiest thing for me personally is quiet confidence. It’s when people know they’re darn good and they are so confident they don’t care if you know it or not – they just are. That attitude on someone makes me fan myself.

How do you juggle the demands of family and career versus writing?

-         Not well  J It’s one of the reasons I don’t have as many books out as I wish. But I figure it this way – my kids are only going to be young once. Soon they’ll be out with friends and doing their own thing, and they won’t want to be with mom all the time, and when that day comes I’m going to think back to now and remember when I was the center of their world. So I accept the trade-off and hope my readers stick with me.

What advice would you give an aspiring author?

-         Learn the business side of writing, and treat your writing as a business. I know most writers want to sit back and write and not worry about the rest of that stuff, but even if the good ole days of writing existed where someone could do just that, those days don’t exist anymore. You don’t want the regret of signing something you really shouldn’t have, and asking yourself why you didn’t bother to learn basic industry issues when you had the chance.

Do you think writer’s groups and going to conference are important?

-         Groups are very important. You need to find your peers and mentors and figure out your own way in this crazy business. Conferences… they have their place and can be of huge help, but you have to work to make them work for you, and not everyone is built to handle these huge events. So if for either personality or financial reasons you can’t do a conference, don’t beat yourself up over it.

Wine or chocolate, what's your favorite?

-         Chocolate – I really don’t drink wine  J

What’s your favorite pass time?

-         Being with my kids. There is no greater blessing.

Where can readers find you?

We have another guest diva today - please welcome the decadent Erza Bishop!!! Yea!!
There's a whole lot packed into one post for your reading pleasure so sit back and enjoy!!!
♥, Jenn :)

Q&A:
How did you come up with Sigil Fire?
This story began as a writing prompt that didn’t make it into the anthology it was originally intended for. After much more work, I sent it in to the Ylva Halloween anthology and the amazing and wonderful Astrid believed it could be so much more. What was a nine thousand word story became a nearly thirty thousand word novella.
Will there be a sequel?
Yes. Charley, Perry, Sonia and Fae will be back for book two, which has already begun.
Favorite dessert?
Chocolate.Any kind.Anywhere.
Do you have a pet?
Yes. My husband and I have a pack of furry canine children that constantly keep us on our toes.
Favorite place to relax?
That would have to be in bed with a good book, my puppy Tadpole by my side.
Who are some of your favorite urban fantasy or erotic authors?
There are so many! I love Kim Harrison, Lisabet Sarai, Jaye Wells, Red Phoenix, CariSilverwood, DL King, Alison Tyler, Rachel Kramer Bussel, Rhavensfyre, Patricia Briggs, Laura Antoniou…the list goes on and on. If I could be sealed in a room for a year I would never be bored reading these fabulous authors and more.
What are you working on now?
I have several works in progress. I write for the serial, Club Rook and am in the middle of two episodes to finish out the first season. There is also a CYOA for Silkwords, a twisted fairy tale for Decadent and a Halloween tale for my wonderful friends at Ylva. Not to mention the urban fantasy romance I’m up to my knees in for Sci Spanks coming up in a week or so.

What is Sci Spanks?
I’m glad you asked! It is a wonderful event for authors and readers to get together around their love of reading erotic literature. Some spanking may be involved, so warm up your paddles! Check out this link to the Facebook page and consider being an ambassador. More prize opportunities and it is as easy as cut and paste.

Where there’s smoke there’s Hellfire.
Sonia is a succubus with one goal: stay off Hell’s radar. But when succubi start to die, including her sometimes lover, Jeannie, she’s drawn into battle between good and evil.
Fae is a blood witch turned vampire, running a tattoo parlor and trading her craft for blood. She notices that something isn’t right on the streets of her city. The denizens of Hell are restless. With the aid of her nest mate Perry and his partner Charley, she races against time before the next victim falls. The killer has a target in his sights, and Sonia might not live to see the dawn.

Excerpt:
Blood pounded in her temples, and Sonia’s feet hit the pavement. Tears blurred her vision as the reality of what almost happened sunk in. He was the killer, and he knew where she lived. He was a fallen angel.
Turning the corner, she saw the tattoo parlor and picked up her pace. The shadows mocked her from every angle. He would be out there waiting. His oily presence oozed unholy joy at her panic, and she stumbled, almost losing her footing on the uneven sidewalk. Footsteps echoed on the street behind her, and in her panic, she couldn’t distinguish between friend and foe.
The glass doors loomed large, windows covered with posters of the latest trends in piercing and ink.
Pulling maniacally on the door, Sonia let out a howl of frustration to discover it locked. “Son of a bitch! Oh Goddess! Open up!” Tears ran down her face, and she tore at the door, hoping for some weakness that would allow her entry. Something.Anything.
She bit back a sob and staggered backward. It was over. He would find her in moments.
The street had become too quiet and the echo of sinister laughter crept along the edge of darkness. The bastard was playing with her.
Fear shot through Sonia’s body, numb and cold, causing her to yelp as the doors rattled behind her.
The sound of a barking dog came from the interior of the shop.
A voluptuous dark-haired woman leaned out, the bluish light illuminating her features with beams of icy radiance. “If you’re looking for a corner, succubus, you’ve picked the wrong one. Move it along.”
Sonia stepped closer to the door, turning her head into the light. “I’m here to see Fae.” She wrapped her arms around herself, shivering. The T-shirt and jeans had been warm enough earlier, but the air had turned chillier.
“Red?” The woman’s eyes grew wide. She assessed Sonia’s every movement.
Sonia shook her head, tears pricking at the corner of her eyes. “Do you know me?
The barking of a dog sounded closer, and the dark-haired woman drew back as the little body pushed past her.
Sonia leaned down. “What are you doing here?”
The little dog barked furiously, wagging its tail and whining. Its furry little face searched Sonia’s, and it jumped against Sonia’s leg, licking her hand.
“Hey there. Glad to see you made it home.” Sonia reached down at petted dog’s head.
Snorting, the dog rubbed its head against Sonia’s hand, letting out a delighted sound.
“Your dog knows me.” Sonia searched the dark-haired woman’s face. “I saved it. In the alley yesterday. There was a demon trying to take it.”
“Jellybean, what have you been doing?” Fae returned her gaze to Sonia and stared hard. “You saved her? How?”
A frustrated snort came from the dog, and she growled at the shadows.
“You’re lucky that you have a hellhound to watch over you. Someone must have loved you a lot.”
The woman’s face softened. “My mother. Jellybean was the last gift she gave me before she died.”
“Can you please let me in?” Sonia glanced behind her. The shadows grew longer, and the temperature continued to drop. The street was deserted now. “I need to see Fae. Monty sent me.” Sonia hated that her voice shook. She couldn’t help but notice the woman who blocked her path was intoxicating. The stranger’s dark hair rippled in the cold light of the shop, and her tight fitting shirt revealed far more than it chose to conceal. Her eyes burned black in the darkness, and despite her fear, Sonia felt herself falling inside them. They were safe. Familiar somehow. It didn’t make sense.
“Why the hell would Monty send you here?” The woman straightened, and the illusion of a simple shop owner vanished.
Jellybean barked. The dog’s body tensed, and she stood in front of Sonia, protecting her from the darkness beyond. The energy on the street grew malignant. The dog’s eyes flashed red and power radiated from her.
Sonia and the woman stared, momentarily speechless.
“Well, I’ll be damned. Come on.” The woman grinned as Jellybean jumped up and down. “Get in here.”
Dark laughter echoed down the street and Sonia flinched.
Jellybean growled, the hair on the back of her neck standing straight up.
Sighing deeply, the woman held the door open. “Come on then. Jellybean’s vouching for you and I’ve been looking for you myself.”
“Thank you.” Sonia scurried through the door, tears of relief brimming on her lashes. She blinked, but the tears still managed to fall. She was an immortal. Fear was not something she was used to living with, and it made her angry. Her head and soul were still spinning from everything that had happened in the past hour. She staggered. Her life was about to change even more. She could feel it.

Guest Diva: Lucy Felthouse

Please give a warm welcome to our guest this week, Lucy Felthouse, a fellow Brit and very talented author. Don't miss the giveaway at the end of the interview!
Cait

What is the Heat level of your books from 1 to YOWZA?
They vary from 1 to YOWZA! Hmm, okay maybe not 1. Perhaps 2 upwards? At the gentler end of the scale I have books such as Susie White and the Right Hand Man, which is a retelling of Snow White and the Huntsman, and Off the Shelf which is hot but pretty vanilla. At the other end of the scale you’ve got Stately Pleasures, Grand Slam and Testing Tom to name but three, which are BDSM romances with BDSM clubs, whips, public sex, threesomes and more. This is why my author strapline is “Erotic and Romantic Fiction… Whatever Your Fancy.”

What are you writing right now? Is it part of a series?
I’m currently working on a short story called A Taste of Amsterdam, which (providing it’s accepted) will be book four in my World of Sin series from Ellora’s Cave, which is about a couple of men who take a year off between college and university to travel the world and have lots of sexy fun! Books one, two and three are set in London, Paris and Rome, respectively.

Do you write full time?
I don’t, no. My day job is running my own business (http://www.writermarketing.co.uk), which is marketing for writers, doing websites, organizing blog tours and so on. Basically, I eat, sleep and breathe books in one way or another. I’m actually getting pretty antsy at the moment, as I have three book releases in June which I’m writing what feels like a bazillion guest blogs posts for… therefore I’m not getting to do much new writing. It’s very frustrating, but I know things will calm down soon and I’ll be able to get back to some new books and stories.

JUST A DECADENT TASTE…

Last book you read? A Minor Indiscretion by Carole Matthews

Cake or pie? Cake

Favorite vacation spot? Paris

Hairy chest or smooth? Depends on the man

Stand alone or series? Depends on the books

Novella or novel? Both, depends on the story

Real or pen name? Real

Vanilla or ANY another flavor? If we’re talking actual flavours here, then vanilla. If we’re talking preferences… then I’m not telling ;)

Tattoo or piercing? Both!

Once Upon A Time or The End? The end

Excerpt:

Nadia Gorlando and I had just gotten off the exercise bikes in the gym when one of the academy’s coaches, Peter Ross, headed over to us, all smiles.
“Hey, Nadia,” he said, his all-American grin widening and his blond hair flopping down over his forehead, “I need a huge favor.”
I flicked my gaze to Nadia. She raised one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows and waited for him to continue. He did.
“I totally lost track of time just now and I have an appointment with Travis Connolly. Would you mind wiping down my machine for me? Or maybe stick a note on it saying it’s out of order? I don’t want to leave it all sweaty for someone else. You’ll be doing me a real solid. I’ll owe you.”
My jaw almost hit the floor.
Now Nadia rolled her eyes, looked over at the offending machine, then back at Peter. “Sure, I understand,” she said, as cool as ice. “The world’s number one can’t wait. Go right ahead—I’ll fix it for you.”
He babbled a load of thanks, then jogged out of the gym.
I gaped at her. “You’re not going to do it, are you?”
Nadia chuckled. “Of course not. He may be coaching Travis Connolly and Rufus Lampani for the US Open, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to clean up his mess.” She pointed with her chin over to the machine Peter had just vacated. “Come on, V, I’ll show you how I’m going to deal with this.”
I followed her, grinning. Her tone told me that it was going to be something fun. Well, for us, anyway. Probably not for Peter.
Sure enough, when she returned from the room off the side of the gym, she had a pad of paper and a pen in her hands. Deliberately shielding the pad from my view, she wrote something down, then pulled off the top sheet. Folding it, she then propped it on the sweat-slicked seat so the writing was on view to anyone who happened past.
When I’d read and absorbed the words, I turned to Nadia, impressed. Her smile lit up her face, showing dimples in each cheek, and her brown eyes gleamed with amusement.
It was in that moment that I decided I had the serious hots for Nadia Gorlando.
The sign read,
PLEASE EXCUSE THE STATE OF THIS MACHINE. PETER ROSS, TENNIS COACH SUPREMO, “LOST TRACK OF TIME”.

What Happens After Happily Ever After?

As a romance author, one of the complaints I often get is that my books focus on the first stages of love. The beating heart, sweaty palms, and the gotta have sex all the time stage. But what happens to the romance after that stage is over? Where are the books that tell the story of the married couple who still has the heat and passion? Or the couple who are able to regain that heat and passion years after they have their happily ever after?

I’m very fortunate that my publisher does offer a line of books devoted to that stage of love as well. I haven’t written one—yet. But there are some amazing authors who have. One of which is our own diva Sabrina York! The line is the Branded line at Ellora’s Cave. And I’d like to write one someday soon. The general consensus is that it’s fantastic fall in love. Staying in love, however, is a whole other story. And it should be told. Having been married for seventeen years (this November) I tend to agree.

Don’t get me wrong, my husband and I faced our fair share of conflict when we announced we were getting married after a very short dating period. And how we handled that conflict really defined our relationship and set up a healthy pattern of conflict resolution for the future. But since then we’ve gone through unemployment, fertility issues, pregnancy issues, debt, a massive move, job changes, and my husband even worked two jobs while going through college. And that’s just the periods of stress I can name off the top of my head. If I were to think harder about, I’m sure I could remember more. But through it all, we fought to keep our relationship.

And I know we aren’t alone. Every married couple I know has faced their unique set of challenges. Some have had unexpected health issues, others have faced financial or employment stresses. And some have had to deal with broken trust. That they fight to reclaim their relationship is beautiful and should be celebrated in story as well.

So today I’m going to sit down and read Extreme Couponing because it looks fabulous.

Cerise DeLand presents: Knights in Black Leather, Book 3

BIND ME CLOSE by Cerise DeLand

The moment Willow arrives in Bravado, Wade sweeps her off her feet. He’s gruff, strong and shockingly appealing. Though Willow is in Bravado on business there’s nothing more appealing—or sexually exciting—than getting naked with Wade.

Wade’s had his fair share of women—in his bed and at the local BDSM club. A confident Dom, he doesn't get involved with the women he indulges with—until Willow catches his eye. An enticing blend of cautious inexperience and wild woman, Willow snares Wade so completely he’s only too happy to break his rules and get deeply, irrevocably involved.

Willow blossoms in Bravado and in Wade’s bed. But her desires, though long dormant, run deep and she craves a ménage—the only thing Wade can’t bring himself to give her. But if Wade wants to keep Willow—for now or forever—he’s going to have to find a way to ensure she gets exactly what she needs. One way or another.

READ AN EXCERPT!

Chapter One
Willow Turner did surprises very well. Birthday parties for her younger sister Skye, bachelorette bashes for her friends, even one graduation gig for her one long-term boyfriend. She liked occasional trips to the moon for herself, orchestrated by some caring soul or other who really knew how to tickle her funny bone. Most of the time, though, she lived a calm, steady existence as a high school history teacher and the biggest shocks to her system occurred when her electricity went out—along with her Internet access—during a raging Oklahoma tornado.
On the sweltering summer day when she pushed open the door to the parking lot of the tiny Texas convenience store, she saw the lot was empty and halted in her tracks. Blinked. Scanned the lot once more for her white Honda rental.
“No fooling,” she murmured to herself. “It’s gone.”
She fingered the ignition key in her hand and bit her lower lip.
How could the car just disappear?
Willow turned back inside the roadhouse and sought out the teenage clerk who had sold her a bottle of water and a bag of pretzels.
“Hellooo? Hello? Oh, wow. Where did you go?”
The kid was no longer behind the cash register and he wasn’t in the aisles, either. Taller than Abe Lincoln, he would have been noticeable even if he didn’t have a nose piercing and a wild head of purple dreds caught back in a pony tail.
“Hello?” She made her way past the trough of iced beer and sodas toward the back. “Are you there? I need help.”
Had he skipped?
“Well, damn.”
Hand on her hip, she spun to look out the plate-glass window onto the parking spaces in front of the store. Yep. She was right. Not hallucinating in the July heat. That car is gone, baby, gone.
Stolen? Had to be.
Whoever did this was fast and quiet. And all done while I was in the john taking a pee and putting on fresh lipstick. So much for trying to look good as I drive into Bravado and meet my long lost extended family.
The effort had gotten me stranded.
“Hey!”
She jumped. “Oh! You scared me.”
“Sorry, lady.” The young clerk grinned at her, his braces shiny and sinister as a cartoon robot. “Need something else?”
She pointed toward the empty lot. “Yeah. My car has been stolen.”
“Wha’?” The kid turned, slow as molasses, and took a gander outside. “You sure?”
“Well, I have no other explanation for it. Do you? I mean, cars just don’t disappear.”
“Right. But I didn’t see anyone take it. Did you?” he asked her.
“No, but—”
“Hot-wired it, probably.” He nodded, looking confident he had the explanation.
“Hmm.” Could be. She knew a bunch of eleventh-graders where she taught school grew great weed in a deserted factory outside of town. They supported their families on the profits. Why not a gang who stole cars for giggles and dollars? “Got a lot of that going on in Bravado?”
“Oh, no, ma’am. We got good things in Bravado.” He gave her a toothy metallic grin. “No crooks, ma’am.”
Oh, that fried it. Whenever anyone started doubling up on ‘ma’am” she knew it was because she looked imposing. Teaching teenagers had seeped into her bloodstream, giving her an aura older than her thirty-five years. Five-eleven and a solid size sixteen only supported the impression.
Still, she was dumbstruck over this theft.
“Dunno ‘bout this.” The kid scratched his head, looking a bit too bewildered to her eagle eye. She knew teenagers and this one appeared a little too fishy in his innocence. “What’d you see?”
“Nothing. Didn’t even hear the engine rev. That’s why I’m kind of crazy.” What happened when someone stole a rental car? Am I liable for the cost to replace it? Geez.
Ten or twenty thousand dollars would ruin her financially for years. Just when she had written the last tuition check to Skye for her senior year and thought she was in the black, this happened. She was scraping the bottom of her bank account now, having only enough to cover the rental fee to drive here to interview the MacRaes and the Turners. She had to make her remaining two thousand dollars stretch until her salary started again in September when the new school year began. Plus, she had the B&B to pay for here in Bravado. Would she run out of funds and have to leave town before she got all her research done for Francine Turner’s life story?
“Right. So…um.” The kid looked perplexed. Maybe even nervous. “You gonna call Sheriff Saxon?”
“Sure.” Saxon. A cousin of the Turners and the MacRaes? “The sheriff’s name is Saxon?”
“Yeah. Wade Saxon.” The kid’s left eye twitched. “You know him?”
Was he worried that she had an in with the law?
“No.”
“Well, you gonna call him?”
“Yes. I am.” I have to find this car. Avoid paying to replace it. Her old nemesis was lack of money. High school history teachers didn’t earn diddly. When this biography of an early Texas settler started earning royalties, she hoped she would finally be in the black. Willow Turner, financially secure, was her vision.
“Okay.” The boy scowled. “You got a cell? If not, ya know, I…ah…might, could let you use the phone in the back.”
“Cell.” Focus on what he’s talking about. “Right.”
“9-1-1,” he told her as if she were a numbskull. He gave her a perfunctory smile and pointed toward the back storeroom. “Got boxes to open. ‘Xcuse me, ma’am.”
Was he too eager to get away from her? Narrowing her gaze on his retreating figure, she tried to recall if he had been able to view the parking lot when she had been in the bathroom. Damn. Her mind was a sieve! Just what she needed. Disaster, right when she neared the mid-point of her story of the life of Francine Turner, Anglo farmer, wife to a Comanche chief and later, wife to a Bravado law man. She silently cursed at her rotten luck.
Fishing her cell from her purse, she hit the three keys and got connected in two rings. When she told the dispatcher what had happened, she was about to ask for a time estimate when a patrolman might arrive, but the sound of a siren blaring in her ears halted her. A big white two-door 4×4 emblazoned with “Bravado County Sheriff” in blue letters on the side zoomed into the drive.
“Thank you,” she told the woman, “he’s here.” Then she hung up.
From the cab, a huge man in a dark brown uniform, a white Stetson and sunglasses ran from the driver’s side, gun drawn.
Willow had just pushed open the door when he got to her, put a hand to her chest and pressed her back against the glass.
She stood, frozen, as he surveyed the store, stalking the end of each aisle, his revolver pointed straight out, ready to unload lead into anyone lurking there.
He spun toward her. Strode over. Put his face down to hers and through his dark lenses looked her over good and hard from her hair escaping its bun to her parted lips, past her t-shirt to her flip-flops. His examination seared her like a solar flare, raging and unavoidable. Plus he was large, very large. Taller than she. Filling her universe with nothing but giant Texas lawman. “I asked, are you okay, miss?”
Miss.
His voice was thick and warm as molten Macadam.
She was a sucker for big men. Kind men. Only a few fit that double bill. A smile curved the corners of her lips. “I am.”
“Good. Jared?” he bellowed and she flinched at his roar. “Where are you, kid?”
The clerk appeared in the doorway to the storeroom, pale eyes darting from the big man to her. “Here, Sheriff!”
So this really was Sheriff Saxon? Not a mirage of a mountain man. Not an X-rated wish. Wow. Grill me for dinner and serve me up.
“Did you see them?”
“Who?” Jared asked, bug-eyed, as he wiped his hands on a cloth and walked down the chips aisle.
Willow couldn’t believe the kid could be so stupid. Or such a bad actor.
“The red sedan. You had to have seen them.”
“No, sir. I—”
Hunky Lawman spun to Willow. “Were you here?”
She shook her head but concluded that the red sedan and her missing car might be linked. “I—”
“Did you see them or not, miss?”
Impatient cuss. “I didn’t see anyone, no, Sheriff. But—”
He re-holstered his gun and frowned, gazing in the direction of the parking lot. “Where is your car, ma’am?”
Ma’am. Hmm.
“That’s what I was about to tell you, if you give me a chance.”
“Well, hurry up, I’ve got plowing to do and you are keeping me.”
She would have given him her quelling look she saved for unruly ninth graders, but she wanted her car back as much as she wanted to end this conversation. Pushy guys—even if they were sheriffs—were not on her hit parade.
“Someone stole my car. Maybe it was your—”
“What?” he asked her, but then he cocked his ear to his two-way radio that was strapped to the epaulet of his left shoulder. “Say that again, Maureen.”
Static sliced the air for a long minute.
“You, ma’am,” the sheriff said as he pointed at Willow. “Tell me what happened here.”
“I said my car was stolen. Maybe by your red sedan.”
He jammed both hands on his hips and tipped his head to one side. “Now you realize that makes absolutely no sense.”
“Sure. But—”
He scowled at her. “What’s your name?”
“Willow Turner.”
“Willow Turner,” he repeated her name like he was in a trance. “Well, I’ll be damned.”
“Sheriff?” a voice on his two-way squawked at him. “Chet Harris spies them on Johns Road, headed for Bandera.”
“Okay, Mo. Ask him if he sees another car behind them.” He looked at Willow and wiggled his fingers so that she knew she was supposed to cough up info for him. “Tell me the make and color of your car, honey.”
Honey.
She narrowed her eyes at him. Okay, so it was good old Texas boy rhetoric to call a gal sweet things, but didn’t this circumstance demand some distance? In her old hometown of Boston, he’d never dare cozy up to her with such cutesy names. She should cool his jets, even if the looks of him had her revved for wine and roses. “Honda. White. Two door. Coup.”
“License number?” he demanded.
“I don’t know that.”
He lowered his head and beamed at her over the tops of his sunglasses and oh, boy. She could have gone for a skinny dip in the aquamarine depths of his eyes.
“Okay, no plate number,” he told his erstwhile dispatcher, Mo. But he focused on Willow. Hard. “We do know what state though, don’t we?”
Willow had the urge to give him the finger. “Oklahoma.”
He repeated that for his girl. “Where are they now?”
The static cut in and out. But somehow Saxon understood it all.
“All right. I’m headed to Bandera out Route forty-six.” He grabbed Willow by the elbow and jutted his chin toward his truck.
“I’ve got Miz Willow Turner with me. That white Honda is hers. You put me on their asses, Mo. Tell Gil to press ‘em hard. He and I will squeeze them up before they hit town. My guess is they thought they’d try to split up to confuse us. Too bad they found a car with keys in the ignition.”
Taking that for an insult, Willow snorted in indignation and dangled her keys before his eyes.
“Forget that, Mo. They wired the damn thing.” He grabbed her wrist to guide her outside toward the cab of his truck. The man was a brute, his hold on her cutting off her circulation.. She dug in her heels but he jerked her forward against the wall of his chest.
A hand to the wall of his pecs, Willow righted herself. Warm steel felt precisely like his chest. Deep in her tummy, desire stirred and stretched like a drowsy cat. In her throat, she purred.
He blinked, frowning at her. “Come on, Miz Turner. You and I are going to go claim your car.”
Retrieving her rental worked just as well for her as getting to ride with him. No, she hadn’t ever been in a police cruiser. New adventures were not what most men invited her to share with them. More often than not, she served as best pal to her friends. She was Old Reliable with a sturdy shoulder to cry on. She smiled to herself at this change, trotting along, her wrist still tight in his grip. “Cool.”
“You bet.” Outside in the brilliant sun, he led her to the passenger door and opened it for her.
A gentleman, he was too. Most Texan men were, if she gauged them all by the two teachers she was friends with back in Lawton, Oklahoma. Of course, they were also blessed by an overload of testosterone that made them ornery.
“Hop in.” Glaring at her, he nodded to the dim interior of his cab. “I may paddle your behind, lady, if you do not get in this truck now. You want your car back or not?”
She mashed her lips together and climbed in. The air-conditioning thrilled her perspiring body. He had left the engine—and the A/C running, bless his law-enforcing soul.
When he came around and slid in, he shoved the shift into gear and took off like a bat out of hell.
She struggled to snap her seat belt. “God, do all you types drive like the devil is after you?”
“Ride with a lot of cops, do you?”
“I watch TV.”
“You need real life experience.”
“Yeah. Like how much is enough?” She fretted as he sped along the narrow road.
He took a look at her bare legs, then pushed his sunglasses up the long straight bridge of his nose. “What year is your car?”
“This year.”
“New, huh?”
“And rented.”
“That explains why you don’t know the license plate number.”
“I am not a total moron.”
He mashed his very handsome lips together and snorted. “Testy, aren’t you?”
“I give what I get.” She folded her arms. He might be a real dish but that did not mean he could be a prick and insult her.
She saw his eyes slide to one side. His gaze lingered on her thighs and she could have sworn in the fire, her skin burned right off.
He cleared his throat and squinted at the road. “You didn’t see them get in the car?”
“Sad to say, no. I went to the ladies room, took a while, bought my water and pretzels and never looked outside. I mean, who steals a Honda in broad daylight on a country road?”
“They robbed a jewelry store in Boerne.”
“Well, they robbed me too.” She pouted. “They’ve got my laptop. My clothes. Good thing I put my flash drive with all my research and draft of the book in my purse.”
“Don’t worry.” He squeezed her hand so hard that she marveled he hadn’t crushed her bones. “We’ll get ‘em.”
As he skidded around a curve at an alarming speed, Willow shut one eye and braced herself, slapping a hand to the dash. Still, the seat was cool, slick leather and she slid against him, thigh to thigh.
“Hold tight.”
Another middle finger exclamation seemed like a really bad idea, especially since he had sympathized with her losses.
As they whizzed along the country road, she mused, “You must go through a lot of tires in a year.”
He snorted and hit the gas pedal. “Every six months, I order a new set.”
“And do you always get your man?”
“Always.”
“Good.” She relaxed into her seat as she saw they were now sailing on a straightaway. But one look at his speedometer told her that he could hit ninety soon and she swallowed her screech of fear. The car would only plane. Geez, something to write about, if she ever tried to pen a cops and robbers shoot ‘em up.
“I hear you’ve come to Bravado to do research on your great grandfather.”
“I have,” she said, her heart in her throat as they passed a slowpoke doing seventy or so.
“The MacRaes and Turners are really eager to meet you.”
“Same goes.”
“Case Turner and the three MacRae men always wanted to know what happened to Blade. The whole family did in fact.”
“My great grandfather had left Bravado as a young man and from what we know he never returned here. I want to know why.” She smiled at him and when he glanced at her only for a second, she could have sworn he focused only on her lips. Before she could enjoy it for the caress it was, he looked away, then whizzed past two other cars.
He squinted at the road. “For that, you need to learn what happened to his mother.”
“I do.” She saw a truck approaching in the other lane and prayed the sheriff got over to his own side pronto.
“Fancy Turner left the Comanche tribe about a year after the chief Bull Elk captured her.”
“I want to know how she managed that.”
“We have the facts. Loosen up, there, kiddo. Your fingers will fall off if you clutch the seat any tighter.”
“Yeah, well, lemme just say I don’t trust your driving.” She scrunched her whole face up at the car barreling toward them as it attempted to pass another truck. “Blowing that horn doesn’t help.”
“He needs to get out of my way. Relax. I’m good at my job.”
“It’s not your job that takes my breath away.” Truer words had never left her lips.

If you had a choice, what would you like to see in a Paranormal Romance?

Sitting down in front of the keyboard, I thought about what I wanted to cover today. Looking at the stack of notes to my side, I knew then and there what I was going to blog about today - Supernaturals.

You may ask why Supernaturals? The answer is simple; I am currently working on, what will be, my debut Paranormal Romance Novel. It's only natural that my mind is filled with all things supernatural, as I plan, plot and devise a story filled with the amazing, mysterious creatures.

I have always had a love of vampires and actually, my first reads were filled with the fanged wonders. However, as my reading expanded, so too did my interests, as I came to love and be fascinated with shifters of all species.

One of my favorite is the wolf. Unfortunately, the market seems to be saturated with the all-time favorite wolf - and I can certainly see why - who wouldn't love a male, all alpha, who has the ability to call on his wolf and the strength of his pack backing him? But even with my love for the wolves, as I sat down to devise my story, I decided that I wanted to go bigger...badder.

Enter the dragon.

Fire-breathing, mysterious, stronger than any known creature with a forty-foot wing span and, some believe, based on what actually roamed the earth during prehistoric times. Can you imagine? You're out, walking along and suddenly you hear the tell-tale "whop-whop," caused by the creature's massive wings, as he beats them up and down, majestically soaring overhead?

Absolutely amazing...and so a story was born.

Of course, fascinated with all supernatural creatures, I couldn't be happy with only a dragon. Nope. I wanted to add more spice to the story and,  having plans to expand into a series, what better way than to have other supernaturals? There are so many yummy ones to choose from...

Naturally, there is a down side to this thinking, which I didn't consider at the time I hatched my oh-so-brilliant plan; my head is now filled (and I mean FILLED) with each supe, rattling around, banging against my skull, sometimes very loudly, wanting their own story told. Whoops. =)

That brings me to the thinking behind this post - what do you, the reader, want to read? If I were to use you as my personal muse, what creature's story would you have me tell? Why?

Do you want to see more of the lovely, sly, slinky cats? Or could it be that you are dying to see more of the hulking, fuzzy, adorable but aggressive bears? Maybe you want more angels, demons or fey creatures? Or, possibly you really want to reach for the stars and you'd love to see some kind of usual shifter, rarely seen in the literary world?

So, the question I have for you, the reader, is what is the one Supernatural you long to read about? If you had your choice of any creature, be they vampire, fey, shifter, witch, ogre, etc. who would you like to read about and why? When you walk into the bookstore, or search the e-libraries, what are you desperately hoping to find?

As I work through this first novel, featuring a seriously kick-ass, sexy, alpha dragon, I too bring in his family, acquaintances and friends.

This is where you come in...

How you ask?
