Reader Seeking Perfect Book

With all the books out there, sometimes buying a new book is a lot like going on a first date, especially if the author is new to me. It doesn't help that I read everything from Amish to erotica, paranormal to contemporary, Sci-Fi to historical, and-of course-my first book love, fantasy. Yep, I read and have loved them all. So what is it I'm looking for?

Likable characters: Likable is the key word for this one. I don't have to love the characters. Heck, I've written some heroes and heroines I don't love. But I do have to like them. I realize they are going on a journey and will change (hopefully for the better) by the end of the book, but from the moment I open the book, I have to like them. I do occasionally make exceptions. I just read a book the other day where I wasn't crazy about the hero. Thankfully the writing was strong enough for me to look past my reservations where he was concerned.

Consistency: I don't care what type of world a story takes place in or what time frame a story is written in but it has to stay consistent. It can be hard for me to read. I've made no secret to the fact that I'm dyslexic. Anything that pulls me out of the story makes it that much harder for me to actually get into the story.

Chemistry: Not just between the hero and heroine, although that is very nice. I love reading how the characters react to the world around them. I tend to be a passionate person. I know, big surprise. When I care about something or someone, I care deeply. My husband and kids are, of course, at the top of my list but that list of things I'm passionate about is surprisingly long. I like reading characters who care as deeply about the world they live in as I do. It helps the characters feel real to me.

Happily Ever After: Yes I get the value of sad books. I've read tons of them. I've wept openly in public over them. I've even read several of them to my kids over the year because I know they have an important role in shaping minds. But if I'm reading for pleasure, I'll take a happy book any day of the week. It doesn't have to be happy all the way through, mind you. But I do like the contented feeling I'm left with after a good romance.

What about you? What do you look for in a book? Are there somethings that are more important to you than others?

Audiobook giveaway from Lia Davis

I love audiobooks. I started listening to them when I worked outside the home. I had an hour commute to and from work and listening to a book took the stress of drive in rush-hour traffic away. I also listened while working and now listen while traveling or cleaning or just relaxing, which I don't get to do very often.

I have several books available in audiobook with more to come. To listen to the samples Click Here.

TWO lucky commenters will be selected at random to win a free audiobook. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me if you could chose a fictional character to read to you, who would it be and why? Have fun and luck!

10 things readers may not know about Lia Davis

Hi all! Today I'm sharing ten things you may not know about me. I want to encourage you to share something back in the comments.

1. I have a twisted sense of humor. It works hand in with number 2. Those who don’t know me are sometimes put off by it.

2. I’m quirky and sarcastic. Aka Smart Ass. This only comes out with friends who like my twisted sense of humor.

3. I’m shy. No, really. When I meet people for the first time I can become quiet and some think I’m a snob. I’m not, it just takes me a while to warm up. The best way to break the ice is to just start talking to me.

4. I’m easily distracted. It is one reason I can’t work with a hard deadline or schedule.

5. I don’t like wearing shoes in the house. The first thing I do when getting home and take off the shoes.

6. I wear socks to bed all year around.

7. I was a tomboy growing up. I still prefer the company of guys most the time, even though I have girlfriends I love hanging out with.

8. Besides reading and writing, music is my outlet and escape. I will listen to music and read at the same time. Yes, it is possible.

9. I had my son at 20 and my daughter 14 months later.

10. I hate public speaking. It scares the ever loving crap out of me.

Happy Halloween!

Every year, Halloween kind of takes me by surprise. I'm not sure why. I know it's there. It's not like Easter. It doesn't move around on the calendar. But, still, it kind of comes out of nowhere. This year is no exception. Would you think I'm the world's worst mother if I tell you we don't have costumes for our kids yet? We don't. We're going to go get them tonight, however. I know, I know, that's really waiting for the last minute.

This comes as even more of a surprise to me because of how much I love Halloween. It's the one holiday that's all about candy, dressing up, and having fun. I can't think of another holiday that's more of a party than Halloween. Thanksgiving is all about food. Christmas is all about gifts (even in the religious terms, Jesus was a gift to us). Easter is all about family and redemption. They're all fun, but none are actually built around having fun.

So, this year for Halloween, I've decided I'm going to go all out for fun. Kind of my way of saying sorry to the holiday for pushing it off to the last minute. I'm going to go to my friend's house for pizza, take the kiddos trick or treating, and then (when everybody's gone off to sleep) I'm going to stay up and read an erotic horror! Because really, does it get any more fun than sexy-scary? There are a ton of them out there to pick from as well. I went to the Ellora Cave's Shivers page and found one that looks good....

Here's the blurb that sold me:

“He who makes wishes of the damned must accept the consequences of releasing them.”
Returning home from the Great War, Graham longs for something he fears he no longer deserves—Anna, the love he left behind three years ago. When a mysterious old woman begs him to retrieve a trinket, then disappears, Graham is compelled to rub the tinderbox and make a wish. He wishes to have Anna by his side…and she suddenly appears! They want the night to explore and pleasure each other.

But the tinderbox’s black magic is powerful and brings a price—a horde of walking corpses that will stop at nothing to sate their craving for flesh.
Additional wishes can’t drive the ravenous dead back into their graves. They only succeed in raising an army of zombies that will destroy everyone in their path—starting with Graham and Anna.

A Romantica® paranormal erotic horror romance from Ellora’s Cave
