Movies About Writers

Even before I was a writer I loved movies about writers and other creative people. I find it fascinating to see how their lives affect their work.

Here are some of my favorite movies about famous writers.

J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most famous fantasy writers of all time. His Lord of the Rings series is a favorite of readers and moviegoers alike. Tolkien, in theatres now, follows the author through his hardships as an orphan, to his time in school—where he forms lasting friendships that change his life. It also gives us a glimpse into how his time spent fighting in World War 1 had a heavy influence on his work.

Becoming Jane is a wonderful film that stars Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen. A wonderful look at the struggles she had on her journey to being one of the most loved authors of all times.

Miss Potter is a whimsical and wonderful film that depicts the life of the beloved children’s writer Beatrix Potter. Renee Zellweger plays the lead role. Miss Potter was an eccentric young woman who defied convention and channeled her passion for nature to create books that have endured.

Do you have any favorite films about real (or fictional) writers?

And if you’re looking for a book to read, maybe you’ll check out the first book in my new sci-fi romance series. If you love sexy space mercenaries, you’ll love the Marks family.

Rescuing Rory
Marks Mercenaries, Book 1

Betrayed and sold into slavery after her father’s death, Rory Banks finds herself dancing on the Exos, a deep-space pleasure ship. So when a stranger breaks open her cage and offers her a way out, she grabs it and runs.

Kal Marks and his brothers are space mercenaries and traders who have spent the past ten years searching for their younger sister. Their hunt has led them to the Exos and to Rory, who they hope will have information. But Kal never counted on wanting Rory or on the sexual tension and scorching heat that blazes between them. This mission just got a lot more complicated.

Interview with Guest Diva Robyn Bachar

What is the Heat level of your books from 1 to YOWZA?

The Cy’ren Rising books might be YOWZA, because they’re in Samhain’s Red Hots!!! category. (Three exclamation points serious, people.)  They’re ménages, and the first two have m/f/f/ romances and the final book in the trilogy is m/m/f. Pretty spicy. ;)

Why did you start writing?

Because the voices in my head won’t let me sleep if I don’t let them out to frolic on the page. I’ve always been a writer—I started my first novel in 8th grade. I don’t understand how people don’t write. There’s always at least one story brewing in my brain.

Biggest (non-writing) influence in your life?

My parents are both former gym teachers. (If you’ve ever wondered what happens when gym teachers breed, you either get a star athlete like my brother or a total book nerd like me.) They instilled a “you can do it!” drive in me, which has motivated me to attempt scary things like submitting to agents and publishers. Because yeah, you might get rejected, but you can’t win the game if you don’t play.

What has been your biggest writing influence - book or another author?

Nora Roberts. I want to be Nora Roberts when I grow up. ;) Though really I’m inspired by the other writers I’ve met, like the lovely Chandra Ryan who invited me to blog here today. Every writer has a story about what inspires them, and I find them all fascinating.

What are you writing right now? Is it part of a series?

I’m working on a super-secret project with my best friend Diana, which is a stand-alone novel. For NaNoWriMo I’m going to start the first book in a new sci-fi romance trilogy.

Do you write full time?

I do, though I’m looking for a day job. I love writing, but it’s good to get out of the house too. Plus the puppy has a bed behind my desk, and every time I start to write she bites my ankles.

A writing goal you haven’t shared with anyone?

I want to write a book that becomes a summer blockbuster movie. The kind with a dashing, swoon-worthy hero and a kickbutt heroine and lots of explosions.

Any hobbies non-writing related (stalking male cover models on Facebook doesn’t count)?

Gaming. I don’t do online gaming like I used to, but I enjoy Dragon Age and Mass Effect on my Xbox. I’m soooo looking forward to the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition.

JUST A DECADENT TASTE….
·
Last book you read?  Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach. It is SO GOOD. It has all of my catnip, and     I already picked up the second and third book.
·
      Cake or pie?  Cake, please.
·
Stand alone or series?  Yes. Both.
·
Novella or novel?  Ooh, tough one. Sometimes you need a quick read and a novella is perfect.
·
Real or pen name?  Like Tiffany Reisz, I write under my real name.
·
Vanilla or ANY another flavor?  Chocolate peanut-butter.
·
Tattoo or piercing?  I have 4 tattoos, so I’m going to have to go with tattoo.

Look Into My Crystal Ball

If someone could tell you your future, would you want to hear? Would you want to know who you were going to fall in love with? How many children you were going to have? How he was going to break your heart but then put it all back together again? When and how you’d die?

What if you didn’t have a choice? What if you saw the future? What if you could feel when you were on the right path? And knew when you were on a path were very bad things happened?

That’s Rowe's position in Covert Desires. She doesn’t really have much of a choice. She’s a Sub Type Six. She was made to see the future. When she was government property, she was hooked up to machines that would see and record the prophecies. Now that she’s a citizen, however, she has to find her own way. Sometimes it’s easy. She just lets life guide her down the paths that feel right to her. But other times she has to improvise. Like when she and Jack are captured during an undercover investigation.

Excerpt:

“See, if she was a prophet, you would’ve known you was talking to the boss earlier. And you most certainly would’ve seen this coming.” He nodded and the man behind Jack brought the butt of his weapon into the back of Jack’s head. He collapsed like a rag doll under the force of the hit and he didn’t move again.
Her heart stopped and her breath caught in her lungs as the world blurred around her. Her body no longer hurt and she couldn’t feel the tight grasp Thomas had on her hair. She was completely focused on Jack. When his chest rose with a breath, her heart began to beat again.
“You’re wrong. I am a prophet.”
Thomas laughed loudly. “And I’m the prime minister.” He stopped laughing and pulled her tightly to him. “You’re with Special Investigations. I know a rat when I see one. I’m not an idiot, bitch.”
But he was. He’d proven his folly in her past. Or in his future. She shook her head as she tried to straighten out the timeline. In the end it didn’t make any difference. Whichever it was, he failed. There was an escape here. Some path that got her and Jack out of here and led to Thomas’ downfall. She only had to find it. Now was the time to test her theory. She had to try to focus on that one path and forget the others.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The fuzzy image of a nail flashed through her mind. It poked out of the wall as nothing more than a glint of metal in an otherwise dark room. Such a small thing. It was so insignificant her captors probably didn’t even realize it was there. But that one tiny glimmer of metal would save them both. She just had to find the track that would put her next to it.
She opened her eyes and shoved against Thomas as she brought one of her heels down on his foot. She didn’t weigh much but she hoped the element of surprise would work in her favor. Since she’d done little to fight back up to this point, Thomas had no reason to anticipate it now.
He cursed as her heel made contact and then stumbled as she continued to push as hard as she could against him. Her hands were still trapped behind her back but her shoulder provided a large enough surface for her to have an impact. Soon she was free of his grasp. Spinning, she ran for the nail.
A sharp pain erupted at the base of her skull and stopped her from reaching it, however. Her knees gave out from under her and her cheek hit the cold concrete floor. The air rushed out of her lungs and for one second she forgot how to breathe.
***
So, would you want to know how your story was going to end before it even began? To see a glimmer of hope only to have it pulled away at the last second?
I don’t think I’d like it. But, as Rowe states, she’s a Sub Type Six. This is what she was created to do. And she’s the best at it.
Covert Desires Blurb:
Universal Defiance, Book Six

Rowe is a Sub Type Five—a prophet—so her future should be laid out in front of her, clear as the stars in the night sky. But since Type Fives can’t remember their visions once they wake, the only thing she’s certain of is her overwhelming attraction to her partner, Jack. And that the desire seems one-sided. Jack does everything he can to put space between them.
After working undercover together to bring down a militia group, she discovers she got that one wrong though. Some hot encounters reveal that Jack wants her as much as she wants him. But they’ll have to survive the final mission and discover the identity of its mastermind before she finds out what their future holds.

Covert Desires' Cover and Release Date

I'm so excited! Covert Desires has a cover and a release date! When I first started this series, the last book seemed so far off. I thought it'd be forever before I was talking about it. But the time really flew by in a blur of words and alien sub-plots. And now we're here. Covert Desires releases this Friday! June 20th. I just can't even believe it.

Rowe has been one of my favorite characters from day one. Even before I knew what role she played in the universe, I knew she had an important one. She's not the typical heroine I write. She doesn't burst into rooms, make her presence known, and start shouting out commands. But she shows her strength in other ways. She's a wonderful combination of innocence and experience. She's lived through the worst of what humankind can dish out yet is still an optimist at heart. She honestly believes everything will work out. Which can be difficult because, as a prophet, she's seen every future possible but she can't remember any of them.

I've always loved the dual nature of her personality and I think the cover artist did a fantastic job capturing it.

Jack, on the other hand, is a pretty straight forward kind of guy. He's an agent. His job is to catch the bad guys and protect the civilians. And he's never really felt right about Rowe signing on with his agency. She's too soft, too innocent, for the kind of work they have to do. So when she becomes his partner, he has a hard time thinking of her as his equal. But when she saves his life, he starts to see that her belief in humankind and her quiet faith in the universe as the strength that it is.

That's why I love that he's standing behind her, yet his attention is focused on her.

This cover really captures so much of the emotion and the relationship of the two characters. I hope you give them a shot and read their story this Friday. If you want to read an excerpt, Ellora's Cave has one on their site. You just have to click on the hour glass icon in the upper right hand corner of the 'coming soon' cover on their page and it's one of the options. And please keep coming back. There will be an official blurb very soon.

An Interview with Guest Diva A. M. Griffin

Please help me welcome the lovely A. M. Griffin as she dishes about herself and her writing.

What is the Heat level of your books from 1 to YOWZA?

Let’s see, I have some FMF action and my characters love to get busy, so I would say YOWZA.

Why did you start writing?

My mother is writer. She doesn’t have any books published but she has a ton of them. She writes for fun and spends all of her free time doing it. I’ve grown up watching her sitting at her type writer and it seemed only natural for me to go on to express myself through writing as well. She’s my inspiration.

What are you writing right now? Is it part of a series?

I’m in the middle of a YA series right now. I know, how can I go from YOWZA to YA? Easily. I love these characters, but they keep wanting to have sex. LOL. I have to keep toning them down, it’s getting harder and harder. Now that’s a true feat right there. An erotic writer trying not to write about sex. I should get an award.

Do you write full time?

Right now, no. That’s my goal, to in a couple of years be able to go to writing full time. I’d love to be able to travel or just hang around at home and be on “the clock”. One day though, I just have to stay up until the wee hours of the night to make my dream come true.

JUST A DECADENT TASTE….

·       Last book you read?  Burning Dawn by Gena Showalter (love it)
·       Cake or pie? Cake. Chocolate please.
·       Favorite vacation spot? Jamaica
·       Hairy chest or smooth? I like a little taco meat
·       Stand alone or series? Series. I like to see how the characters are doing after their happily ever after
·       Novella or novel? Novel
·       Real or pen name? Real name.
·       Vanilla or ANY another flavor? ANY other flavor
·       Tattoo or piercing? Tattoo
·       Once Upon A Time or The End? LOL Both

Want a taste of A. M. Griffin's writing? You're in luck! I have the blurb to the newest book in the Loving Dangerously series.

   Dangerously His:

Loving Dangerously, Book Four

Justin “JB” Blake has never met a woman he couldn’t bed—or one he wants to keep. That changes the second he lays eyes on Princess Saia Xochis. The beautiful alien makes his body burn and his heart ache. She will be his. All JB has to do is risk life and limb at the hands of her abusive father, her protective brother, and her warmongering intended mate.

The possibilities of death and dismemberment have never stopped him before.

Inside Scoop: This book has a small taste of female/female fun—as well as scenes of abuse that are decidedly not fun.
